Things did not go as well as we hoped! Let us start with that. And, to everyone who has invested valuable time with us we wanted to first thank you and provide you information on what happened here, as well as assure you that we are reviewing all comments, listening, and planning for change in Season 3.
We have received a lot of comments about the table design. After sky base we started to really push more narrative and this blinded us to a few issues when it came to terrain set up. We prioritized the aesthetic over the function.
For Championship in particular all the tables were designed prior to playing any Championship games. So, the show producer was not aware of who would reach the final. Could we and should we have made adjustments once we knew what armies were playing. Absolutely yes! But, what is done is done and this is what we can do moving forward.
After this game the team set out to change things. Prior to this episode releasing we have elected a member of our team to have the responsibility of managing tables and terrain with a goal to have them hit our cinematic standards while also being great for gameplay.
We aim for tables and terrain to be vastly improved for Season 3.
In terms of lists. The parameter was fun and what we had access to over balance, as we prioritize sportsmanship and genuinely just enjoying the game. In single matches we can control balance more but in a Championship we don't know what the match ups will be. Nick for instance really wanted to play Kroot and had plans for how that would work but never got a practice game in. Tak played a variant of what he had played earlier in the season because that is all the Ad Mech he had, and, the Ad Mech were part of the story. Neither player played practice games, an issue with COVID-19 restrictions. However, our goal is to create super entertaining content and if that means we just have to play more, we will play more.
We had an aggressive goal of 7 releases in December. That left little time in our schedule to adjust on the go, or fix something we knew didn't quite hit the mark. We needed an end to Championship and here it is. If anything it is an opportunity to learn, to listen to you, and to grow.
We do not modify the outcome of dice rolls and situations to favour storytelling. All that is done in pre-planning and once the dice starts to roll it is the game as-is that you eventually see. This can lead to affairs like this one. But, we can always pre-plan better, set-up the tables better in the hopes of the game being better for it.
We thank you for watching Season 2, and hopefully being a fan of the majority of what we do. For those that were felt wanting after this episode we apologize and ask for your understanding.
From all of us here at Play On, Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing you in 2021.

Though there were some balancing issues this season you guys still did a great job! I think I speak for everyone when I say despite the results of this season it was still very entertaining and these are without a doubt the best batreps on youtube.

I love the whole series, and must admit I primarily watch for the aesthetic and sportsmanship! (it's just a great reminder of how I want to enjoy 40k). You guys have beautifully designed tables (and really stellar editing on the videos). The new stuff you have in mind sounds like a really well thought out set of modifications, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this video (despite any perceived mishaps!).
Steve is also my 40k role model (a guy who just seems to really enjoy the process of playing 40k), though everyone on the channel is lovely. Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate you putting these out, and think you are a very positive influence on the hobby!

Geez, i'm pretty sure you hoped in a more balanced final match, but sometime things don't go as planned. I am used to organize apocalypse games (with 40k rules, not the apocalypse ones), but back in the days for my first game i used a GW scenario to avoid problems... it was totally unbalanced and we realized it while playing. So i don't blame you, the passion you put into this championship was evident. I also really like the short format, frankly i cannot stand 2 hrs batreps.

Knowing that he was facing a brutally effective shooting army, Steve should have comitted everything on turn 1, put nothing in reserves, and deployed as close to the enemy as he could. I think putting the Eradicators in reserve is pretty good, as it guarantees them one turn of shooting (don't forget the two tanks that can hit targets out of line of sight, they would have for sure killed the Eradicators maybe even in one turn, and because the turn 1 charge with the Assault Interecessors was pretty likely with the doctrine, i liked the reserve play. The footslogging Assault Intercessors would just not connect if not in reserve, and they would die or be useless like the Terminators when their ride got shot.

Sure, he'd have lost a lot, but considering turn one he'd lost a lot anyway, this way he may hav egot more charges off, and in close quarters he'd have done well. Odd strategy to use, but may have worked.

As good as the table looked the open killing field in the centre of the board (where the objectives were) gave the shooting Ad Mech such a massive advantage over the assault Black Templars. I can't take anything away from the players but as an advert for 40k this just made me think if you go first you win which was the reason I didn't play more than a handful of games in 8th after being a regular player since Rogue Trader. I really enjoy 40K in 40M usually, but I have zero interest in watching 30 minutes of Steve's marines being slaughtered by Tak.
Kinda disappointing that Tak knew what was going to happen, too. When moving around the objectives he says "I'm just trying to create a big firing lane here that includes all these objectives." Which he does. And then obviously kills everything in it. Watching Nick get slaughtered by Steve was better.

This is the second video I've seen recently of the dakkabots just utterly annihilating the entire enemy army in 1-2 turns, and both times the opposing army was one of the higher tier space marine factions (the other video was against Dark Angels). Since the dakkabots can shoot into their own combat even if they get tied down by an enemy unit getting them into melee range, the dakkabots can just shoot that unit off the board next turn and then the turn afterwards resume their massacre of the rest of the enemy army.
It really seems like you guys need more terrain in the middle of the maps in these games. All the terrain was basically along the outer ring of the board and, while it looks pretty, with an army like Admech and their dakkabots it was a shooting gallery with little to no line of sight blocking terrain. That stratagem that makes them unable to move to give them additional shots has no drawback if the middle of the board is an open shooting gallery
While the game was kind of underwhelming with it practically being decided the instant Tac got to go first, well done to Steve for being such a good sport about the loss and for Tac not rubbing it in or being a poor winner

No disrespect intended, everyone at PlayOn is great and the channel rocks, but I have to say this one was a complete miss for me.
It was such a stomp. Oh my god. Tak sounded *uncomfortable* on turn 2 with how badly he was crushing Steve, and rightly so. The whole thing turned sour pretty fast. JT did his best to salvage it with the voiceover, but it came across as pretty forced.
I don't know what the production schedule is like, so I can't say for sure, but I would have seriously considered scrapping this one and filming another game, maybe with more obscuring terrain in the middle of the board. Even at the bottom of turn 2 you probably could have called it and reset.
Also, Tak's list was obviously of a much higher tier than any of the other ones, so it was clear from the start that he would win. I love both casual and competitive gaming, but it's no fun to watch a competitive list stomp on casual lists. It being a skew list gunline doesn't help either. At least armies like Harlequins or Custodes are dynamic and positional as they blend you into chunks on turn 2.
Just my opinion, but unless you're going for a strictly competitive, "no-holds-bared" setup where it's understood from the beginning that players will be going as hard as possible, I'd try pretty hard to ensure we end up with an at least somewhat balanced game that isn't over on turns 1 or 2. Sorry for writing a novel, lol.

Honestly, this is the type of feedback we need to hear. It is clear that you are being very observant and thoughtful about what you have written. It means you care about our mission to make entertaining content and for that we are very grateful. No platitudes. No beating around the bush. This show indeed had issues.
While we cannot change the past we can work on the future. For Season 3 we will have someone solely responsible for the tables and terrain who will work alongside the Director for cinematic battles that are also game balanced (as best as possible). Due to not having much time to play in 2020 we didn't practice any lists prior to Championship and had to play what we had. Tycho played with some of Tak's Death Guard. Tak played mostly the list he had from an earlier report because that is what he had. It really means we need more access here at Play On and hopefully working with the community and partners we can grow our collections to give us better choice. We are friends and friends don't like to stomp other friends.
Ultimately, we are learning a lot from our experiences from this Championship series and are already taking that learning to Season 3. Thank you for your observations.

@@PlayOnTabletop Hello! I agree with High Dragon somewhat about the lists being comparable. I really enjoy the casual games (Nick vs Tycho was great) but maybe you guys could do Hardcore vs Hardcore and Casual vs Casual? It's cool to see both ends of the spectrum though. I disagree with High Dragon about scraping games and re-filming them though. The authenticity makes it similar to a sporting event for me and there have been plenty of SuperBowls that are over before the half (which does suck) but they're still authentic.

    • @thepants
      @thepants Před 3 lety

Going first often is an advantage, but generally not for the reasons you saw in this video, and therefore not to such an extent. If you're playing with an appropriate amount of obscuring terrain, both players will be able to hide their armies well enough that the player who goes first will actually get to do fairly little shooting, as they won't be able to get line of sight on much of the opponent's army. For an in-depth view of why going first is an advantage, see www.goonhammer.com/the-november-2020-40k-meta-review/, but it basically boils down to (a) the first player can force the second player's hand in some ways and (b) while both players have five turns to score points, the first player also has five turns to deny their opponent points whereas the second player basically only has four, since there may be nothing they can do to affect their opponent's score in turn five.

    • @wolfysnack13
      @wolfysnack13 Před 3 lety

@@thepants But they get to score the final points and scoring in early rounds is generally lower because there are more units clogging objectives and you haven't had as many opportunities to cover the board yet. I actually really like going second. Obviously from 1 point of view it is playing catch up. But if you don't get caught in your opponents pace and reacting to them, instead focussing on putting yourself in position for round 4 and 5 scoring. You can potentially get some really large points in your final 2 turns and because your opponents score will always be ahead of you as they score first, they generally let their defence down to some degree and when you flip 20P on them in turn 5 it's actually very easy to either draw or win a good % of games.

These tables with no line of sight blocking terrain in the middle, while having charge reducing craters was handing the game to Ad Mech on a silver platter.
Either the terrain has to change, or the players need to have a gentleman's agreement to handicap their lists.

they burn through cp like hell, and you need to play mars with cawl ot make them this good. They are way worse in any other list.

Hello I am new to Warhammer. I impulsed bought the 8th edition rules over amazon just a week before 9th edition was announced. I was salty. But after some time I found myself gravitating back to the game.
Back then I wanted to be Grey Knights, but they were specialized against chaos forces. I looked at Space Wolves as a secondary choice. I wasn't collecting minis at this time, but we do have a dedicated Warhammer Store that really got me into the hobby through building minis. I was given a free example model, and the store owner showed me what all I had to do. I found myself buying a magazine kit where they did a generalization of the universe, but also came with another free mini. I realized then and there, I legitimately enjoyed making and painting models.
However, its the dudes here at PlayOn Tabletop that got me into wanting to play the game, and I got myself a starter kit. I love the chill and friendly attitude from all the contestants, which is wonderful. I still have a desire to play Grey Knights and Space Wolves. However, I also have grown to love Adeptus Mechanicus. I currently look forward to playing Kill Team with my own weird faction of space marines that I got out of the starter set, but I know now that Adeptus Mechanicus is going to be one of my go to primary armies for playing the regular game.
Really looking forward to seeing us win some Xenos Tech!
