      It really depends on the interpretation. Rocco's Milan won the European Cup in 1968 fielding 3 forwards (Hamrin, Sormani, and Prati) plus the attacking midfielder Rivera, and destroying 4-1 the rising star of Crujiff's Ajax. Herrera's Inter had Peiro' as centre-forward, Jair and Corso wingers (the latter took no defensive duties), Mazzola attacking midfielder (who started his career as a forward), Suarez playmaker, and the left back Facchetti acting as an extra forward when attacking (top scorer amongst the defenders in the history of Italian football). Italy was WC runner up in 1970 with 4 attacking-minded players: 2 forwards (Riva and Boninsegna), a winger (Domenghini), and one attacking midfielder (Mazzola or Rivera), plus the playmaker De Sisti, Facchetti (see above), and Cera as libero (a midfielder converted into defender who acted as additional playmaker).

  • @lazios
    @lazios Před 7 lety +143

    Sry for my "eng", but I can't resist.. I hope you understand.
    What you call "catenaccio" in Italy It's simply the ability to verticalize the game.. only this.
    Italy never has just defended (as some would have you believe to denigrate Italian football) but has always done the "contropiede".
    Coincidentally today are called "ripartenze".. counterattack, and no one is ashamed more, maybe someone is tired of never win? LOL
    In fact in all our wins (and are not few ... or am I wrong?), We have always been the team that scores more (or in any case among those that scored more).
    Some countries like the ball possession (Spain, Portugal and Brasil), others focus on physical strength and technique also (Germany, Argentina.. partially England also).
    Others like Italy, as I wrote before, prefer to play speed and verticalize.
    But if anyone believes that go the entire football-field with two, three or four ball touches It's something easy, has never played football.
    And yet the famous "tiki taka", that like so much, I think it's deadly boring..
    The winner is who scores goals.. not the one who has more ball possession.
    To use the words of a famous Italian player and team-Chairman:
    -La vittoria non è importante... è l'UNICA cosa che conta.
    -The victory is not important.. It's the ONLY thing that matters.

    • @shottskies
      @shottskies Před 7 lety +23

      I agree lazios. I am an Italian football supporter and whenever people speak of "catenaccio" they always like to put it down as if it was football's darkest hour. they don't like to portray it in a positive light and often suggest that any trophy supposedly earned using the system wasn't worthy. Garbage... Football, at the professional level at least, is a highly strategic game and such is it's beauty.
      I'm not talking about this channel here but I'd say the majority of people that slander "catenaccio" probably have no idea what they're talking about and most probably couldn't teach anything to Italians about football. ITALIANS KNOW FOOTBALL.

    • @maxigol1977
      @maxigol1977 Před 7 lety +9

      shottskies I am Italian and I agree. I believe that the issue is that in World Football we confuse catenaccio: is it " defense and counter attack" or " just defending" . No disrespect to Greece, but in 2004 they were the latter. they would score a goal by the grace of God and then just defend. No shame in that, but they tried the same exact thing 4 years later and were out in the first round. Same with Chelsea when they won the CL in 2012. To this day, DiMatteo has no idea how the hell he made it through the last 3 games.

    • @TheLordoftheRavens
      @TheLordoftheRavens Před 7 lety +15

      +lazios I agree that tiki taka is a very boring style of play. Who wants to see 90 minutes of defensive midfielders passing the ball around? Tiki taka is a safe style of play completely devoid of risk (and therefore is also quite effective), but it makes the game seem much slower and less competitive. Just look at Spain in the 2010 World Cup. They won, but they played some of the most mind-numbing football I have ever seen. I care primarily about how entertaining football is, so I prefer faster games that often have more goals.

    • @TheLordoftheRavens
      @TheLordoftheRavens Před 7 lety +3

      +Basan Basan I disagree. Guardiola's system is actually pretty weak defensively, primarily due to his insistence on playing out of the back. At Barcelona and Bayern, the players had the individual quality to make this risky style of play work. But at Man City, where the players aren't quite as good, you can see clear defensive vulnerabilities. So I guess you could say tiki taka is an ideal defensive system if the players can win basically every one on one situation, but that doesn't happen very often. Only the best players in the world can regularly perform at this level.

    • @TheLordoftheRavens
      @TheLordoftheRavens Před 7 lety +1

      +Basan Basan You do realize that Guardiola teams rely heavily on pressing, right? So first you said Guardiola made football more interesting, but then you said pressing lowers the quality of matches. So you're saying Guardiola's style of play is simultaneously interesting but also bad in terms of quality? That doesn't really make sense.
      Personally, I actually don't mind certain kinds of pressing. It's a very active form of defense and it increases the pace of the game. It counters slow, boring, possession-based football quite well. And like you said, it leads to more counterattacks, which are often very entertaining to watch. I suppose it is a bit risky, though, so it's not necessarily the safest defensive strategy.

    Why do you think Conte is dominating the premier league with Chelsea? He resurrected Catenaccio, which was commonplace in Italian football in the 90's (when Conte was a player) and has implemented an upgraded, tweaked take on it in modern times with Juventus, Italy and Chelsea. When done right its hard to beat.

    • @enricogherardo5426

      Wow, there's a lot of misconceptions in this post.
      Catenaccio was common in Italy During the '60s and the '70s, absolutely not in the '90s.
      Italian footbal changed skin during the '80s, especially after the rise of Sacchi's Ac Milan.

      “Zona mista” often referred to as Gioco all'italiana ("The Game in the Italian Style"), is a tactic used in Italian association football mainly from the second half of 1970s to the mid-1990s.
      The introduction of this system has been attributed to Luigi Radice and Giovanni Trapattoni, then coaches of Torino and Juventus, respectively. The tactic reached the highest sporting level with Trapattoni's Juventus becoming the first club in history to reach the European Treble having won the three seasonal UEFA competitions.
      Regarded as the tactical evolution of catenaccio, zona mista requires each outfield player to perform, systematically and simultaneously, zonal marking, the changing of positions and continuous attack on the spaces characteristic of totaalvoetbal, but also engaging in the defensive individual marking characteristic of Italian football.
      The Italian tactic came to dominate national football in the late 1970s and early 1980s and reached its height with the highly successful Giovanni Trapattoni's Juventus and the Italian national team coached by Enzo Bearzot,[mostly in their victory in the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
      Its popularity, however, eventually led to its undoing as Italian teams became predictable. Ernst Happel's Hamburg would expose some of the predictability of the style against Juventus with a defensive approach in the 1983 European Champions' Cup Final.[
      However, the Torinese side continued to employ this tactic system with great success over the next decade under the management of Trapattoni and his former goalkeeper Dino Zoff.

    I learnt this one from you guys... "The perfect football game would end 0-0". However u entertaining its true. There should be less negative connotations concerning defensive football. All great teams like all great militaries are built on a solid and reliable defensive core. Funnily enough, the 2009-10 Internazionale Milano team that won the treble and UCL was the finest I've ever seen assembled. Them, United 99 and England 66 of course 😊 And it mainly worked so well due to its defensive spine. Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Zanetti and Cambiasso are true legends of defence. Its what allowed Eto'o and Sneijder to thrive up front. Defence is not the eviction of attack, it is the house of the attack. It is not the enemy, but the basis, not the demolition plans but the groundwork for the architecture of the attack.

    The thing is the great italian team would play lovley attacking football until they sofer 1 or two goals, in which they would result to catenaccio, lovley defensive football

    I hope you'll understand what I write, despite my eng (sorry) because the topic interests me; ok, I try to say my opinion now.
    You explained the "catenaccio" history but the point I want to talk is another, and it's about italian football (in general) and the national team, because I don't know why (no knowledge? Maybe young age?) but many people don't know what they're talking about.
    The italian national teams never did the "catenaccio" as you understand it (you call it "parking the bus" right?) but another thing.
    The italian traditional football it's very simple but hard to do at the same time; defense and fast counterattack (exactly what Klopp's Liverpool do now for example), it could be said that it's the opposite of the Spain game philosophy (to better understand; the tiki-taka by Guardiola).
    But let's get to the point; really you can define one good and the other bad? In my opinion the answer is NO, are simply different philosophies and each of the two can be beautiful and winning, or boring and losing.
    If you don't have players as Xavi and Iniesta the so-called "tiki-taka" it's ugly and boring to watch, minutes and minutes of ball possession without ever verticalizing and/or shooting on goal, this is beautiful football? I have many doubts.
    In the same way if the "italian style" becomes defense, defense and defense again (that's the catenaccio who you intend) the game is boring and even uglier than bad tiki-taka.
    I want to make an example now talking about the Mancini's national team (to explain my football vision); this team plays very well, does ball possession and creates many scoring chances but what are the points? The first is that scores few goals and the second (most important for me and I believe any italian) is that if this team wins nothing, to nobody will give a damn about "the good play or the ball possession" because football it's other than this stats; who scores more than the opponent wins (not who has 70% of ball possession).
    I am old, and I remember the 1982 italian national team, they scoring goals in 3 passes and fews seconds (who thinks it's easy, have no idea what football is), that team had more technique than 90% of the today teams (the so-called "tiki taka" or others) and were much fun to watching also, they defeated the Maradona's Argentina team first, and after one of the best Brazil team ever (with players like Zico, Socrates, Eder, Falcao etc).
    They played "all'italiana" (italian), so not catenaccio or ball possession but individual technique, tactical application, defense, fast counterattack and goal; that's the italian football.
    I add one last thing (sorry for the length of this kind of poem); football is a simple game, useless try to complicate it.

      Exactly the reason for that brother is Coz both dani alves and xavi are gone they very integral part in playmaking and their chemistry with messi inesta and busquests was breathtaking ... Inesta is getting older and Right now neymar is creating and playmaking thats the reason messi is scoring soo much.....
      But we need a worldclass midfielder coz what dont have that much depth in our squad...
      We are losing possesion soomuch now
