- It’s finally time to build a proper solid base for our new greenhouse! I’m building this from compacted hardcore with a wet mortar mix for the paving slabs. I’m using a 5:1 mix of sharp sand and cement. Full review of the plate compactor coming soon on my Gosforth Handyman channel. The paving slabs I’m using are 450 x 450mm and this is designed for a 8’ x 10’ greenhouse.

It might be worth trying Stuart’s Proper DIY soil stabilisation method for paths / patios etc. I looked into in some detail (I am an engineer) and I’ve used it for foundations for a shed platform of a very sloping site. It really saves on labour (and costs). I rotovated an area a bit wider than the paving stones at each pedestal position to a depth of about 30 centimetres. I then rotovated a bag of cement into the soil and tamped it down. It’s absolutely solid, and very easy. No wheelbarrowing tonnes of MOT / bricks / rubble / soil. (Yes, I did a test cube first to assess the efficacy of the method, not that I don’t trust Stuart.)
Seen that - looks interesting! Although I've got so much sand left over I need to use it for something. 😂🎄

Cement and SBR slurry/ primer painted on the back of the flags before they are placed on the mortar bed is what I was shown by a paither.
Defo! Especially on a dry mix. This mix was quite wet so sticks to the slabs pretty well. 👍

But worst is the lack of light. Dark at 4pm makes it so difficult.

More useful stuff, currently ripping up a 20 year old patio (in a charming mix of pink and yellow, as was the style at the time) and will be laying a new one at some point soon. Ta for the demo, it looks good!

I'm new to working with stone and i was wondering i have been reading books about this topic and ive never seen someone put the cement under the slab like you're doing. Is there a place i could learn more about this technique?
A bit cement primer on the bottom of the slab would make them really solid 👍🏻
Cheers! I ended up using quite a wet mix in the end and with it being quite cold it seems to have dried absolutely solid. 👍💪
@@AndyMac i drench the back of the slabs with water before laying , it creates great suction between slab and mortar. Nice job .

Cheers! Considered it but it just adds another step and the coarse finish means grout wouldn't be easy wash off the edges. However with no grout it means you need to be super accurate as there's no wiggle room to correct things. 👍
Looks good what timber did you use for beds?
It's C24 treated joists. 👍
