  • What is Advent? It’s the season when we look back to Christ’s first coming, as a baby born in Bethlehem, and look forward to his second coming when he will return to renew and redeem every part of fallen creation. The advent season is therefore a time to reflect upon the promises of God and to anticipate the fulfillment of those promises. It is a time for remembering and rejoicing.

Yay! I started to memorize Matthew a few years ago and stopped dead in my tracks at the genealogy because having to absorb every single name and line of it blew my mind (in a good way). I realized some things said here as well as the fact that basically this genealogy summarizes the entire Old Testament and caps it off which is of course what Jesus does with his life and teachings: caps off and fulfills the OT. Every single person listed in this genealogy has a developed story in the Old testament and you can basically recite the Old Testament off this outline of Jesus's genealogy. Brilliant! By summarizing the OT before starting the New Testament Matthew was basically saying to the Jews, Jesus is one of us, confirms and speaks to everything or ancestors taught and continues it. Proof He's the Messiah.

According to Rom. 1.3 and the Davidic Covenant Jesus had to be from David's body (mim me e ka)-2Sam. 7.12. When reading the 3rd chapter of Luke (the genealogy), its important to remember the previous two chapters-who was it speaking about? This is Mary's brother's genealogy usually, but, since Mary was a virgin and not yet married, it was her lineage also.
Luke was in Palestine while Paul was imprisoned for more than two years (Acts 24-26). Luke's source for the infancy account had be from only one possible source who knew Elisabeth's song and her (Mary) magnificant. There is no question Paul believed (from Rom. 1.3) that Luke wrote down Mary's genealogy.

Am I missing something? Three sets of 14 generations doesn’t result in 7x7 generations. Aren’t there 7 generations missing somewhere?

  • @charlottesturm713

May I pick that up that with making mistakes. What I have been taught is that Luke’s genealogy is that of Josef, and that of Mathews is that of Mary’s with a mistake in it that in Verse 16: … Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. That word “husband" in the original language does not mean solely husband but male relative. It can also be the father, uncle, brother…
And that would make sense because of the different names given in Mathew and Luke’s genealogy.
And it fits the 14 generation thing. As if this Josef is Mary’s husband there will be only 13 generations till Jesus, but if it is Mary’s father then there will be 14 generations, Jesus making the 14. -count it.
    Much love!

  • @sanelatutaris15
    @sanelatutaris15 Před rokem

This is NOT CORRECT explanation for the main differences. Matthew’s genealogy is of Joseph and Luke’s of Mary. In paternal line there is SOLOMON and in maternal line is NATHAN.

    Hello

  • @qw2ps4
    @qw2ps4 Před 2 lety +1

In order to find out if we believe in Jesus we must believe His word is truth.
His word is first, not the apostles, not Paul and not your pastor or priest!
We need to read the words of our Messiah and use THEM as the standard.
In that remember Jesus also said: Do """"ALL""""" that Moses said. Matthew 23:1-3
In John 5:47 Jesus says "But if you dont believe in Moses writings, how will you believe in His!
In Luke 16:31 "" If they dont listen to Moses & the prophets, they won't listen if someone rises from the dead""
Gee I wonder do you who rose from the dead that He was talking about?
It comes down to this; if you dont accept Moses writings, or the prophets, you won't accept what Jesus says.
Jesus ""never contradicted the Father therefore He never contradicted what Moses wrote.
Jesus didn't start a new religion. If He did, the pharisees would've crucified Him for that!
Remember they found no fault in Him!!!
That means when they studied the writings of Moses there wasn't any contradiction with what He said and what the Father had Moses write down.
He didn't teach a new religion He came to show us "The Way" to walk out the old one.
Don't let Jesus say to you "" Depart from me you who practice lawlessness""
Instead believe His words """ If you love me keep my commandments""""
His commands are exactly the fathers commands.
These very commands that Moses wrote!

    From Matthew Ch1 vs 12:
12 After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, ------> 1st generation
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, ------> 2nd generation
13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,
    Abihud the father of Eliakim,
    Eliakim the father of Azor,
14 Azor the father of Zadok,
    Zadok the father of Akim,
    Akim the father of Elihud,
15 Elihud the father of Eleazar,
    Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob, ------> 11 generations
16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, ------> 12 generations
and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. ------> 13th generation
Am I counting these generations right to get 14 generations from Babylonian exile to Messiah?

The point is that sin, ugly & regrettable sin, isn't beyond Jesus' full & sweet forgivness. His cross conqueres sin & shame.
