Hail's low casualty rate gets it a reputation for being pretty mild, but considering that it does WAY more property damage than tornadoes annually, I'd argue it's actually the bigger threat.
Very few people die from hail, and as a result, people treat it casually -- with some even going so far as to run around in hail storms. But, is that really safe? At what point does hail go from "weather anomaly" to "cold-cored killer"? What size hail WILL kill you instantly? I'm gonna find out.
Thanks for watching! Got questions? Leave 'em in the comments, I really do read them!

Hi! Weather technician here. Typically when we issue warnings for hail we consider anything greater than .25in to be moderate and .50-.75in and up to be severe criteria. So you started with something thats already pretty scary to me!
It's worth noting that hail does not just fall once.
Many hail pieces would hit you, so is more dangerous.
If there's a big chungus hail it would be a disaster
@@marcoleung7253 actually big chungus was loosely based on the largest piece of hail ever recorded
@carmello ricco - that's wild dude, I just based it on how what seemed like it'd have a shot at doing real damage but that's super interesting
What velocity does hail fall at? I feel like that point wasn’t visited well in this experiment

Hail Fact: Hail is both a noun and a verb, but the verb's most frequent meanings come from a different root, the old noun 'hail' meaning 'health'.

Same with skin
@PongoThomas good comment
louis: it didn’t really do a lot of damage, there’s no real impact
*literally ripped off a giant chunk of skin, exposing the skull
Ballistics gel isn't a decent analogue for skin covered flesh. Skin has much higher tensile strength than muscle or fat. More importantly, I think the ballistics gel used here wasn't particularly dense (presumably for better jiggling).
Mostly because ballistics gel is meant for penetrative rather than blunt damage. There are way to make analogous human skin, but they aren’t really worth it for this experiment. Also ballistics gel gets soft quickly in the heat, which changes how it reacts to damage.
considering it's paintball sized hail shot at over paintball speeds and normal paintballs already can cause bruises I think this would hurt.
Saying "it makes the air rush in too slowly" is like saying
"She's fine, she's just losing a little bit of blood very quickly"
"Just give 'em some more blood"
I'm never going outside again after this video... THANKS A LOT LOUIS!

Hail almost never gets that big
Note: 'safety glass' is a broad term that refers to much more than just tempered glass. For example, laminated glass is also refered to as safety glass, and is roughly as opposite to tempered glass as you can get while still being glass.
Real hail is frozen in layers, making it a lot stronger, so this is is not a completely accurate test. Great video though!
It’s been 3 min since your comment...the video is 25 min???
@@goober09 The part where he makes the hail is in the first few minutes, and the video is 12 minutes long not 25 lol

I think your videos can be longer. I want to see how you set the air cannon to terminal velocity, or how you research the size of natural hailstones. this gives me myth buster vibes and I am here for it
i was riding a motorcycle at about 90kmph when it started hailling little piece a little bit smaller than a tic-tac. the time it took me to get off the highway and into a store i was later covered in spots of blood. the impact and water caused the skin to break and some blood to come out of each spot. it was like getting powerwashed. i was only in a t-shirt and shorts it was in the middle of summer and i decided that day to go to the dollar store buy some beach stuff for the next day. the cloud were starting to turn black and it happened very fast. the hail were covered in melted water as they came down.
So glad you are ok
@@sandrah4358 that healed pretty quick. it was very small hail, but the speed of the motorcycle added to the speed of the falling ice so that is that turned it for worst i think.
For reference, 1" hail diameter (size of quarters) is the new criterion for a severe thunderstorm based on impacts from hail. 2-inch hail is classified as "significant" by the Storm Prediction Center.
And speaking of "Big Chungus", an 8.25-inch diameter "bowling ball" hailstone was dropped on the town of Vivian, South Dakota, from a very powerful supercell, making it the largest hailstone on record. This was recorded on July 22nd, 2010.
For the G Sensor to work, doesn't the head need to be able to move? I think the rigidity of your mount is impacting your results.

This one is a real treat, it is super fun!

Ayy I recognize those shockwatches. Hope they helped out
Big time dude, thanks!
I sorta get the feeling that the pressure of your air cannon was a bit high. Any hail I've seen, no matter how hard the surface, normally bounces and is left interact. The fact that your synthetic hail is being obliterated on contact indicates they're probably hitting with a lot more force than real hail.
Really great content, keep it up bro 🔥🔥
hey lois, the idea of this video was incredible, this damage may vary for differnet age groups, and the hail stons have material thats made of water and a couple of salts, and their shape is not sperical perfectly but a little rugged deformed. i say because they can impart very different forces at the same time. evenb a one inch hailstone can kill you, the gel was tthick, the momentum imparted by the small ones can even cause sever concusions, cause i saw a very real case in front off me, itt can literally rip of that flesh on your head.
your effort here , his priceless. its lot fun to do mate.

Nice! I forgot you told me about this video, you finally made it, lookin forward to finishing the video
Awesome video man! Really entertaining and engaging :)
how did you calculate the terminal velocity of the hail and match that with the cannon?
I would guess they used the formulas for drag and the basic force equation to calculate the terminal velocity. They had a chronograph so they then used that to tune the velocity of the ice balls.
calculating the rough terminal velocity of a sphere isnt too hard thankfully.
He’s back!!!!
Another fun hail fact (or theory really) is the way hail grows in size. It's assumed it grows when it falls out of the storm and gets caught in the updraft of a storm. So it melts going down, and refreezes going up. Creating concentric growth rings as it adds mass. Its known as multiple trip theory. So the stronger the updraft, the bigger the hail!
Epic video louis!

A few years back there was a freak hail storm and the hail was around 1-1.5 inches. A lot of cars were damaged and a local mall was destroyed because the hail broke the sky lights and flooded the mall so it was closed for almost the rest of the year. The hail was so damaging it chipped the pain on my mom's Jeep wrangler which had a coating on it to prevent the paint from chiping when she is off roading, we also found out that it was coming down sideways and had damaged the door to her jeep not just the hood and she had to have them both repaired and the dents pulled out
So happy you are ok
8:44 "I think we should go for the head now" Tell that to Thor next time dude...
None of this is an accurate experiment unless you can prove hail falls from the sky at that speed. At this point it’s just shooting ice really fast, nothing makes it represent hail
Yeah, idk why they only care about the size... It doesnt make any sense
They fired it at exactly terminal velocity, which is the fastest something can get due to earth's gravity.
Love the video, I can see you put tons of work into this video BUT, I would have liked to see how close to terminal velocity those ice chunks were at. I believe I saw the chronograph set up, the weather geek in me wants to know exactly how close to irl this was. Again loved the video, I'll be back to check out more content.
Louis and NileRed/NileBlue are both absolutely insane but in a good way.
Same with thebackyardscientist and I did a thing
how do you know you are achieving terminal velocity?
This is ironic as it was hailing bullets in Northern Ireland today
your videos always have such exciting premises.

A hail stone would move at its terminal velocity.
You should have factored that in
(Or I missed something, or I’m stupid)
Not stupid but they do say at one point that they used enough psi to reach terminal velocity
@@jebbryant6522 if you push a piece of paper towards the flour you can push it faster than if you dropped it (it’s terminal velocity)
So if you fired that ice down a skyscraper wouldn’t the ice slow during free fall, because it started at its terminal velocity
Therefore without calculations the ice is going beyond its terminal velocity
Therefore more damage than if it was a normal free fall from clouds

I live in a place where we get hail every once and a while and it destroys everything in its path
Edit: you also have to remember that there are thousands of these things, just like rain but scary
It’s not what size, it’s what’s the smallest size
Drops ice burg on head
Well smallest size would have to be in the .5in range. If you are staring right into the sky and a piece of hail has formed into a thin pointed shard and it goes right into the ocular cavity. But the odds would be astronomical of even getting a piece of hail at that size to form such a particular shape and fall right when you are looking uo
Seeing those shock sensors had me remembering Mythbusters......God I miss them, RIP Grant.
There was a hailstorm in Denver in 1990 with up to softball size hail...People were stranded on a ride at Six Flags when power failed due the storm. The storm was dropping just golf ball size hail in that area but still caused lots of injury. Nothing too serious but still scary. In Downtown Denver, just half a mile away to the East from the amusement park, the hail was softball size. That would have been absolute carnage had that part of the storm been just a half mile West. Yikes.
This reminds me of that one movie where a hail fell onto a car and it was the size of a table
10:20 just walk it off
GG EZ
When I was seven in 1997 we had a terrible hail storm in Kansas. My dad, my brother, and myself were trapped in his truck a few blocks from home when it started. I don't know how we made it home because I just remember the visibility being nearly zero because of the size and amount of hail falling. We decided to run from the car to our house when we are parked out front and my brother got nailed in the head by chunk that was softball sized. Now it could've probably been closer to baseball size but the way I remember it being was gigantic, but I was seven. It gave him a concussion and he ended up having to go to the hospital after the storm had passed.
I love your videos so much
Problems:
-I dont see calculations or experiments for terminal velocity on these hail stones.
-hail is not solid ice. These have a very different density to actual hail. Thus their terminal velocity may be different aswell. Not to mention their ability to concentrate force or deliver energy into the skull exct.
Nobody asked but everyone cared
This is dope af
In Wyoming where I live last year we had 2” hail but 2 years ago we had 3/4” hail.
It was scary it broke all the windows on the cars totaled all the vehicles except the mini van that we used to leave.
One time In Colorado while on a road trip there was a hail storm while we were driving and it cracked the windshield. Another time in my neighborhood in texas we had a hail storm that broke a few windows, and roofs.
I like how this is becoming myth busters
I’m interested to know how solid the hail was. All the hail I’ve seen especially the larger chunks aren’t the most solid things it feels like compressed shaved ice and has air bubbles inside
If I recall correctly, and I read this in a book, Poland had Hail the size of grapefruit. Luckily no one died (I think it was also in the 1990's as well)
I volunteer to test this on my back 🙋🏽♂️
