Maynard's vocal intensity and tonal diversity is unmatched. He's able to pull of whispering, light humming and screaming in all in a single phrase.
In Schism, what really stands out to me is the vocal arranging. The parallel intervals within the harmonies and the ways the production utilizes "multiple Maynards" to create a sound that is truly unique to this song, yet altogether MJK. It's haunting and soothing at the same time :)
Let's dive deeper into the musical mind and voice of Maynard James Keenan with the isolated vocals to one of the most epic Tool songs ever recorded!
-Chris
maynard is a supreme creative with his voice. what a production.
Yea. They dont like the way lateralus sounds. Sounds way to digital. Thats why they did 10,000 days by tape then transfered it to digital. It really does sound too mechanical. But 10000 days sounds soooooo damn good.
Never realised how Medieval the verse of Schism sounded.
This vocal layering is pure masterclass in Performance, Production, and Writing.
Well I just heard a song for the first time that I have heard 10,000 times. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Chris knows the pieces fit.
I loooove when people dissect the musical genius of Tool. Thank you for spiraling out with me!!
Love the Maynard breakdowns he has such a amazing voice style and in production they know how to bring it out so much more thank you for this
Fun fact, for one of the Tool albums, Maynard just straight up hated the vocal booth because he hated the way the studio felt. Like "the ambience" or "vibe" so he just went to a completely different studio against the labels wishes hahahaha Hey he killed it tho!
That's cool... Ya, a discerning vocal force!
great analysis! one of my "handwarmer" songs^^
another vocalist I would recommend for a video is karnivool's ian kenny. many say he sounds like maynard but imo he is more deliberate during softer parts and also more versatile overall. songs that show his range: roquefort, simple boy, the refusal, fear of the sky.
Ian Kenny is on Maynard levels of unique. He just has such a distinctive voice
I love seeing more karnivool fans
Seeing them in April. Stoked.
Ian Kenny is the man
Ive recommended Ian to Chris for years
Love and gratitude 🖤. Maynard's style of singing is to use his voice as an instrument, wherever it fits best in a song. He can be subdued in the background, or he can deliver a powerful, in-your-face lead. And everything in between.
Thank you so much for walking through this Tool song ♥️ I love this one so much and it was so fun to watch. Thank you!! :)
Had this video on watch later since the day of release. I'm so glad I got to see it finally. You killed it
Awesome! More Maynard please! I’ve listened to this song for years but never really knew or heard it like this.
Taking the time to pop in a physical album and listen all the way through it is an irreplaceable experience! Kind of like Maynard’s vocals.
I haven't seen any comments on this guy's singing skills he has a great voice
Dude....thank you for this. Makes me appreciate these records so much more man.
Nice work! You do a really nice job examining and explaining "sound", and especially to Tool. Not an easy band to dissect. It s good to know there are other people out there that hears music the way I do. Great video! You definitely put in the work. Amen brother!
Looks like Christmas came early 👌🎄cheers Chris, looking forward to this one big time.
Happy holidays!
Wow dude this is bad ass! Straight up. Alot more goes into making music then people think. Keep em coming my dude!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Awwh MAN!!! This is AWESOME 🤩 🎵🎶!!!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Your production quality is top notch. Thank you for explaining with words and vocals. (Great voice btw)
At the end of this I'm off to watch your other videos ☺️
Nothing sounds like Vinyl and that's final.
This album sounds AMAZING on vinyl!!!!
Great as always Chris
Awesome video! I really like when you break down and recreate the actual voice both on camera and in the DAW.
Great Analysis on Maynard's isolated vocals, and production tips.
Wow! Just made my day with this one! Haven't even watched yet! Thanks Chris!!!!
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@chrisliepe It was incredible!! More Maynard! Do the discography lol
Love this! Great breakdown!
Looking at the vinyl / packaging of albums is HUGE. It helps visualize what the sound is leaning towards. Ever since digital music and streaming started, artwork felt so separated from the music. I try and make a point to look at the album art while listening so I can get a better idea of what the musicians are trying to accomplish thematically and it makes a huge difference, especially with understanding the different 'characters' the singer is trying to capture in their voice.
Duuuuuudddeee!!!! Great analysis! Super well done review. Extremely interesting and informative. Please cover more Tool songs!!!!!!
such a great breakdown!! thank you
Thanks I like your video analysis about this song. One of my favorite as a teen discovering rock for the first time!👍
I've heard this album on CD so many times, I bought the vinyl when I was a junior in high school. Didn't get to listen to it until I was a out 21 23 Years old, holy crap was like listening to it for the first time when I listened to it on vinyl. Made me kind of appreciate the format more.
Awesome stuff Chris thanks!
And also, Chris, I have met Slash, Eddie Money, Scott Wieland, Nuno Bettencourt, etc, in person due to my boyfriend's notoriety in playing directly with them. We saw Tool twice together and once apart. I have gotten pointers from some of the best of my TIME- especially since he now tours exclusively with Tesla and sometimes Buck Cherry and Puddle of Mud. My dream, as he and his current and former bands do NOT think is out of reach at all, is to sing harmonies or even a main verse or two with "anyone" as they have told me.
Awesome as always 🔥
Your channel is interesting and very helpful. Keep up the good work! 🤘🏻😃
Great analysis👏👏👏Great channel👍👍👍
I love your analysis
Beautiful! Thank You!
Wow,so many layers!
Tool and perfect circle are the only heavy rock and roll or alternative or whatever you want to call him band that is just as skilled as an orchestra
Danny Carey is a God. His polyrythms in pnuema are just beautiful
That was really cool
Very interesting. I love breaking down and analyzing vocal harmonies.
The way the vocals are layered make me think of some ancient chant. Sounds haunting and beautiful.
great analysis
I have that same record it’s so good and smooth thanks for the tips and lessons I appreciate you 🤘
This was awesome, Chris!
So awesome that he uses BVs to enhance his main vocal line so much.
Maybe have a look at Dan Tompkins from Tesseract!
Wow what an amazing vocal arrangement
was lucky enough to see Maynard once!
with A Perfect Circle, a long time ago..
Maan, what an awesome video, Chris! This is one of my favorite Tool songs, his vocals here are just amazing! I feel like he's telling a story and as he's telling it he gets angrier and angrier...and all those other vocal lines (soothing and a little melancholic at the same time) kinda merge together in one feeling by the end!
I'll try and record this one as a learning experience, I'm sure it'll be one hell of a lesson in singing, harmonizing and mixing! One request: can you make an analysis (maybe even with isolated vocals) on the band STARSET? I really like them, and I feel like they use so many different textures and mixing skills, it would be awesome to see it!
Thank you!
6:43 Great stuff! Always cool to see you demonstrate the vocals.
I suggest you'd cover System of a Down's "Lost in Hollywood" isolated vocals if possible. It has the same kind of "chord vocals" and some interesting back n' forth with Serj and Daron.
What I really love about his work on this track is that with each line he switches between having each syllable very separated and then blended together.
(Cri-ppl-ing-our communication)
Love your videos
Please Please please Could you do rosetta stoned by tool??
Man i love tool and meynard
their amazing
🤘🏽Been waiting for this🤘🏽
Thanks for another great look into what's going on here! Those really help me get an idea of what I 'should' be aiming for when singing myself, since you obviously never get a fully produced sound in a single take.
One Maynard tune I'd love to see you tear down is 3 Libras from A Perfect Circle's first album. It's a totally different vibe from his other stuff, but there's a ton of nuance in what he's doing there.
Thanks for being so thorough with your explanations. this actually made music theory in general easier for me to quantify. if that makes any sense,
I have that same Lateralus vinyl release. One of my prized possessions.
Omg.. this. Is beautiful. I need more tool. So either do Parabola or Pushit next please and thank you!!
Yesss dude, tool is my favorite
Awesome vid as always Chris! Your vids have been invaluable for me and I got your distortion course and course with Sotelo as well. Great stuff.
I was listening to the Tragically Hip yesterday and wanted to suggest a video for Gord Downie. He always sung with such a loose no strain but lots of use of the break kind of technique, might be good to do!
Ya, that's a great idea! So glad you are enjoying the courses!
Wow that "crippling our communication" is almost like a slight horn section. Beautifully done Chris! Thank you so much! Happy Xmas!
Thank you for explaining this.
My pleasure!
I'd like to see 'The Patient'. Everything Mayrnard does on this song makes me go "?????=/How?" How does someone choose to sing like this. Very Original.
Another killer vid Chris. Loved it!! I'll throw another vote for Coma by GnR. Axl has so much great stuff going on!
More Maynard, hurray! As an aside, I would really like to learn about constructing vocal melodies. Now that I have a better handle on technique, I feel that's my next obvious point of growth.
listening to tool made me f high, watching your voice analysis and listening to isolated voice of JM beamed me into another dimension.
haha
@@chrisliepe your voice comes real close to his, you should be careful using that power, haha
I do really enjoy your stuff, keep on the good work!
I'm recording choral/shamanic music at the moment where I do a lot of chord stacking, and this video gives me a couple of new ideas what to do in the future!
This is great
I could swear there was one more in "crippling our communication" that dives down on "ca-tion". And dives down further on "tion"
You should look at Trains by porcupine tree or any other song from them , they are alot more melodic of a prog band. Steven Wilson has very good mixed voice and makes beautiful songs. As someone who can't sing very well it's people like him who inspire me.
Nice video, loved it. I think that Maynard James Keenan also does a great job in a perfect circle's eat the elephant album.
In Learn To Swim, I go for as close as I can to his voice.
Brilliant
can't wait to watch this one! please do a vocal analysis of Hayley Williams and Shirley Manson. They are my favorite female vocalists.
Yesss I would love to see one on hayley
I know you probably have gotten this a million times but I'd love to see your analysis on Maynard in Ticks and Leeches!
Amazing! Thanks Chris.
Would love to see you explore Cedric Bixler-Zavala from the Mars Volta. Also, Luther Vandross’s performance at the 1988 NAACP image awards, ‘A House Is Not a Home’
Hey Chris, excellent breakdown here. Maynard is of course fantastic. I wonder if you'd be willing to do this for the APC sing Sleeping Beauty -- I find this to be the most challenging song in Maynard's catalog. It's not particularly high vocally, but the chorus lives at that vocal break point -- F4/F#4. The vowel shapes I think make it extra challenging -- all this on top of it being a fantastic song!
Thanks for what you do, Chris!
Awesome
Damn thought I was the only one using guitar chords to make my harmonies. Some come natural but it's good to have a reference so you can get your theory right and make the harmonies as tight as possible.
Even without the backing music and in melody/harmony, it feels like S.O. screaming at me😔
I went to Maynard’s store in Jerome the other day. I got Aenima and Lateralus in CD format. I got a APC shirt and a Puscifer mask.
Now your cookin'! 5 stars
Would you rather fight one angry maynard or a gang of little harmonious maymays?
I find it really hard for me to play the guitar and sing at the same time. I would love to see a video on how to go about singing and playing the guitar. Thanks!
As many times as I’ve heard this song, I never realized how many vocal layers he used. The way his voice sounds singular in the mix, but is layered with so many octaves on the acapella is quite interesting.
Makes me wonder how he pulls this off live?! I’ve always noticed he has a pretty lengthy set of vocal fx live…maybe he’s even using a harmonizer or something live in his vocal chain?
Unfortunately, he doesn't pull it off live. He still sounds amazing, but you can hear how much thinner it sounds live. Tool should bring back vocalists on tour just like Pink Floyd used to do.
He just does a close enough pitch manageable live
That was awesome. Could you kindly consider doing a vocal analysis of 10,000 days (Wings part 2) as it truly is an amazing song.
Can you please do Pillhead by The Plot In You? I’ve been dying to see a vocal coach/teacher to react. The way that band fits together musically is incredible. Everything seems so perfectly put together. And his voice is incredible, especially with how well he conveys emotion. It’s like you feel exactly what he is
I second this
Be good to drop in the odd comment around what notes they sing in certain places? Ie “ok so that was an C4 in chest voice etc “ But another great vid yet again!
I would love to see a Landon Tewers (The Plot In You) vocal analysis
2:19 aye I have that same vinyl! ✊🏻
do a video on lynn strait of snot he is a very aggressive vocalist that i enjoy very much and i would like it if you could do a video on him. thank you and happy christmas.
I enthusiastically second this.
Chris, funny but now I fry scream in the car on the daily haha. im about to get into a program soon. could you make on about Bradley novel from sublime?
Magnolia by “Strung Out” at least breaking down the /pre chorus/chorus 🙏🏻 Love your content!
Hey chris hopefully this isnt to late but could u do a "glaive" vocal analysis
Lamb of god released another disc with Wrath that was all isolated tracks for each song. Tool doing that for literally any of their albums would change the world.
Please do a similar analysis of Parabol/Parabola off the same album. It's fantastic.
Please, Chris.... Please....
Aerosmith's "What It Takes" is the only song i ever truly want to be able to sing.
So much good stuff in there.
Falsetto, Howls/Screams(Tyler Style), Good support and breathing and most important to me... The insane emotion put into the performance.
Hope you will consider it!
Maybe something from Five Finger Death Punch. Great video, I've been following you for a while. Awesome content always
Random comment, If there was 3 vocal exercises you could do everyday that wouldn’t take that long (as well as help maintain/improve your voice and vocal range) what would they be, and could you do a video on them? I don’t have a crazy amount of time in the day to work on my vocals.
I actually have 7 of them! :) And I have a free course that explains all 7 as well. It's called: 7 Highly Effective Vocal Exercises That Won't Annoy Your Neighbors. You can find it and enroll for free at www.mymusicalvoice.com. See you there!
