This takes me back, I was 12 at the time. This would have been the days I started to get my own freedom to explore my home town on my own. A lovely trip down memory lane. Thanks for uploading, and I hope you have more to share in future. I wish more folk would record scenes of everyday life like this. It seems like nothing important at the time, but now looking back some 32 years later, everything has changed, and this is the only record we have of it, moving pictures and sound. Funny hearing the lads voice "its it going to be on the telly?" - the answer should have been "no lad, its going to be in the Internet, on a website called CZcams, and folk from all over the world can watch it when they want to, on a device in their pocket" - The kid could not have imagined. Brilliant! Thanks again.

Thanks for the video Rod. I’m too young to remember that you could drive through the square and weird to see buses driving up Old Christchurch Road! But shows you how great Bournemouth looked back in the day.

I used to be a lifeguard at the BIC swimming pool during this period, great times. The council double crossed the public by closing it. Part of the BIC being built was to have public amenities available including the Pool to give the locals something for their tax money. The presence of the Pool was the justification to tear down the old baths and build the ridiculous IMAX which failed hard.
The structure of the pool was never dismantled, underneath that seldom-used extra conference hall is a void where the pool and wave machines were

I remember it from a few years before this. Mid 70s. It was a classy place. The Royal Bath Hotel was one of the best hotels outside London at the time. The big swimming pool in the centre was still there then where they had The Aqua Show. I saw it twice. Some of the performers were incredibly beautiful and brilliant swimmers and divers. A magical experience. Saw Val Doonican at The Pavilion, where a little known magician called Paul Daniels was also on the bill. Fantastic times. And the sun shone every day.

Smashing video, thanks for sharing. I was 18 at the time. It's great to see all those now classic cars looking nearly new. Town centres were so much nicer then. Sadly, the nice people now shop in out of town retail parks, leaving the town centre in a downward spiral of beggars & drunks.

I've only lived in Bournemouth for 5 years, even now its a lovely place to be, but looking back it does look really nice. So many big seaside towns have been pedestrianized and expensive multistory/private parking replacing street parking. I cant help thinking that shopping centers and pedestrianization cause more long term damage than allowing cars and pedestrians to mix, wonder if there has been any studies on it ???

I lived in Christchurch from 82 to 87. My mum worked in Boscombe. That was a dump then. Full of unemployed Scousers. The rest of area was much nicer though than today. I think that Boscombe was a premonition of how Bournemouth would turn out.

Bournemouth had a lovely holiday feel about it, clean, calm & relaxed. Almost a Miami feel some said. Westover Road was classy & there was the Pavilion Theatre & Ballroom further down with top shows. Not far away is Sandbanks with all the yachts. I left in 1970. I daren`t go back if it`s as bad as people now say. Whatever happened to it?

Around 1982 the first drug rehab halfway house arrived in Boscombe and many more followed. The idea was they would get clean in a rehab somewhere, but instead of sending them back among their old friends in some inner city cesspit , they'd do a bit more time in sunny Boscombe. Of course, when they go back on the drugs they still prefer Boscombe and stay. And that's how Boscomber went from being a bit run down to the shameless cesspit it is today.

Bournemouth now consists of boarded up shops, homeless people and over priced parking places. Its in a sad state through years of neglect on the part of councilors. The roads are a state and you can't even see the road markings in some places. I'm hoping that now BPC councils have merged some money may be spent to bring this little sea side town back to life
