  • A bike ride following the Bourne stream from it's source at Alderney, Poole to where it flows into the sea at Bournemouth pier. I love local history, so as part of the journey I'm taking a look at the history behind places en route, including the Talbot sister's philanthropy.

Hello David - greetings from Poland
WOW! - that was a fantastic video. I've walked this route many a time. Your film brought back many many memories, for which I thank you. Wonderful use of your camera and drone - gave the journey a different prospective. Congratultions to Ross for the production. Loved it.

Hi there David, I really enjoyed the video, thanks! I grew up near Branksome Recreation Ground and back then (1970's) you could see where that branch of the stream entered a culvert under the western end of the recreation grounds and headed in the direction of Yarmouth Road/Coy Pond. I don't live in the area now to check if it still visible, for all I know it may have been covered up years ago....

I love in QLD Australia, fun fact there's a town here called Winton. Named after the home of the first postmaster (Winton Bournemouth).

The planned relief road was scuppered, not by 'lots of local opposition', but by a Nimby who lived near the proposed route illegally moving sand lizards (a protected species) from their natural home on Canford Heath and onto the Bourne Valley ... and then "finding" them and telling the council.

I think I know the nimby to which you refer. Lived on Bloxworth road. When they built the new Sainsburys and diverted Alder road, they had to move a patch of heathland to opposite the Doctors surgery complete with lizards. I always thought that was a bit unfortunate for the poor lizards who would rather not have been moved given the choice!
