Sometimes, even when you love someone, and you know they did their best, you still know the damage they did to you. You don't want your children going through that same hurt.
It’s one thing to understand Archie and not judge him too harshly, but I think people give him too much credit. I wouldn’t want to be raised by somebody like that. Sometimes grown children forget everything their parents went through raising them. All the sacrifices they made. Some of the problems brought forth weren't by them but by a child's desire to rebel. Until a child is truly on their own they won't appreciate the sacrifices they made.
I use to watch All In The Family everyday with my mom., and when it aired for the first time with my father. Great show and I miss it very much. I love it. The comedy shows these days can't compare. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If I recall, this episode wasn’t about denying access to Joey. It was about deciding who would be Joey’s legal guardian if something were to happen to Mike and Gloria. They wanted to name their friends Al and Trudy, and this upset Archie and Edith. The compromise was that they didn’t name anyone to be a guardian because Mike and Gloria promised each other that they were never going to die. Of course, under those circumstances if Mike and Gloria did die, Archie and Edith would most likely be named Joey’s guardians since they would be his closest living relatives.
Denying them seeing him? They clearly are discussing who would raise him if something happened. Just because someone supports you and loves their grandkids, it doesn't mean they would be the best people to raise your kids in your place.
He didn’t start out that way and somewhere along the years writers had come and gone and the show’s direction changed. Going from more of a comedy to more of a tragedy.
The show was really ahead of its time in describing how politics can break up families. Meathead is a precursor to the jerks who "cancel" their parents for having a wrong opinion.
Although it’s pretty forgotten today. Carol O’Connor push the network to give Sally Struthers her own show called Gloria. Once the studio okayed the series, the first thing, Sally Struthers did was fire every producer that Carol O’Connor had hired for the show and replace them with her friends. The show was a disaster and was cancelled after 1 season. Carol O’Connor never spoke to Sally Struthers again. Neither did Jean Stapleton.

@@jyesucevitzIn this episode, both Gloria and Michael decided that if they suddenly died, they would legally arrange for their friends to raise their little son instead of Gloria parents. Great point. Archie may have his opinions, but he demonstrated his love and care for his little Joey. Put your politics aside. Mike children are innocent.
Alienating the grandparents from a grand child hurts the grandchild most of all. It’s like watching the night sky and seeing your favorite stars burn out and disappear.
We've dealt with sort of the opposite: a grandparent who alienated her daughter (my wife), and by extension, her grandchild. Last saw him the summer before he went into kindergarten; he just graduated high school.
A very tough scene to watch. My husband and I aren't allowed to see our 2 gorgeous granddaughters (My punishment for calling the police to check on them when i believed they were being harmed). We've not seen them in 4 years and miss them beyond words.
Were they actually being harmed? If not, then your panic caused a lot of trouble and drama for an innocent family. You pull that kind of crap with me, I wouldn't let you see the kids either.
I didn't like the way Gloria let Mike bully her into going against Archie. All those years Mike freeloaded in Archie house. And never replayed him. Never go against your parents for a man. That's why Mike divorced her a$$. Once he got educated.
@@lovewhitey4462 Mike, Gloria and Joey moved to California. While in California, Mike went off the deep-end, and wanted Gloria and Joey to move to a commune, along with one of his female students.
Well, of course younger generations are all in control of how the economy is run. Obviously. People who have to struggle to finance education - which should be free - obviously have all the social advantages. Next time? Why don't you try using your brain?
No, I was not OK when this happened in the episode. Let Archie and Edith be with Joey. Archie is a good guy. You can tell despite all the things that he may say or believe he has a good heart. I can tell you whatever your political beliefs are in life whether it’s left right center, politics do not make the person. A lot of time even if we don’t agree on certain things we find out that we are good people and that’s what really matters.
Families and friends break apart because of politics. Always someone opening their mouth, when instead they should have kept it shut. Then have a stupid Pikachu face when someone confronts them on their beliefs they keep openly force out onto them.
@@user-bq2xc2fl6l So, DUDE! How do you respond to that? This country already tears itself apart so it can discriminate against people who aren't white, straight, male, or cis. He knows Archie is a terrible role model for Gloria and his child. You need to get right with yourself to be a truly good grandparent. If you hate others, if you discriminate? You are unhealthy in your mind and need to work yourself out. Clearly, this show is being hugely inaccurate to how good a parent and grand parent Archie is.
I met Jean Stapleton in midtown Manhattan many years ago. She was so nice and gracious and beautiful! She was a great woman who represented all of us, everyday women in everyday life with such talent and care. She spoke for us.
This show was so true to life. That generation may have seemed insensitive and unaware of racism or other prejudices, but that doesn't mean that they won't do the right thing when it's right in their face. Archie said insensitive, thoughtless things, but when it came time to do the right thing, he did. I've seen that with parts of my family. Great acting and writing. Television is truly missing out on this level of artistry now.
Sometimes grown children forget everything their parents went through raising them. All the sacrifices they made. Some of the problems brought forth weren't by them but by a child's desire to rebel. Until a child is truly on their own they won't appreciate the sacrifices they made.
I loved All In The Family. Truly those were days for me. With all the laughs there were many touching moments.
I use to watch All In The Family everyday with my mom., and when it aired for
the first time with my father.
Great show and I miss it very much. I love it.
The comedy shows these days can't compare.

Archie and Edith supported them then deny letting seeing little Joey grow up just so sad . Rip Archie and Edith
@@SCGMLBright
How cruel. 😢
Denying them seeing him? They clearly are discussing who would raise him if something happened. Just because someone supports you and loves their grandkids, it doesn't mean they would be the best people to raise your kids in your place.
That was so sad Edith. And Archie loved their grandson , 😢😢😢
Meatface was OK with letting actual men fight a war for him, and letting Archie feed him and give him a bed.
Edith was kind, generous, loyal, and true. Never betrayed her husband or her family.
Mike was such an unlikable character
Despicable is more like it. Gloria is no better
A heavy word to throw around with such nonchalance.
He didn’t start out that way and somewhere along the years writers had come and gone and the show’s direction changed. Going from more of a comedy to more of a tragedy.
I had a problem with Gloria's screeching and "Lucy Ricardo's" crying. Didn't like the character.
Still is!
The only worthwhile people from that show were O'Connor and Stapleton.
Struthers and Reiner have long since proved their inhumanity.
Sally herself did that or had it done, or it was simply out of her hands?
When television was worth watching. Today's viewing isn't even good enough for a dumpster!!
Beautiful scene. What a brilliant series.
Rob Reiner played himself in “All in the Family” a real life meathead
😮.
He is a disgusting individual and the beautiful Gloria deserved so much better to play her husband.
You're absolutely right. Reiner is a disgusting pathetic excuse for a human being
But tRump is God's gift to humanity, right skippy??
@@ronleight9341 Trump's a helluva lot better than that senile incompetent traitor, Beijing Biden, snowflake
Now they drop the children off at the grandparents and say…You raise them!
Meathead did not get any better in real life
His only saving grace (and it was a considerable one) was "The Princess Bride"

Reading all these comments - what a tribute to the writers of All In The Family! These storylines were so well written that we all got caught up in this family drama that they became a real part of all our lives. Testament to one of the best groundbreaking series for its time.
There was nothing like it on television before or since.
One of the very best shows of all time!
I could not stand Gloria's husband 😢
Meat head. He is still a meat head.
You know NOTHING ABOUT COMEDY or drama. Archie needed a "foil".
@@DEAD-FROM-NY 🙄 I can still dislike a character.
Gloria wasn't much better.
Mike was a self righteous dickhead at times
This is heartbreaking.
Edith reminds me of my Mom, love you Ma.. Thank you for your wisdom. Miss you😊
Amen !
God, Jean Stapleton was REALLY the real deal. WHAT an AMAZING actress she was.
It seems that Mike had a lot to do with Gloria's decision. He was the one that manipulated Gloria's thinking.
would you mind telling me the situation? i couldn't find out anything in the comments.
ty.
Mike and Gloria made a will and named friends of theirs Joey's guardians instead of Archie and Edith.
@@jyesucevitzIn this episode, both Gloria and Michael decided that if they suddenly died, they would legally arrange for their friends to raise their little son instead of Gloria parents.
The reason was because Michael didn't want their son to be raised and instilled with Archie's viewpoints of life (concerning bigotry, gun ownership, politics, religion beliefs, etc. )

Thank you !
@@kristinholsapple2587👍😊
It amounts to fear of such a big commitment.
I remember seeing this episode when it first aired… I thought then it was terribly cruel…..I had so much love for sweet Edith. Jean Stapleton was absolutely brilliant!❤
I wish we could do it all over again. Those were great days.
Archie and Edith raised Gloria. Meathead doesn't want Archie taking care of Joey because of meathead's closely held beliefs, despite the proof of the one he married and had a child with, Gloria. These are the kind of people you have to deal with everyday. Keep the meatheads out of your life.
Great point. Archie may have his opinions, but he demonstrated his love and care for his little Joey. Put your politics aside. Mike children are innocent.
Just because by some miracle Gloria didn't grow up to be a bigot doesn't mean Joey wouldn't.
He was a commie. Typical.
Get rid of the bigots in your life. I had a stepdad who shoved his beliefs down our throats. Wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Amen!
One of the best shows ever produced. The Jefferson’s and especially Maude. ❤️👍🏽😎
All In the Family was one of the greatest!! But never cared at all, for Maude and the Jeffersons!!
You must love 2023. Those shows were the vanguard of the insanity we enjoy today.
That's not this. This is about being the parents if they died.
There will never be another show like this one. It is a timeless classic that could never be made in today's world.
A very tough scene to watch. My husband and I aren't allowed to see our 2 gorgeous granddaughters (My punishment for calling the police to check on them when i believed they were being harmed). We've not seen them in 4 years and miss them beyond words.
I am so sorry 😢 Good people are always the ones to suffer because of crazies
Same here with my 4 beautiful nieces. Brother an alcoholic, sister in law unstable.
My sister-in-law was so angry my brother cheated on her she refuses to let our family see our nephew. Last time we saw him, he was 5, now he's 13.
That's vicious. Children need grandparents
Really is that what happened on the show 💔🤬
@@lovewhitey4462 Mike, Gloria and Joey moved to California. While in California, Mike went off the deep-end, and wanted Gloria and Joey to move to a commune, along with one of his female students.
Gloria cheated on Mike, that’s why the split up.

I have watched the show forever and a day and I still watch it to this day I love All in the Family every one of them was a good actor and actress😊❤
Archie loved joey so sad especially for Edith 💔
people can be so unappreciative, always think they are better & wiser, especially to the older generation
Yup!!!! Dealt with this very scenario.
Jean Stapleton played Edith perfectly. A truly great actress. She showed tremendous depth with her character.
Jean Stapleton was a wonderful actress and did so well in All in the family!
Ungrateful Gloria and Mike...they take Archie's money without hesitation.
I remember this being on when I was at my grandparents. I just remember feeling like the woman was a sweet angel and the man was always yelling 😂
Meathead is a self-proclaimed genius (eye roll). On the show and in real life...
Right?.. he didn’t even have to act in his role
Gloria irritated me. She was very gullible.. she could have easily been in Charles Manson’s cult!
She was only child many are that way . Spoiled also
That comment took a sharp turn, but it's funny asl 😂
@@DChristina if she let Meathead get to her.. what makes you think Charlie Manson couldn’t? Lol
LOL 😅 😆 🤣
She's a wandering soul...aka "No foundation in reality." I'm sure Archie provided one...she simply refused to anchor herself to it.
I hated meathead then, and I feel the same disrespect for the man who played the role.
So, then you have absolutely no clue about anything?
@@user-bq2xc2fl6l So, DUDE! How do you respond to that? This country already tears itself apart so it can discriminate against people who aren't white, straight, male, or cis. And Meathead wants to stand up for the oppressed people and that just plain rules. Good for him. He doesn't have to be perfect, he gets it.
@@user-bq2xc2fl6l Yeah, and it's mostly those who claim to be accepting and tolerant who are actually the complete opposite.

I met Jean Stapleton in midtown Manhattan many years ago. She was so nice and gracious and beautiful! She was a great woman who represented all of us, everyday women in everyday life with such talent and care. She spoke for us.
I never missed an episode. Loved Edith.
I chuckle a lot every time I watch these scenes from All in the Family. You just wonder how they came up with these weekly shows.
Real life experiences
@KimberlyEder-uw7te He did, especially when he thought he was invited to Lionel 's wedding reception. It was George who didn't want him there.
This show had several good and not so good points over it's run, this was one of the very good points.
Lots of distrust of other groups of people, but they were kind to people when they did interact.
Gloria was the real meathead, not sticking up for her parents and in the end cheats on mike.
I remember Mike cheating on Gloria, but I don't remember Gloria cheating on Mike
Meathead turned out to be a real meathead later in life!
Best tv sh9w EVER!!
There was tv before All in the Family and tv after. Truly a game changer. The best.
Michael thought he was more open-minded and sophisticated than Archie, but he was wrong about so many things and was sometimes a hypocrite. I'm glad that Edith put Michael in his place.
Meanwhile Rob Reiner is still in character over 40 years later.
