    I've had wrinkle happen because I applied coats too long apart. It's always best to shoot a test panel exactly as intended on the project.

    Old man Fuller told me that he had put 7 coats of black lacquer and his boss was drunk and came along on Sunday and put a thick coat of enamel and ruined the whole paint job , The boss blamed him .

    Paused at 27 seconds...yes, paint in the auto industry for a few years professionally Decades ago, and Graffiti to a mid-high level again - Years Ago. I have been playing with my project trucks, and art loosely for a few now and with my brand new Sonoma swap on my S10- BANG...wrinkled up what was a gorgeous psint job (for everything it was and wasnt). Spent the next 3 weekend's carefully sanding out all the clear (pretty much) "sun curing in driveway" the whole time thru rain,etc. Sanded up to 2000 then back down to 600. 3 easy clear coats and its all fixed but on this level (A LOT) of wrinkles. Id never seen that reaction from (whatvim assuming is uncured/ HOW? DUNNO! 3 DAYS IN SUN ON BASE/Proper 400grit +prep wipes/tack before clear) but GEEEEZZZ. Now to watch yours lol. Ill edit my appreciation in here-> gotta watch it real quick as im sure im about to learn something😅😂
    Edit: yup, as i suspected. You just ill say re-TAUGHT, not re-mind lol *ded lol a TON of things. 1, unknown "prime i scuffed and ran with, i do recall a few coats "hasty" now, i also recall MUCHO temperature variance during a 2 day reprime over unknown factory prime and then base. I DID let the basd cure but i dont remember when i noticed the "ugh oh" it had to have been after a couple clears but after 2 corneal transplants and being a bit "absent" sometimes all i know is i created more work. Thanks for the lesson and i wish i had of watched this prior to still "knowing it all surely" haha. Great info, thsnks again!

    I did a small bondo repair and could see an annoying ring after applying single stage paint. So I attempted spraying several layers of paint to hide it and it improved to appearance. I let it cure for a few days and sprayed a bunch more coats over a 10 minute period and wrinkles soon appeared but only in the areas where I had bondo, all surrounding areas were fine even though they had the same amount of paint. I guess the bondo never bonded fully with the initial paint so when I added more days later it wrinkled but apparently the paint adhered enough to the non bondo areas.

    I really hate it when it happens. Especially when the project is almost done.

    Maybe use sealer or epoxy primer over the old paint first.

      I only do that when I hit filler or metal then I prime with epoxy. But usually dry coats work pretty well.

    Sometimes I reseal the trouble spots with fast reduced sealer

    yeah, I’ve done this before myself and I know what to do. I just came on here out of frustration to reassure myself of what I already knew a layered some coats on each other, too wet, using basecoat pearl white, which is a Three stage finish. I had a little mistake so I went back the next day wet sanded that mistake out and then I got another mistake in the form of wrinkles. I already had the idea to just let it dry and then wet sand it out and put on a very dry coat slowly on top, just where the wrinkle was, which is luckily, in a very small section.

    Hey Mike. Great video. My paint wrinkled almost two months after application. The whole fender wrinkled pretty bad, it had seen direct sun and below freezing temps and seemed fine. Then one day overnight it just wrinkled. Any idea why that happened? A few other spots near it did as well but most of the truck is fine.

    when i had that problem i used a produce called isolator
    it would create a barrier stopping that reaction happening was made by dulux here in aust
    not sure if its still avaliable

    Ive just repaired that kinda thing and i got it multiple times, light paint works yes but if you got a nice small metallic paint well it doesnt sit well when your metal is high so that works in limjted situations. And now ive tried to actually 2k primer the whole area, indeed very dry coats till i got the required build then two good semi coatsto close up everything around. Lucky enough and didnt react again. Now well see i bacseoat 😂

    Acetone is tricky stuff and at $20.00 liter here It's getting to expensive to even clean gear with. Manufacturers put stuff into acetone to keep the costs down and affordable so I doubt i'd consider it for reducing .

  • @ogreunderbridge5204
    @ogreunderbridge5204 Před 9 měsíci +1

    On the other hand, when and for what purpose Would you rather use acetone as a reducer instead of the prescribed ones ? So far I have made use of it as a paint stripper for 1K´s and surface cleaner/degreaser for 2K´s, glassfibers and bare metal.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  Před 9 měsíci

      I never use acetone for reducer. best to use fast reducer. it has stuff to stop the acetone from reacting with undercoats.

    Question ..I'm having the same problems..have done it three times ..would it be better to prime it first
    .it's a car door..

  • @markvietti
    @markvietti Před 2 lety +2

    Is it not the solvents that eat into the old finish to cause wrinkling. I thought adding more reducer would make it worst? I have always had more luck. spraying the base coat thicker.. and like you said slower .

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  Před 2 lety

      NO more reducer makes the finish dry faster. Thinner coats as well. It is the reducer and the paint combined that makes it wrinkle. If you try spraying paint with less reducer it dries too slow and wrinkles even more.

    If there is no chemical reaction, you can apply paint anyway you prefer. I spray it normally and comes out great I understand, applying slow is good trick if you have problem with surface you must remove problem and spray primer sand and paint wet coats looks amazing i do it all day long to perfection. It's all on preparation and skill level on stopping chemical reaction is do not apply product expect paint same day not good idea I have not seen video that explains simple steps or explain to wait 24-48 hrs then you should be good apply your paint thin coats minimum 2 to 3 coats let flash you will be very happy with my skill level i dont need a video i can explain it in 2 words 😀 🤲
