  • Windows and doors are two of the main culprits for air leakage so it is vital to ensure a solid airtight seal in these areas. For this video, we have used Contega Solido SL plasterable airtight tape around the window frame. We demonstrate how to prime the surface, apply the tape and ensure you get a tight bond. Bosig Phonotherm structural insulation board was then fitted to the cill. This will mitigate thermal bridging.

Thanks for the video. I'm about to perform this step with contega SL. Is there anyway you might post up a video regarding air tightness from ceiling down to wall plate level? I believe mesh is used in this step to facilitate plastering.

Thanks for the feedback. We don't have a video of that detail unfortunately but will add it to the list. To answer your question, it is possible to use mesh here but Contega Solido SL is plasterable so it is easier to just tape the membrane to the wall and plaster over it.

How would I apply this if I am putting insulated plaster board around the window reveals? Would it go on top of this or underneath?

Level off the reveal (if masonry) with wet plaster and then apply the Contega Solido SL airtight tape to seal the window to the plastered reveal. Then plasterboard over.

Can this be done from outside or would it cause issues?

Hi @happyguycol. Sorry for the delay in this reply. Sealing from the outside is considered part of the weathertight detailing process. A similar tape can be used to resist water and wind infiltration between the wall and the window or door frame. The tape that is recommended for external use is called Contega Solido EXO, is black in colour and not to be confused with the internal white version shown in this clip. All of the other processes are identical. Hope that helps answer your query. Thanks.
