For those who don't know
💜The Truth Untold - this is how they conceptualised the song: They created a very old and sad story called, 'La Città di Smeraldo' that takes place in a small town in Italy ( in the 16th Century -1500's).
The story's about an 'ugly' man who hid in an old castle alone, even though he was a gentle good person, because of his looks he received lots of hate & cruelty while growing up. He never opened his heart to anyone. Eventually if anyone tried to approach him, he covered his deformed face with a mask and hid in fear, ...So he became bitter and angry. His one happiness in life was to plant beautiful flowers in his walled off garden.
One night a woman appeared near the man's castle. She jumped over the garden fence and stole a flower. This angered the man at first. So he watched his garden all night. But when he fell asleep, the woman took another flower. This continued for several nights. The man pretended to be asleep and watched the woman steal a flower. He started becoming curious about the woman. He began waiting for her. Without realizing he started waiting for her to come and each day began to seem a little brighter.
Following after her one day he realized that she was selling the flowers that she stole from him to try to make a living. The man falling in love so desperately wanted to help the woman. But he was afraid she would be terrified by the way he looks if he approached her. He 'knew' she would never be able love his 'grotesque' appearance. He came to a conclusion that the only way he would be able to help her is to keep himself hidden and let her continue stealing flowers from his garden. The man decided to make a flower that doesn't exist on the planet. So that the woman could sell them at a expensive price. He began to create the flower in his castle.
After many unsuccessful attempts, the man created the most beautiful of all flowers (The Smeraldo Flower) and filled his garden with these beautiful flowers. But the woman stopped coming. No matter how long he waited she never came back to his garden. He eventually found out that the woman had starved to death before he could give her the flower that would have saved her. If only he had been brave enough to approach her😭
The smeraldo flower plays a part in the Bangtan Universe storyline, and you will see it in various MVs.
The Smeraldo flower symbolizes the sincerity that could not be delivered.
The moral of the story, as interpreted by BTS, is that people are entrapped in the depths of misery and darkness due to a lack of self-love and confidence. The protagonist would have probably felt much better, had he talked to her and confronted his fears and insecurities. In addition, another aspect is the way people are affected by childhood trauma and dysfunctional families. The man was highly affected by his childhood trauma caused by nasty comments made by people.

This is the first b-side song of BTS..that made literally bawl my eyes out when i first heard it! When i got into BTS and when i read the lyrics knowing the beautiful yet sad story (someone already explained it here ) behind the lyrics, it made me a crying mess.. that's when i knew, i was in this bangtan Sonyeondan sh*t for life😂💜

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. These boys are wonderful! This live performance was here in my country (Brazil). Our dear Jimin was sick, with a lot of sore throat, JK had to help him. At the end of this performance he cried because he thought he couldn't sing well, but ARMY helped him. In another show it was V's turn to be sick and once again the ARMY helped him. The story behind this song is beautiful. Once again the voices of these four angels make us go to heaven. I love BTS! I have to say I watch a lot of reactors reacting to our guys. Some become fans and some become ARMY. To me the difference is fans love them for their dancing and singing skills and appreciate their work. But ARMY loves them for who they are, not just what they do. Fans come and go. ARMY’s are in it for the long haul. I’d like everyone to become ARMY, but I realize that’s not realistic. And trying to explain to non-ARMY what it means and feels like to be ARMY is difficult to put into words. However, I do believe you are ARMY and you totally get it. Two heart-wrenching tear-jerker songs in a row?? I'm impressed that you were holding up at all! This is one of my go-to songs when I just feel a little down and need to cry. From the lyrics to the haunting vocals, it's just heartbreak in sound to me. This was actually one of the vocal line's hardest songs to get through on tour. Whenever their voices would be a little tired, this was the one they fought the most to get through. There were performances where Jimin and V couldn't sing (not at the same time, but it happened to both of them) and Army would sing for them. Jungkook also would sing with them if they asked. As for ft. Steve Aoki, he is one of the writers and producers of the song.

I don’t understand how anyone can listen to this and only acknowledge one of them. It makes no sense to me other that to be extremely biased or solo. All of them add something beautiful and unique and JK’s harmonizing must be acknowledged.

-In a village of northern Italy called ‘La Città di smeraldo’, there was a small secluded castle. In that castle lived a man with grotesque appearance. He was the love child of a duke from a powerful family in Florence. The duke fell in love with the daughter of his gardener and gave birth to this man. The mother of the man passed away from excessive bleeding after giving birth to him. The wife and children of the duke wanted to kill the man, so the duke sent the man away to let him escape.
The man hid himself in the old castle, lonely. probably, it was because of the hatred he received from birth and while he's growing up that he didn’t open his heart to anyone, he got angry and hid if someone tried to approach him. His only joy was growing flowers in his garden. But one day, a girl appeared near the man’s castle. The girl in ragged clothes lifted her heels, jumped over the garden fence and stole the flowers. The man got angry at first, he spent the whole night to guard the garden. But in his brief moment of sleepiness, the girl picked flowers again and ran away. It happened for several days, until one night the man pretended to fall asleep and watched the girl go. He was curious. Without realizing it, the man waited for the girl, and one day he followed her. He covered himself with a cloak and after following here the man discovered, the poor and weak girl was selling flowers for a living.
The man wanted to help the girl. He wanted to teach her every method of growing flowers he knew, he wanted to teach her how to grow beautiful flowers. But he couldn’t come forward to the girl. She would be scared of him, she wouldn’t love his grotesque appearance. In the end, the only thing he could do was to grow and take care of the flowers so she could keep coming to his garden. The man decided to make a special flower that doesn't exist in the world. He started to make a flower so that the girl could sell at an expensive price. The man shut himself in the castle to make the flower. After countless attempts, the man made a flower that never existed in the world, and filled his garden with that flower. But the girl was nowhere to be seen. No matter how much he waited, the girl wouldn’t come to his garden. The man grew concerned and went to the village with his face covered. But he discovered that the girl had already died.

Thank you so much! The truth untold is about how we want to love and be loved in return, but the speaker in the song can't get past his insecurities and self-loathing ("I'm so ugly and afraid") to allow the other person to see who really is. He wears a mask to try to be worthy of the other person's love, but he doesn't get the connection he's hoping for. by the time he's finally ready to take off the mask and meet the person he loves for real, the chance is gone. I think in the Korean poem this song is based on, the other person actually died before the speaker could meet her without the mask.

I saw the explanation of the story that someone already so beautifully described, so I won't go into that. Instead, I'll tell you about the genius marketing that BTS and Big Hit used to make this story known and why a lot of people think that it's a real legend. It actually is, since it's basically a Beauty and the Beast story but with a sad ending. According to the story BTS told, a florist named “Testesso” (Italian for “yourself”) planned to open a flower shop that specialized in the Smeraldo flowers. They actually created a blog on Naver for Testesso and the flower shop. Testesso was going to attend a lecture about the flowers but had the date wrong. He heard about a woman named Amare (“amare” means “love” in Italian, so "love yourself") who had found the location of the flowers from the legend. The Naver blog went into a lot of detail about the flowers and the story. They have also used the blog to let ARMY know when their next comeback will be, by updating the blog. If I remember correctly, the update the blog with a new opening date for the flower shop, which was actually the date of their next comeback. They were still doing that in 2020. There are other little Easter eggs for ARMY, like Amare posting online that she had found the flowers and her post was dated June 12, 2013, BTS' debut date. They posted a picture of Jin holding the flower a month before their comeback, too. And RM was the genius behind a lot of that.

i would suggest listening to the studio/lyric version before the live performance to add to the experience like it'd make more sense why they had the setting/vibe and of course to have a better understanding of the song. but overall loved your reaction as always. this is definitely a top 3 vocal line song and yes they're a very strong unit!
