- Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan as well as a musician.
In today’s video, I reacted to Cyprus’s song for Eurovision 2024, ‘Liar’ by Silia Kapsis.
Unfortunately, I didn’t vibe too well with this one. I think Silia is so talented and beautiful, and has a great voice, but the overall production was too overproduced and contained too much brass. The ending felt short and unfinished.

Do NOT feel bad at all. KONTOPOULOS who Is the composer of the song was convicted for plagiarism in 2023 by the Greek Supreme Court. Furthermore, his song (LIAR) was rejected by Greece in 2023 and by Russia in 2021. So 5.5 is quite generous actually!
It was not rejected by Russia. It would have been in the Russian national final in 2022, but Russia got banned in 2022.

Looks like the entire video was shot in a resort hotel lobby. Clearly everything was done on the cheap. 5.5 was generous.
I used to live in Cyprus and if i remember right that resort was abandoned or really struggling due to financial issues back in 2010 - 2013 ( If its the one im thinking about cuz all resorts built around that time looked the same lmao ) and last time i heard from someone in that area it was still struggling to in 2020 so yeah i doubt it was very expensive to film this. That was probably her first time in Cyprus so its not like she has any personal connection to the country to pick a location herself
Turns out its a much worse hotel than the one I thought it was. Its called "City of Dreams Mediterranean" but its built in the middle of nowhere behind an industrial port area with the only interesting thing close by being the mall and costs 200$ a night. Its location is so bad I cant even use a gps to see how far it is from the nearest beach lmao

I was really looking forward to Cyprus throughout the selection season and when the song dropped I was not disappointed, this is a song that I feel could do amazing in the charts and in Malmo 🇨🇾🇨🇾🇨🇾
Honestly, I agree with you, this song doesn't do me. I reckon it's going to be getting a decent result tho, we are having lots of 90s upbeat songs, and this one just feels more modern and will appeal to those ones who are looking for a good song to dance.
It's 18th on the scoreboard app ahead of some vastly better entries (in my opinion), so it's serviceable, I guess. The production is definitely in-your-face. Can't really decide if that's a good or a bad thing, but I guess at the end of the day, I can safely say it's not one of my favorite songs this year. Though with that said, I'll still give it a listen from time to time, I think maybe because it's somehow evocative for me of late 90s/early 2000s girl pop that I unabashedly enjoy.
Unfortunately the lyrics take me out of this song immediately... rhyming "ooh la la" with "truth la la" and "align la la" is a huge no for me 🥲 But she's so young and I hope she does well!
I‘m happy to see lots of like minded people here! I also really have problems getting to that song. the chorus really is kinda alright but the buildup to it is so distracting and also the way to the next chorus makes it unremembered all over again 😬

@@andrelini it was written in 2021 for Russia then tried to be reused for Greece in 2023 but was rejected cuz the composer was convicted for plagiarism and it was now recycled again for Cyprus and sung by the lowest tier cheapest artist they could find stranded in Australia
@@Wakui It doesn't get any cheaper than that lol, it's a bit sad for Cyprus still wanting this song and artist to represent their country.
@@ThaGamingMisfit Apparently there was gonna be a national final but some fuckups happened with ERT threatening to withdraw greece from ESC2024 cuz CyBC wanted to host the national final with a different channel 💀 Bunch of manchilds nearing retirement being idiots

It feels like Cyprus are resting on their laurels, even though they peaked 6 years ago. It's a song that's done the rounds, and was ALMOST the Greek entry last year. I won't skip it, but I won't choose to listen to this at all. I have it as a 5, so no scandal there.

A bit disappointing that the demo of "Liar" had been passed around Eurovisionland for about 2 years until finally making it through.
It could have worked maybe in 2018-2019.

Excellent reaction (again)! It really explained to me why I couldn't get into the song when I couldn't find the reason myself.
To me, this feels like a single-use song: it has a lot of punchy wow factor the first time hearing it, but the more times I listen to it, the more it just feels overproduced.
I think y’all are underrating this song. I’m pretty confident that it won’t flop on the stage in Malmo. Hope it qualifies!

Yea Im not too much of a fan of Cyprus this year. Its not bad, but I agree that it feels like they are kinda trying to do so much to make it catchy that nothing ends up standing out well
I think they're counting too much on the teenagers voting for a 17 year old girl in a tiny latex bra singing oolala. Seems like I'm in the minorty who finds that fact a bit disturbing? But the song is done 1000x before and I can't see why Cyprus really wanted that song that didn't go through last year in Greece...I don't think your score is controversial, it's literally in the middle of the pack musically.

It seems rushed. Like they caught the producer on his way home and he quickly threw something together to get rid of them.
I also notice something a bit strange in this song, especially its structure: the chorus is very short, only three lines/rows (two main lines/rows and one ending line/row "'cause you're a liar"); I expected it to be five rows in total making it a bit more "proper", shrinking the second verse and the instrumental bridge.
I like this song even though it is fairly basic. I've predicted it to get the first semi-final going in May.

Ooh la la, truth la la. Genius. The chorus is catchy, but the dance break bit is painfully predictable now. I wouldn't turn it off, but I won't be voting for it either.

I dislike this entry.
It's the usual very generic, very bland girl power bop with a scantily dressed girl singing about a very generic nothing.
Last year's entry, on the other hand, was far from groundbreaking but Andrew Lambrou was a gifted vocalist who elevated his song so much as to bring it into my top ten.
It's just too generic for Cyprus! It won't stand out in the strong semi final 1!

I like her baggy jeans though. I find it amusing the way everyone's wearing baggy/wide-leg jeans these days, as if they were only just invented. I was wearing the huge ones 20 years ago, cos I'm OG, innit bruh LOL! (I've still got them ...)

Agree. This is overproduced, has no soul, the lyrics flow very strangely (and the 'la la's are so obviously filler), and it just sounds so truncated. I have it down in 34th lmao
This will stand out i think because the only similar songs to this in semi one is poland och Iceland and iceland wont qualiify so i think that this is going to be like 8th place in the semifinal
I agree. This song is not bad. Try really hard to give Britney Spears vibes, but in the end is just generic and not stand out.

I don't find it controversial, I think 5.5 is even too generous 😂 This would me a very mediocre song in any ESC edition, but in this one with so many other much better songs, it's actually a bad song, that's just how it is. People can still like it, there's room for anyone, but I don't feel it will qualify. For me personally it's the Poland of last year, if it qualifies it's only at expenses of songs that deserve it more

Weakest entry ever. This would end up low even in the Junior Eurovision.
So so disappointed after producing so many bops the past few years. This is just so weak lyrically, vocally, production wise, etc.
