    9:55 You're absolutely correct. Americans are very forgiving when it comes to the English language. We appreciate those trying and making an effort even it they have a thick accent or can't pronounce words correctly. Generally speaking, most Americans won't make fun of you or try to embarrass you. We have more of an issue with people who live here (not just visiting) and don't want to learn English at all. If I moved to another country, at the top of my priority list would be to learn their language. Great job with this video! Greetings from SoCal!

      As a 25 year old from Texas I can also confirm although I'd add that if you are moving to Texas DO NOT TRY TO EMULATE A SOUTHERN ACCENT everyone who does have a southern accent does it naturally and it is frighteningly easy for them to spot a fake accent.

    @mitchellhodgemeyer7306 Před 7 lety +60

    Marina,
    American here: Rising intonation or high intonation at the end of a sentence most commonly denotes a question, but it can also be a statement of surprise, anger, confusion or as a way to signify a need for clarity on what is being discussed. In the example you gave about asking to go to a party, the first sentence was a question. The response you gave would typically only have high intonation if the person asked was unsure if they wanted to go, or it could also be that they were trying to say no to going to going to the party in a way that wasn't explicitly non-committal. Basically they would be trying to get out of going to the party without telling their friend a definitive "no."
    It is also true that younger people, and also what we call "drama queens," tend to use more rising intonation in their speech than others typically do. This seems especially true for "urban hipster" types and people that consider themselves cool, although this last part may just be my own perception.

    That is a californian "accent", or a "valley girl accent". I am an american, 98% of the advice was good... I don't say Oh man often, I mostly say "OH COME OOON!" The o is extended for dramatic effect. it is kind of funny to analyze your own common phrases. Like when I do something clumsy like knock something off a table I will say, " that wasn't me" or "who did that!" and my common greeting is "hey, whats up"

    I enjoyed the video, your accent and understanding of American English are excellent. Just one note, the accent and speech patterns to which you referred are distinctly Californian. I am a native Californian from just south of Los Angeles and can tell you dispositively that the speech patterns you demonstrated are found almost entirely in California and very little outside this state. Even the other west coast and southwest states are quite different. Take a trip to Washington state, Texas, Minnesota, Maine, Massachusetts, or Iowa and you will find VERY different accents. Just outside of California you will find those speech patterns you reviewed in the video fade away quickly as you move further from the border of California. One thing to keep in mind about accents in America is that we all know that people exist outside of the U.S. and many people will appreciate the differences you will bring. You don't need to completely lose your accent to be completely accepted by your community no matter where you are. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a totally foreign sounding name and spoke with a thick and very foreign accent but was accepted so thoroughly he was voted Governor of our most populous state, California. Learn all the English language and American customs you need to communicate and fit in but you will be best served retaining much of who you were previous to moving to California so that you can add that to your new community. Good luck in your business endeavors and "Have a great one!"

The true story of this revolution was that the royalty was thrown out by a secret middle class who used poor people's requests to set up their domination. For sure, things was not perfect during the royalty era and some things had to change but merchants and loan sharks came into "the temple" for their own interests and now the true people is still suffering.

    Best advice, is to get native American friends, and the rest will come naturally, as long as you try. Also don't stress too much about sounding too foreign. You want to sound more native of course but having a foreign accent is never frowned upon, especially in cities that are more diverse.

    As a native American speaker that's actually a good try. But I can still tell that you're not originally from American. A few tips.
    1. "Like" isn't exactly a substitute for a pause per say. People do say "like" as a verbal tic, filling the space to prevent pauses, but it's also used when still in the process of thought while describing things. For example when describing the size of something "This dog is big. Like REALLY big".
    2. Using profaninty excessively in public is actually looked down upon, so the use of "shoot" instead of "sh**t" is great advice.
    3. We don't say "Oh man", we say "Aw man". Aw with the wide a sound as if you saw something cute. Looks similar but the pronounciation is different. Other words that a lot of foreigners don't notice but we use all the time are "You've got to be kidding me" / "No way" (I can't believe that just happened). Literally (adds emphasis on what you are about to say) "I literally can't eat another bite" means "I most certainly cannot eat anymore" for example.
    4.Informal greetings like "What's up?" "Hi" "Hey" "Howdy" "How's it going / How's it hanging (uncommon)?" Are usually used towards friends, and in public. "Hello" "Greetings" "Good morning /evening" are usually used towards more formal greetings. Both of these forms of greetings may be used interchangeably though depending on the person.
    5. Americans from where you live don't represent the entire country in terms of how they speak (California, Texas, and New York for example all speak in different ways). Not to mention the slang used in the more urban areas. Getting to know where people are from and getting an idea of their dialects in those areas may surprise you in how diverse even English is from here.
    6. Rising intonation or up talking is more so a bad habit than proper american speech. It shouldn't be used in formal settings as it is commonly taken as a person who is speaking on something that they are unsure about. Mostly it's used when an American is either asking a question or needs validation (which is why most teens and women tend to use it) so answering with rising inotation is uncommon and usually used if the person responding also doesn't know how to answer the question asked.
    7. I would also highly recommend learning what English words NOT to say as well. Racial slurs, derogatory terms, hate speech, sexual talk, etc. Are all considered pretty taboo and low class to speak in public. It would help too so you know not fall towards looking like the typical "insensitive uncultred foreigner".

    This is a good video. I think you've covered some valuable points in an interesting way. By the way, I've read some of the comments on this video putting down your English. A native would know you are not a native, but who cares! I think you sound quite natural.

    As an American, I'm worried now that we're considered shallow because we don't go into detail about how our days went XD

    person 2, internally: I was not fine

    First thing I do after meeting an American, is tell them where I'm from. This way psychologically, they fine-tune their ears/mind to understand what I'm about to say {dialect/slang}

      Smart!!! As an American I would personally really appreciate this haha. I hate to admit it, but when we speak to people we automatically assume that English is their first language, because we don’t have as much exposure to other languages. I think giving us that knowledge so that we can process what you are about to say better will make us feel really comfortable around you. Sorry about the long comment. Love from America!
