4 huge REALITIES of BOAT LIFE - watch before you move on board!

  • Boat life is a constant mixture of ups and downs. It is not the highlight reel you see on CZcams: it is sometimes wet and lonely and stressful. And just because there are downsides, that doesn't negate the existence of all the upsides: there's a reason why we've sacrificed so much to live on a boat. But to assume that it's all sundowners and dolphins would be naive, and in this video I attempt to share some of the realities of boat life that you will undoubtedly experience once you move on board and begin cruising.

I have been living on a narrowboat alone for six months, that statement of the real journey is in your mind rings so true having anxiety and depression myself. I am in a better place now mentally but the underlying issues are not addressed by being on the boat alone but I have given myself more time to deal with and be in control of my head space. Godspeed and happy new year.

All that you have related is very true, you must have put a lot of thought into this vid. Currently I own a 43' cruising cat, and for the last 8 years I've been cruising in the Caribbean for 3 months of the year, and working the other 9, so I can kind of relate. One of my biggest problems is budget... invariably something always comes up that blows the plan out of the water, and I tend to spend more than average on berthing, hotels, dining at restaurants, and paying to have some of the drudgery work done. When the weather is nice with a fair wind from the right direction, and everything on the boat is turnkey, I can't think of a better way to spend my time, and I contemplate putting the house up for rent and cruising full time, however sometimes there are those days when I feel perhaps I should have my head examined.

  • @rabukan5842
    @rabukan5842 Před 4 lety +3

One of the most honest, thoughtful and informative videos on the real life of boat life. There is also the endless maintenance, the time spent on visas, etc. Many people now watch a CZcams channel, see a few hours touting the great things about boat life, and they don't know the reality until they're well into the stresses. If they are aware of the things you talked about, and they have plans for how to deal with these problems, sailing/boating is incredible. And not everyone needs to sail around the world. Just having a boat at a marina for a few years while learning to sail/motor, venturing further and further away can be a totally fulfilling lifestyle of boating. That eliminates many of the problems, but takes away much of the adventure/discover of new lands. Everything is a choice. Thanks for these beautiful, literary videos!

So far, my longest trips have only been up to a month, but hopefully next year it will be more like 5 or 6 months in the year, and work the rest, maybe in a different place to over-winter than usual. Your videos are well shot and very enjoyable, and your boat is gorgeous. I wish you many miles of happiness in her.

Thank you SO MUCH for this candid and honest video. We've been exploring the idea of boat life for quite some time now, once the kids are out of HS (2.5 years from this writing.) We knew the online videos were, as you said, "mostly highlight reels," but video accounts of some of the harder times cruisers have living on the water are significantly fewer in number.
Having ones like this to reference, are so invaluable for those of us in the process of making the decision. Kudos, and THANK YOU!

You’re such a thoughtful and articulate young lady. Mature and wise for your years. Well presented video and good advice. I’m a senior female and thinking seriously of becoming a live aboard, though I wouldn’t be able to travel as much as you. But choosing a lifestyle like living on a boat, or anything that may bring with it periods of isolation, you’d best know whether or not you enjoy your own company. And, as stated, you can’t run away from your demons. Reminds me of a wonderful book on meditation called “Wherever You Go, There You Are” - with the key point in the title!

Maya, for the most part, I truly believe that wisdom comes from experience, and for that to accumulate, it normally takes time,
Talent as opposed to ability I believe a is birth gift rather than a learned endeavor.
I have enjoyed all of your videos, to use a cliched phrase you project wisdom beyond your young age, you have obviously learned much along the way, yet I am of the opinion that most of you is the result of birth gifts.
Your physical beauty, your soothing voice, and your beautiful music are but a few of those gifts, your outlook on life, and your pleasant demeanor are enticing and captivating.

This might be the first youtube video I've commented on, but after getting a small 50 year old sailboat for free recently, and fixing her up to cruise my local waters, I've been having a lot of thoughts about living onboard (a larger boat). Not only has this video made me feel like I might be making the right choice by wanting to live onboard, but it's also put my working life into perspective too. I've spent the last 6 years sailing cruise ships as a junior deck officer, and the constant stress and anxiety used to really bother me. Your description of your own experiences has helped me to understand the feelings that I've had throughout my career so far. So thank you. For two reasons.

I haven’t watched the whole vid, just landed on it and saved it as I am constantly considering a boat. The very first thing that was discussed is probably.y my biggest concern. Loneliness. Fantastic that you are discussing this topic where so many don’t. Can’t wait to watch the whole thing.

Thank you so much! I'm doing a tiny boat, still trying to crack CZcams. These are really thoughtful and kind words, thanks so much. A very human film

Excellent advice. Sailing is an adventure and sometimes, another word for adventure is ordeal.

Well done, you managed to give a very realistic view on what to expect of the life on a sailboat. After living more than 5 years on board of my sailboat I can only advice people who are dreaming of this life to just go for it and make the best of it. Don’t be afraid of realising your dreams.

    FINALLY!
I've been watching sailing videos for about a year and a half now with the idea that I can learn something useful. With the exception of some maintenance tips and a little DIY motivation, nothing. Until now. I've seen a few people hint at some of the trials of life on the water, but your laying it out there. Thank you! Having only seen this one video of yours I'm hooked and am subscribing now in the hopes that you'll give me more jules for thought. I want all the information I can get. If this was a 1 off please think about doing more like it. Again - thank you. 😎

@@SailingMagicCarpet It was very helpful and you have quite a way with story telling. Its the transom of my 1982 Island Trader 38' Ketch Rig called
"Chop Sticks" ⛵🥢😎. She was built at a shipyard in Taiwan. She is a beauty. All teak below deck. I believe Hand carvings of bamboo plants on the head and Captains quarter's doors. I do a boat tour in episode 3 of my CZcams channel. Although my story telling leaves much to be desired. I Wish you 2 the best on your current project. She will be a beauty when u are finished. Love watching your channel but i am a bit behind on episodes...
      Trader Dave..😎⛵🥢
