If it wasn't clear enough just from aesthetics, Yamato's wood style is an imperfect inheritance from the Hashirama cells that Orochimaru gave him, Yamato creates planks, boards and blocks, "dead" wood, artificial man made wood, which is symbolic of his power being artificial and man made because it was given to him.
Hashirama creates entire forests of living trees and plants, his style is practically "Plant" style, not wood style.
A simple building structure is nowhere near comparable to a vast forest of huge trees each the size of a building that Yamato could make.
Hashirama and Yamato's "wood" style are similar in name only.
