About Maude: Gutsy, smart, outspoken, and liberal -- all are terms that describe Beatrice Arthur in the title role of the TV series that spun off from the popular All in the Family. Well-educated and upper-middle-class, Maude Findlay is the archetypal feminist of her generation. She lives in suburban Tuckahoe, New York, with her fourth husband, Walter (Bill Macy), their divorced daughter, Carol (Adrienne Barbeau), and grandson Phillip. The cast also includes Rue McClanahan as Maude's best friend Vivian; Walter's best friend and neighbor Dr. Arthur Harmon (Conrad Bain); and over the course of the series, three different maids (Esther Rolle, Hermione Baddeley and Marlene Warfield). Tough issues like abortion, alcoholism, women's liberation, menopause and politics are all fodder for the show's sharp wit and social commentary.

It’s amazing that this is the same conversation that we are having in 2024
yes now its about trasgender
It's not amazing, it's sad 😢
Apparently obvious.
Good grief.
I could not have said it better myself.
The show is 50 years old and still relevant and I'm not sure if that is good or bad.
Not good.
Depends on the circumstances of the dilemma at the time in question.
“Well, now I wouldn’t say that.”
The little man from the draftboard in the classic 1945 animated short subject picture of “DRAFTEE DAFFY”.
That's Definitely Bad
Bad 😢
Bea Arthur was a real broad. And I mean that in the best way possible.
Likewise.
Neither Bea nor Maude would have appreciated that term. God is going to get you for that.
“Well, now I wouldn’t say that.”
The little man from the draftboard in the classic 1945 animated short subject picture of “DRAFTEE DAFFY”.
@@marccardiff haha, I see what you did there, clever.
Basically, the little man from the draftboard in the classic 1945 animated short subject picture of “DRAFTEE DAFFY” is just one of the best examples I could dig up for time being.
Maude was the feminist version of Archie Bunker. Long live the memories of Bea Arthur/ Carroll O'Connor
I would have given anything to have seen Maude getting a lecture from Police Chief Bill Gillespie in an episode of “IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT”.
Maude was opposite of Archie Bunker.
elainegoad9777,
Have you possibly tried imagining the possibility of Maude facing off with Sheriff Elroy P. Lobo of Orly County from the two classic 1979-81 NBC adventure comedy series’ of both “BJ & THE BEAR” and “THE MISADVENTURES OF SHERIFF LOBO”?
@@elainegoad9777 Maude and Archie both loved Edith immensely. The feelings were mutual. Edith was kind of the middle ground between the two opposing characters.
@doody244,
Does the same thing apply to Edith in her efforts to Archie and Mike from arguing, by saying, “You know what I think??? I think we ought to eat!!!”
Isn’t it weird? that we are living through this in 2024!!!
When you stop teaching history, it repeats itself.
More or less.
Just keep in mind what it read on the sign of the gates of Jonestown:
“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
I think were living through the 1930s in Germany but..... I suppose this is the same.
I’m 🏳🌈 and ✡. Both groups have been persecuted for centuries. Yes progress has been made but there is still a long way to go.
Back when people could actually write dialogue. Loved Maude!
Possibly.
All episodes of Maude where always educational.
Not always.
For example, the episode “FLORIDA’S AFFAIR” in which a young furnace repairman is trying to seduce Florida instead of his job of fixing the furnace in the first place.
Some episodes were controversial.
If you're a purple-haired leftist it is.
You mean subverting. Which is what Jewish Norman Lear was good for.
In fact his whole tribe is well known for it
Strange?
He always looked more like a Lutheran to me.
Either this show was way ahead of its time or we in 2024 are way behind the time
Sometimes it’s much better to be behind the times than it is to be ahead of them.
The latter. Unfortunately, people are scared of change, and people different to themselves.
@daniellamcgee4251,
Just keep saying to yourself, “Archie Bunker was just a man of his personal limitations”.
We went backwards.
This was and still is my favorite sitcom. Bea Arthur was head and shoulders--literally and figuratively--above the rest. And social issues were dealt with regularly. I've watched each episode many times--it never gets old!
I liked the pilot episode best in which Maude blamed Archie for ruining Carol’s wedding, and Archie replied, “Well, that makes us even, Maude! Because you ruined my weekend!”
All in the family was also great and The Jefferson’s and Sanford and Son
@74artgrrl,
Do you think that maybe Aunt Esther would throw a scare into Deputy Barney Fife of Mayberry?
Who remembers what the “anti orange juice” reference is about??
Norman Lear was a genius. RIP.
To quote Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War at the time Abe Lincoln died, “Now, he belongs to the ages.”
Lol 😆🤣
Yeah hewas a their 2 rip
Just look up that historical fact.
Great Caesar’s Ghost!
It’s a shame they dont make tv shows like this today.
Blame it on the modern day followers of Karl Marx and Lenin.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u So we should blame the lack of modern day left wing message shows on the the left??????? Do you Conservatives have a brain or ever think about anything at all?? You are all so pathetic

Now it's reality....
Shows like this is one of the reasons why this society is so messed up...
"But you straight people have to live somewhere!" 🤣😆😂
Just the kind of a response one gets from a kook who makes the Addams Family look normal.
The Family gathered together to watch Maude every week, back in the days. Watching this episode, I realize how utterly hilarious it was.
@ArmenianBishop,
How would you possibly describe a verbal confrontation between Maude and Kate Lawrence of the 1976-80 ABC soap opera series titled “family”?
Really ahead of it's time.
Sounds like Mike telling us that a hundred years ago, Archie would have been a hundred years behind the times.
It's social engineering
Good grief.
Not really.
Depends on the circumstances of the dilemma at the time.
The second-to-the-last scene of this episode is PRICELESS!!
Great Caesar’s Ghost!
❤ hearing Donny Hathaway sing Maude's theme song!!! 😉
There’s a full length version sung by Sammy Davis, Jr., on CZcams.
Feel free to check it out.
I loved Hathaway's duets with Roberta Flack.
A lot of folks on eBay are trying unload their vinyl 45RPMS onto just about any pigeons out there.
And that Hammond organ.
If only it had also been used when recording the theme song from “BJ & THE BEAR”.
I miss the old days of these great shows 😢
Can anyone possibly imagine how it would look if Maude met Philip Drummond and then realized that he and Arthur Harmon are biological 1ST Cousins?!
@@PinkMoonOracle it's sad now there is hardly any great comedy shows on at all anymore. I really liked the new John cryer show on NBC last year , and , they didn't give it a chance to make it.
@user-wn5uz6gt9v,
Try imagining the possibility of a verbal confrontation between Maude and Sheriff Bertram Cunningham of Bowlen County, Georgia, from the classic 1979-81 NBC action adventure comedy series “BJ & THE BEAR” in its episode titled “GASOHOL”?
@@user-wn5uz6gt9v I noticed that they are cutting great shows quite a bit. Streaming networks are guilty of this too, it suck’s. Everything seems to be on Tubi, so I am there a lot 😊✨
Great to see this episode after all the years. Still terrific.
I remember when this episode aired. I was 11 years old at the time. I found it quite educational.
So far so good.
I wish Maude would move next door to the Alito's!
Yes! 100%
Egads.
Maude needs a debate with Texas propane salesman Hank Hill!
🤗
So far so good.
Boy, Mr. Drummond was an uptight so & so on this show! WOW! And I had forgotten that Blanche was on this show! Been years since I've seen this.
Conrad Bain and Rue McClanahan, respectively. They have real names, :-)

Most intriguing.
Probably looked more like your uncle 😅😅
Gadzooks!
To quote good old Charlie Brown of the Peanuts Gang, “Good grief.”
Ha! she looks just like MY Aunt Sondra, maybe we're cousins
He felt so guilty that he adopted some black kids after that...
@0U812FU,
You have obviously gotten Dr. Arthur Harmon mixed up with his maternal 1ST Cousin Philip Drummond.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u I hate to sound naive because this is the internet and all, but is this canon? If so, this would blow my mind!
@ficialintelligence1869,
Have you possibly ever watched the movie “THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE”?
Depends on the circumstances of the dilemma.
The comedy writing in this is top tier funny while at same time the message is radically on-point, effective and ahead of its time. 🙌🏼🏳️🌈 Right on, Maude!
Gadzooks!
Definitely.
Amazing that this is so relevant today.
Good grief.
Infuriating that it's so relevant today; positive change is so glacial in the U.S.🙄
Good grief.
The man Maude and Arthur speak to in the bar is the pyromaniac Dorothy speaks to at Rose’s job.
He’s also Max Roca, the head of the bookmaking racket which is financially bleeding the town of New Campton in the Tri-State area of Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana in the classic 1979 Disney movie “THE NORTH AVENUE IRREGULARS”.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u You're thinking of the Bartender who is the character actor Frank Campanella, he also appeared to two other Maude episodes along with appearing in lots of movies , and T.V. episodes including being a bartender in the original Mel Brooks movie "The Producers".
That’s right! I thought he looked familiar.
Right! I thing its the Episode where ask Dorothy did she have a match? LOL
I know that already!
I wonder if Walter's headstone has the inscription GOD GOT HIM FOR THAT.
Since Maude passed away before Walter, I wouldn’t count on the inscription in question being there at all.
My Mom used to say that to me all the time. Thinking now she got it from Maude 😂
In Maude’s philosophy, the marriage of Archie and Edith is life that old time Vaudeville type circus act of two people in the horse costume; there’s the front end of the horse, and then there’s Archie!
' they are human beings. we. Exist. '😂🎉🎉🎉
Good grief.
in 2024 they should be playing episodes like this on a loop on every channel especially fox, we need a wake up call in america
Exactly.
Really? You really think that this episode is not a bit over the top?
Wow! First 10 minutes of the show & Maude is sitting for practically all her scenes. Unusual. 🤔Loved her banter with any & everyone who came through her door. Wish we could’ve gotten one more crossover with Archie before either show was cancelled.
Bravo! I haven't seen an episode of this show for many years, and I forgot how good it was...
Now that’s the spirit.
I love Maude ! So happy it’s on livestream
Me too. Bea Arthur felt this way in her true life.🎉 I feel different to some extent.
Bea actually said that she did not have a whole lot in common with Maude
Good grief.
Egads.
And then there was Maude, standing up for us. ❤❤❤
Goodnight nurse!
CBS had the best shows! Love u Maude
Who wouldn’t want to see Maude in San Diego hiring the private detective agency of Simon & Simon to solve a mystery?
Maude was a Freedom Rider! ❤
And probably took part in the desegregation of bus stop lunch counters in the southeastern United States in the early 1960s, too.
this is all the more funnier considering its Mr. Drummond. And I always loved those 4th wall breaking looks he'd give to the camera from time to time when shocked or outraged LOL
What’s wrong with the possibility of Drummond and Arthur being 1ST Cousins to one another?
It's Donny Hathaway singing that theme for me!
I didn't know that.😊
If only Sammy had performed at The Boar’s 🐗 Nest in Hazzard County?!
The orange juice joke was genius! 🤣
Any bartender who says that you can’t have orange juice without Vodka added to it isn’t thinking very clearly.
Mr. Duncan: "Howie I'll have the usual."
Talk about odd friendships.
Watching this and I think wow they were ahead of their time. However, with further reflection, maybe we are currently behind the times..
Well said. I think we are currently behind.
@sharonkutz8272,
How would you possibly describe how Maude feels when the car has broken down, and Walter, Arthur, and Vivian have accepted the offer of a ride in the General Lee with Bo and Luke Duke?
If somehow you never imagined Mr. Duncan would show up at that bar by the end of the episode, well, you don’t watch enough television.
With the kind of breakdowns in my household, you’re correct.
Come on, spoilers.
@windsofmarchperrytr2823,
How well do you remember the classic 1979-81 NBC action adventure comedy series titled “BJ & THE BEAR”?
If yes, then how would you possibly describe a verbal confrontation between Maude and Captain John Sebastian Cain the Sheriff of Bishop County, Georgia?
my only shock is they resisted hiring a handsome, leading man type to play him and go all in on what a ladies' man he must be. But yeah, definitely saw it coming a mile away.
@GaryRPeters,
I get the idea.
This was a really lovely episode.

Can you possibly imagine how it would look if the character of Maude found herself in a verbal confrontation with Boss Hogg of Hazzard County?
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u i would have loved to seen that bahaha
Maude: “God will get you for that, Mr. Hogg!”
Funny on Maude, Conrad Bain was conservative and on Different Strokes he was very forward thinking.
Actually, I believe that the character of Philip Drummond was not so forward thinking, but rather he was more moderate under the circumstances of the dilemma in question.
It’s like he was playing different characters or something!
It is amazing to compare his work between the two shows. He was a excellent actor and SO FUNNY. His twin brother was in an Episode of Maude that was kinda funny but also a bit weird.
Through my oldest son’s theory of Amateur Genealogy 101, Philip Drummond and Dr. Arthur Harmon are indeed 1ST Cousins.
Definitely the makings of a Mel Brooks movie there.
