  • Martin Van Buren was an interesting fellow. He was the first president born after American independence from Britain, so he was the first president actually born an American citizen. Also, he was the first president of non-British ancestry, as his parents were Dutch. He was a senator, a governor, Secretary of State, and Vice President, all before becoming President. Oh, and he co-founded the Democratic Party. What didn't this guy do? Let's learn some more!

Martin Van Buren did benefit from slavery personally and professionally , at the same time spoke on the " moral evil" behind it all ... Supported evil, spoke against evil, Martin Van Buren did do ... Abraham Van Buren, son, of Martin Van Buren own a slave or two in he's lifetime ... No disrespect, I see hypocrisy ...

Can we really call W. Harrison a weak president when he had the shortest time in office before dying. I mean, Taylor had more time to do something than Harrison

You would think after helping Jackson win his presidency and running as Jackson's Secretary of State and VP Van Buren know that people tend to favor war heroes when he tried to run against W. Harrison and Taylor

I've been watching these videos and enjoying your method of summarizing history. However, I do have one complaint: the way you talked about the 'weakness' of the post-founder pre-civil war presidents (is 'antebellum' the right word to use?) towards the end of the video.
In the first few episodes of this series, you went out of your way to explain that America only functioned through the balance between the ideals of big government and small government, tyranny and anarchy, security and freedom. Yet here you berate these men who embody that concept (in the balance between the southern slave states and northern states).
It is true that Great Britain abolished slavery across their empire around the time of Van Buren's presidency, but their economic base was very different from the US's (and besides, they still treated subjugated people like the Indians as effectively slaves with their disgusting policy of profit over all else). Further, living at the time, I'd imagine it impossible for many if any pragmatic or moderate politicians to even consider a version of the South without the institution of slavery, considering it was quite literally older than America itself.
I'm not trying to defend slavery, and I agree that the Civil War was inevitable and that Lincoln did what was necessary. But I just want to point out that you're applying too modern of a lens to people who knew the union to be junior to and possibly even more fragile than the institution of slavery.
