Today I tried my hand at creating rust effects similar to what the guys on the popular show "Vegas Rat Rods" use to make patina on nicely restored hot rods. I think it turned out pretty good considering it was my first try.

This is a 1:32 scale made by JADA toys, they are pretty cheap and found at Walmart. Cool to custom though. I wanted to try out some Vegas Rat Rod style painting before we tackle that big skip truck, I have plans for it...... Already a few people don't like the clear coat.. I wanted a Vegas Rat Rod style truck.. see pic -> welderup.com/pages/wagon-rod
Wish they had a long bed version. I'd love to recreate a small version of my real life truck
"Medium green" is the color its the exact color my truck is 😉
I think it looks awesome so far, can't wait to see the completed video.
In rust we trust! Great video as usual Jimmy!!
Little note aside, you can put some salt or baking soda for small cars to get the crusty rusty lovely effect. Saludos from Chile.
could you put a tiny amount of stripper around the wheel arches to make it blister up, then seal it with clear coat to look like the body is rusting away?
I absolutely love paint colors "builds" just like this to be done in real life. I mean a nice paint job looks good, but a rustic paint job looks even better.
Hands down best one yet ! But maybe flat clear
Yes
Nice to see you do a larger scale diecast model
Really reminding my of my grandfather's C-10 Custom stepside.
A truck like this pulled into the store's parking lot... man the hood was rusted... you really caught the effect!!
This is my favorite project by far!
Cool technique! That C10 is nice model! looking forward to the final result
great paint efx! Jimmys Garage FTW!!!
Salt. An Ontario car owner' worst nightmare. Excellent job as always!
Very retro patina. This is the in style today. Cool!!!!! Nice touch with the decals.
Joseph Deffendoll It sure doesn’t seem to be in style with this group of people. They wanna see an actual farm truck. 🤦♂️
In auto body we cover the stripped area with plastic to keep in gases from stripper to have a stronger and faster reaction, maybe see if it helps remove smaller flecks for minimal after clean, nice work!
Looks really good!
I like the clear coat the way you did it. You seemed so bummed about the comments in the 2nd video I had to come back and read some.
My opinion (worthless) is you're the artist on a world wide stage... not gonna please everyone. You're very talented and I'm enjoying binge watching your videos. And yes it is inspiring me to chop up a few of mine. Thank you
Super talented and entertaining! You could give us a run for our money in the full-size custom paint world. Keep up the great work brother.
Can't go wrong with a c10
Look into Chipping Fluid. It can make that go a bit easier. I personally like to blend methods with chipping fluid and some sanding.... Nice work Bro....
They have chipping fluid now….sweet !
The effect is great but the clear coat makes it look almost too shiny for a rust bucket.
That's the style now.
RobRealistic Thank you Rob! Finally someone who gets it!
@@DiecastResurrection it looks fantastic. I own a c10 so I get it. Great job.
Your clear job looks dead on, just as shiny as we paint the real deal. Shiny clear highlights the patina and makes the job look higher end.
Great work the rust effects really work and make the whole thing sweeter
As usually Awesome work. You captured that vegas rat rod effect 100%. I can't wait to see you do this on a 1:64 th scale
Looks great looks realistic ,,,👍🇺🇲 don't you think you should Have Left it flat I don't know about the shiny over Rust,,,,,,,,
Kevin Breaker That’s why it’s called a Las Vegas rat rod, they Sometimes clear coat over the rust.
Friggin love it! My Uncle had an old Chev that looked exactly like that... rust and all!
Great rusting techniques I need to use myself
Looks fantastic. Great technique
Love it! This is how a while ‘83 Silverado with rust effect. First brown and then white on top. Sanded the white to get my brown for rust and then sprayed matt clear coat 😎👍🏽
Hell yeah, awesome wirk, your number 1 as far as I'm concerned
You have a very good eye for what looks 'right' . I think you have captured that rust look perfectly. I would have done the signwriting in white and curved it a little but that's neither here nor there. Really looking forward to part two, this one's going to be good !
Awesome paint work! Dude you’re killin it
So beautiful i had a buddy ask me to do this on a hotwheel so im going to give it a shot for sure
Awesome work Jimmy ..
Can't wait for part deux
The '72 C-10 is my favorite truck. You've done a great job.
I really like this technique.
This model is PERFECT for this.
It looks soo real i cant wait for the 2nd video to this truck:)
Mate, your painting skills are amazing. This channel just keeps getting better and better. 👍
Nice job! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
I don't think I've ever seen a rusted truck with a clear coat finish on it before that aged naturally
gloriously crusty! love it!
I love the Chevy Truck and the paint job.
Nice ,very good job ,looking forward to the second part
Looks great, nice job on the weathering so far!...Bill
great weathing and detailing, once again your Blub#1 says "Good job!!!!"
Man, It's coming out great. Nice work.
Awesome job! Although I’m not too sold on the gloss clear coat. Love the channel by the way! Keep ‘em coming!
Looks awesome. Your best job yet imho 👍👍
Really like the teal color you created here! I think the truck looks best at 13:22 !
I wanted a Vegas Rat Rod style truck. I would have stopped if I actually wanted a dusty farm truck.
Can't wait for the 2nd part
You are the *KING OF CLEAR COAT* ... so much reflection in that!!! 18:31
Wow Really cool. love that paint job, it really does look great. maybe one thing i would have changed depending on what look, instead og gloss clear coat, maybe a nice matte finish too. but again just an awesome job and look.cant wait for part 2!!!!!
That is a very creative way to use some of them many colours of paint youve got.
Another great looking paint job!!!.....but you already know that:)
There's a small, two bay auto repair shop that my family goes to called Jimmy's Garage and the owner Jimmy drives an older pick-up truck...how weird, lol. As always, a great video!!
Please keep up the awesome job, love watching you, always makes my night
Great looking results if you ever do another those trucks in that color had a white roof just food for thought
I was expecting a white roof. Color is true.
Woweeeee!!awesome. Look at that mirror shine.awesome like always man
Bet that will look great on the 1/64's.
Looks realistic bro.... very nice!
BroShank Redemption!!!! that rust bucket paint is looking siccc, and you did classic C-10 coloring so you get a million extra points. I like seeing you can do weathering with out the powders and to me it looks just fantastic and when the clear coat dries it will be even better. Keep on Livin the dream Brohanus! Everybody remember to Like, share and comment on all the vids. Give a Hoot and don;t pollute..and whle you are doing that make sure to grab you some merch from zee Store!
I agree with you austin, I can't get that sealer to lay right. I'm also a noob at this.
Great idea for getting a rust look. I think it actually looked better before the last light brown touch up. I realize you were also trying to hit the bare metal spots too so it was a trade off. Still looks awesome.
What a fantastic video ... keep making more videos like this please 👍🏻
Looks awesome!
Looks awesome Bro!!!!!
Hmmmmmm....directional rust. AMAZING. Great vid as usual!!
Jimmy's runnin moonshine
Dude, that is beautiful.
Hey, that looks pretty good
Loving this vid weathering and choice of colors truck looking really good just not sure about the top coat. It looks really glossy unless it will dry to a matt finish. As a truck being out in all weathers wouldnt have such shine to it. Looking forward seeing part 2 how rest of the truck turns out.
Reminded me of my dad's truck. It was a 73 baby blue Ford and it rusted in pretty much those exact spots.
Do this on a 1:18 Porsche or VW and auction for big money, lol! Great work!
Love your vids, paint jobs and mods are great, cant help but think a satin/matt clear coat would have looked more realistic on this one though
Love the rust effects. Note the wiper blade arms should be silver and not black like the wiper blades. At this size just sand off the paint and good to go!
Wow very nice work
Awesome Job ....mat clear Or satin would look great to.
You are quit talented! Love it!
Thanks brother, just trying out some things hehe
First comment!! Really hyped to see more paint techniques!
May I also say I’d love to see a gasser build!!
I agree. You should make a Gasser. But something different from everyone else's. Maybe not even 1/64 scale so you can really bring out the details
what up doode! ive been seeing your uploads firing out! glad your doing well!
Thanks brother, been working hard! I worked on the paint for 6 hours on this one alone.
You should check out salt technique for weathering, or hairspray technique. Both are kind of similar to what you're doing here, but without the sanding
Cool stuff there
Looks great ! wish you rusted the top of the fenders on the bed. But it's beautiful!
Cool techniques.
If you add black and brown washes over the top of it all it really adds to the effect.
Dude, the truck looks amazing! I kind of want to do something like that myself now, but maybe do a door and a fender in a different paint color to make it look like parts were replaced at some point, but rust them a little less and in different degrees to make it seem like the parts were replaced at different times in the vehicles life.
That looks damn good! Awesome!
So last week I was im my local supermarked and bumped into some Hot Wheels, clueless and without reason I picked up a Hot Rod.
Yesterday I got back and bought a VW GTI and a 57 Chevy Hot Wheels.
Today I drilled out the Chevy rivits and I'm now sanding the body.
WHY ? I NEVER WANTED THIS HOBBY !
But here I am, sanding a toy car... ;-P
Nice result. I did a simulair job on a real car, chevy caprice wagon of 93. Before you sprayed the green, you could also done some white, gives a nice ground paint coming thru the base paint. I had that with the chevy, that had a baby blue base paint.
That´s really cool! Thanks for sharing :)
As the owner of a rusty c10, I approve. We'll done!
Ótimo trabalho 👏
Before you clear coated could you have lightly sanded your decals to weather them as well? Looks great either way. I do agree that a satin clear would have given it the spray painted in the garage/ shop truck look more so than high gloss. Nice job weathering.
I like direction you're goin
OLA AMIGO MUY BUEN ÓXIDO LA TÉCNICA DE LAS 3 PINTURAS FABULOSAS BUEN VIDEO FELICITACIONES 🖖🧐🤝💯
Don't forget the Mud and Hay in the Bed , Maybe crack in the Windshield to ? .....LOL
If you put vaseline where you want to remove paint it could make it easier to remove the color layer. It works on furniture. May be worth a shot to save that elbow grease!
DAMMMMMMN! man you are amazing looks really great.
Great look I only wish you would have shown what colors you mixed for the two rust colors like you did with the teal. I'm not a paint guru like you! Like which colors went into each one.
Yeah thats the one truck ive got left to add to my 1:18th scale castings is the 67-72 chevy well and 2 dodge trucks and itll be complete..... But you made it look sharp you do us proud
"Hey benny! I hope you brought you're wood screws! Cuz I'm gonna blow your doors completely off!" (Party at the moon tower) 😜
I love those redheads man
Absolutely awesome! Now you are going to need a bigger jimmy. lol
Check out turn it rust. He has some sweet rusting techniques. He uses iron oxide mixed in a thinned black paint and then sprays on a activator to start the rust process without rusting the car. I think he shows this process on the 62 Chevy fireball video and also the panel van videos.
Awesome job on the rust! Looking forward to seeing this finished.
Looks good but should of painted the roof white . Like the original 72 Chevy came
After I finished the green, I was like awe dammit I should have painted the roof white.. my thoughts exactly.
