  • This is an informational overview video on Varenicline. Varenicline is available under several brandnames: Champix and Chantix. It is only available as a tablet.
    When to use it?
Varenicline can be used to support stoping smoking, by decreasing your craving for a cigarette.
And for those of you watching, planning to quit smoking, I have already made a more general video on “How to quit smoking”, that provides you with all the necessary tips and tricks! You can find it here: • Watch This Before You ...
    How to use it?
Swallow it tablet whole, with a glass of water. Do not chew on it or crush it.
And always take it at fixed times: preferably in the morning and in the evening. This lowers your chances on forgetting a dose.
    What is the correct dosage?
Starting dose: 0,5 mg 1x/day for 3 days:
Increase the dose to 0.5 mg 2×/day for 4 days:
Increase the dose to the maintenance dose, which is 1 mg 2 ×/day.
If you forget to take a dose, than skip it, and take the next tablet when you usually do so.
If you are looking for a video on nicotine substitutes, like the nicotine patches, check it out here:
    • How and When to Use Ni... .
If you are looking for a video on Bupropion, than check it out here:
    • How and When to use Bu...
    What are the side-effects?
    Very common (10% or more):
Nausea (29%), common cold, abnormal dreams, insomnia and headache.
    Common (1-10%):
Bronchitis, dry mouth, upset stomach, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, decreased appetite, weight gain, drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, arthralgia, muscle pain, back pain, toothache.
    Driving while using Varenicline:
Avoid driving your car the first days you start using varenicline. This is because you might experience some side effects like dizziness and fatigue, which do not exactly make driving very safe. The same is true every time your dose is increased.
Now after 1 week most people are used to the effects, and than it is safe again to drive.
    Pregnancy and Lactation:
Avoid varenicline, it is harmful for your baby.

I finally quit after almost 50 years of smoking. I tried many methods, hypnotism, the patch and finally Chantix. I would say it was way easier than I thought. A key for me is DO NOT buy any cigarettes thinking you can have one a day and be Ok. You will revert back to being a pack a day smoker in no time.

I had been smoking 20 cigarettes a day from many years and was unable to quit smoking due to the urge. Varenicline helped to stop the urge for smoking and I didn't experience any major side effect except a little sleepy for an hour after taking medicine. I m very happy and feel blessed as it helped me to come out of the smoking trap. I had already tried the nicotine patches and chewing gums but they didn't stop my smoking urge.

I started taking Champix 7 weeks ago. Since 5 weeks I don’t smoke (after 30 years heavily smoking, I made it!). I tried everything before, but nothing worked. With Champix I still have cravings but because I don’t get the kick out the cigarette, it was easy to stop. I had strange dreams in the beginning but not anymore. No other side effect though. Maybe what is important, I tried to get rid of situations that would trigger a relapse. Today people can smoke next to me and I don’t care.

My biggest issue was worrying about the full quit date, but when it came it was a lot easier to full stop then I was expecting. Don't get me wrong tho I'm still struggling with cravings countless times a day, but every day gets a little easier. Also not having cigarettes around on and after the quit date makes things easier.

Champix worked for me. Always eat loads when you take it or you'll get horrible nausea. I used champix to cheat that horrible 3 day withdrawel, then I tapered off the dose over a week. Doctors advise taking the whole course for 12 weeks but I'm under the thinking that those "nicotine receptors" in your brain are used for other things too. Therefore, I'd rather keep hold of them. We don't understand the brain and most drugs are a sledge hammer trying to thread a needle, hence all of the side effects. Champix is a miracle treatment in the sense that it works, but taking the full course, that's gotta do some damage so only do it if you tried tapering off and failed. Even one failure is worth another attempt, you need will power for this too.

How much water is a half glass, glasses come in all sizes.
Given that, a small glass might be half the size of a glass twice it's size.
So how much water and does it really matter.
I would think a mouth full of water would be plenty.

      Hi Mary,
Good that you are quiting! The body immediately starts craving nicotine and that is where Champix comes in. It helps to lower the craving gently.

no you just have less cravings but as I commented above this was my experience and I may have took it to long. I had bad reaction to Chantix after 4 weeks of using it. Every time I used any nicotine it felt like my throat was closing up almost like the numbing spray for soar throat makes it hard to swallow. Never did fully close up but, even 5 months later after stopping using it randomly if I smoked or used a vape the sensation would come back. Lasted about anywhere from 2 to 8 hours. And they had a class action law suit against them over it having cancer causing agents in it. So just be carful. suicidal thoughts, attempts and unfortunately for ever sleep have happened as well.

Ok wait....how do you wean off Chantix? Lets say you're taking it for 8 weeks or the full 12. You feel great, the urge to smoke has stopped. ( You are also changing your habits and routines associated with smoking during this time.)
But do you just stop taking the medication, cold tutkey? Or is there a wean off procedure or time frame to a smaller dose? You are building up the dosage to start to get to maintenance dosage twice a day and then you just decide to stop taking the medication one morning, like ok thats enough?

Hey Officer MIZ, good question. Varenicline is used to treat a nicotine addition. Therefore it mainly prescribed to help people quit smoking. However, as tobacco also contains nicotine, I guess it will also work for chewing tobacco.
However, to make sure I would advice you to contact your doctor to ask for personal advice.
