UGLY Paint Reactions - Paint Biting/Wrinkling Causes and Solutions

- So, even I come across painting problems once in a while. I was laying base coat on this tank and overdid it on an area, it came out too thick and I ended up getting some Paint Biting reactions.
Paint Biting is caused by some chemical reaction with some paint behind it. That’s what I’ll teach you on this week’s video, how to fix automotive paint reactions or paint biting.
What happened was, I laid 2K primer on the whole Harley Davidson gas tank project but on one area, I cut through to the blue paint that was originally on the tank. So we had a little bit of sanded blue paint and then 2K primer.
In order to fix it, I wet-sanded the area down with some 400-grit until smooth. You don’t have to lay primer on it again. Well, the right thing to do is to lay 2K primer but I want to teach you how to remedy the problem just by dusting the base coat on little by little to cover it.
That’s exactly why we had the paint biting problem. When you lay your paint on too thick, your thinners and your reducer, your paint starts to eat up and you get a chemical reaction.
It’s important that when you’re laying on your base coat, you have to be careful not to spray it on too heavy.

But it’s unavoidable…this is what happens sometimes when you’re working on a project, you know - sometimes you’re rushing a little and you just want to get it done, then you come across a problem like this.

It came out looking great! You won’t see any hint of the previous problems on the same area anymore. All I did was held the spray gun really close to the spot and then dusted it with the base coat. Little dusting, a lot of air, let it try bit by bit and see how it gets covered up little by little - that’s the trick!
What you don’t want to do is, just lay the paint on because it will end up with a chemical reaction again. So what you have to do is, just dust it little by little, then let dry, dust it again, let it dry…do it repeatedly.
When you got the whole area done then just coat it a little bit and then lay your clear coat.
Check out the finished product, it looks awesome! I used some pearls mixed to the clear and see how it shines under the light. The cool thing about pearls and flakes is, you can take an ordinary color and do some pretty amazing things with it. For this tank, I used Gold pearl on a Yellow and it turned it to be such a beautiful color! I also added a touch of some Silver micro sequins flake in it.
I didn’t even buff the paint job yet. I don’t think I’m going to have to. What I think I’ll do instead is, sand the thing down with 1200 or maybe 1500-grit and then put our Harley Davidson decal on. Then finish with two more coats of clear on it. That should do it.

Never heard of that term bitting? I always called it wrinkling to much paint as you said but dry time & weather temp plays big part of this as well to avoid wrinkling.

Good advice. I will try it tomorrow. That "dusting" sounds like a good trick. Having the cracks spread when I respray was exactly the problem I'm having.

Hi i love your vids great stuff. Question Im sorta new to painting and im only wanting to paint 1K paint due to Iso's in the 2K paint and i cant afford a air fed system. question is 1- is the Iso issue as big as people make out it is. Question 2- How do i go about sealing the car is there 1K epoxy sealers. any help would be great. Im finding on this new project with my cousins 1970's Triumph Stag someone has 2K epoxy sealed it and when im bogging it and go through to steel im useing a 1K primer and sometime its biteing......looking at your vid im laying it down to wet?

Some of the repairs are different paint which is reacting with the lacquer so after sanding and filling I will try to flash a number of very light undercoats leaving plenty of time to dry between coats. Hopefully a protective layer will build up and prevent the wrinkling when I apply the top coats. I have etch primer but will save that for the bare metal repairs.

Happened to me with Eastwood spray poly. I think i add to much acetone to thin it.

What about if it happeneds with the clear
Prob didn’t let it flash long enough or put the second coat on while other one was wet still.
This also happens if you use non 2k reducer.
Keep getting it in the same spot already sanded it like 20 times and keep getting it when priming it I’m a vip member witch video can help me with this problem
Same thing. Im doing set of aluminum rear lovers for mustang. Sanding done and primed. I have 3 or 4 spots keep doing same thing. Sand all down do it again this will be 3rd time lol.

Everytime you activated original basecoat you will get a decent amount still activated under the clear. sand and featheredge a lot more than wrinkled area you can see. today the easiest is to use UV primer and the problem is quickly solved.

I think you put a coat off bar coat down
Not to mention rubbing it with bare hands send oils down into work while its open. Never go gloveless past primer
So why did you not strip the gas tank down to bare metal in the first place? It's only a motorcycle gas tank not a whole car! You have 2k primer & base/clear coat. Why be so lazy & then run into problems with old paint chemical reactions?
Kronaphasia who tf takes the extra time to strip paint completely off if it’s still adhearing.OEM finishes are the strongest.hes keeping the the stronger stuff on by not taking it off.
Biting? Are you making up new terminology? Heard of wrinkling and heard of lifting and heard of maping but, biting...no such thing my friend. Been painting for over 30 years and have had every paint problem personally happen to me but, no biting. Please stop saying "biting" or we or going to have to make a drinking game out of this video and every time you say "biting" we have to drink. Thanks tho for your video's. Happy to see someone new in the business and learning this trade.
Biting, wrinkling, lifting ... same look. We’ve always called biting in Hawaii. I too have been painting since I was 15... 37 now. Not so new buddy. 🤙🏼
