Hi Guy, Don Freeman here. I co-wrote this song. I played that bass line on a Roland Juno 60 on the 8 track demo. I thought the bass line was so crazy that no one would record it. Have a safe surgery

Yeah & I'm guessing Guy hadn't played that bass line for some time...
I always find that bassists like Guy Pratt/Mark King/Pino Palladino & many others are easily approacable to have a quick hand shake/a chat or a photograph opportunity...
The thing I think is universal with bassists is they'll happily play a bass cover from a song they played on years ago but they are happy to not to get so hung up on it being perfect & by the way that's a sweet sounding Spectre bass guitar which I think Guy got into them when recording this as I thing Bernard Edwards told Guy there's no need to bring a bass guitar as they had them in the studio & the one he played on the recorded version is either on this or another recording & Guy has been a fan of those dpectre bass guitars for quite some time now...
I love the sound but I've never been a huge fan of the stacked side by side middle pickups that look like your playing dominoes...
I've always preferred the 2 evenly spaced apart single pickups but there's no denying this Spectre sounds great & can anyone let me know what model this is & where is the original origin country as so many bass guitars are outsourced to Indonesia/China & other foreign countries & I have no issue buying those basses as they look & sound great but the origin country would be a great starting point but no I've remembered , I'm on the internet therefore I can search for this information myself... D'Oh!

Robert Palmer is my fav artist of all time! I own every album ! This song is underrated. Robert released it 2 times and sadly still failed to make any impact . You def make an impact!

Robert Palmer used to play a lot of pubs and clubs in my hometown of Hull which had a huge live music scene with something approaching 150 venues with live music then. Pre Vinegar Joe, he was a popular character on the Hull scene in the late 60’s. He became well known amongst many other Hull musos as a nice guy and a good guitarist / vocalist. Strangely everyone knew him as Alan Palmer then......Robert wasn’t being used at that time.

When Bernard Edward's says be on time for one.....your on fucking time!......funk all about the one......took me back to that highly sparkly produced days of the eighties when the words less is more would of gotten you killed and MTV ruled the world......listened to to latest pod cast on Sunday evening m8 while cooking curry for the family ...somewhat of a tradition now in our home....mr idol what can you say....I loved the fact that boath you and gary had those classic moments when you must have looked at one another and gone shit he's not joking...he really can't fucking remember....just how that man managed to get a autobiography together is a minor miracle........who ever he got in as a ghost writer for that little project certainly earned their money!....glad to hear your on the mend m8....stay well ...love daz

Hiya Guy - great video. Yes I’m a big Robert Palmer fan and love all the Island albums Robert released plus the EMI albums especially ‘Honey’ ~ I actually did an interview w / Dony Wynn via email a good few years ago for a blog I used to do post Robert’s passing. Yes, fascinating to hear your backdrop to DOL and Bernard Edwards etc I always thought ‘Amazing’ should have been a massive hit. I wish I could have seen Robert Palmer in concert and equally to have met him - he sounded a major dude. I think ‘Double Fun’ is a great LP. Anyway cheers Guy - you are one of my favourite bass players. Best Wishes, Marc

That Spector tone really smooths the track out, slapped on a Jazz bass would've risked turning it into an 80's cop show soundtrack 😎 I still think the unsuspecting public could be schooled by a lesser known article of brilliance such as Waiting For The Sunshine, Beautiful, or Only love Could Bring Us Home from Jimmy Nails Growing Up In Public album. Bloody marvellous pieces of work Guy, thanks for that. Hope the shoulder doesn't f*** your Christmas up too much 🤕

I recall someone asking Guy about the "creative process" and the response was all good snark. It seems to me that all of the anecdotes, history, and humor *IS* the creative process (e.g. "don't bring your bass" or "you can do whatever the you want as long as you land on the one" or "this is the part of the song where I do my thing up on this part of the neck").

Yes, please post something about the Don't Explain songs you did; "You're Amazing" is a cool track, it was the first US single and it was top 30 so some people do know it, though it's usually left off RP compilations since those tend to focus on UK hits.

That's a pretty cool song! The only time I'd ever heard of Robert Palmer before this video was when Simon Gallup shouted "Fuck Robert Palmer and fuck rock'n roll" when The Cure had to cut their set short at the 1981 Werchter festival.
