    Today Marie is going to teach you how and when to harvest dill seeds. As a bonus, she will teach you the difference between dill seed and dill weed.
    I, love every season of the year for a different reason. Summer is my favorite season because it is in these months that the hustle and bustle of canning all sorts of yummy food takes place. This summer bounty and abundance keeps our family fed for the remaining seasons. Have I ever told you how much I love canning? My family loves all things pickled and one of our favorite things to can is dill pickles. We like to make our own brine rather than purchase ready-made dill pickle mixes at the store. To make this brine an essential ingredient in our dill pickle brine is DILL SEED. Have you gone to the grocery store and looked at the cost of those things? Needless to say, it is much less expensive to grow and harvest dill seed and dill weed from your own garden.

    Get brown paper grocery bags at the store, place our herbs and spices to dry in the bags. Catches all little seeds and the bag absorbs the moisture. This helps speed up the process. Don't over fill te smell is so fun Love ypu.

    Dill grows wild all the along the central to Northern California coast. It gets HUGE!! SO bushy and beautiful. Some of them 6ft tall/3ft wide. They're gorgeous 😍 we just did a little road trip last week and it was in the 70s.

      That is super fun. We have asparagus that grows wild around here and it is always a great thing to harvest.

      Are you sure that was dill? There are a few plants on the coast that mimic the appearance of dill: anise or licorice, queen anne's lace are two.

    This was definitely helpful because I had no idea what it looked like when it went to seed. I let my dill coda seed for the first time this year and it’s not quite ready. I think though, when I take it, I’m gonna put it in a brown paper lunch sack, like I do with my lavender and this way all the seeds will just fall in that bag

      That is a great idea. I remember being unsure of timing the first year I grew dill seed. That was the inspiration for this video. I'm glad it helped.

    Yay! Just what I was looking for. Excited to harvest as many seeds as possible this year and I love dill. Have also harvested sunflower seed, cucumber, even calendula seeds plus many more. Will definitely save me $ next year and I participate in seed swaps as well.

    I use a paper plate which I slice to the middle and I slip it on the stem. Then I can cut and I never lose a seed

    I didn't harvest my other seeds in time and they all kind of blew away and now I just have a couple of small ones that are producing these small seeds but I want to grow more dill. Can you plant the younger seeds(still green and small)?

    • @WisdomPreserved
      @WisdomPreserved  Před 11 měsíci

      I'm not sure how viable they would be but you could try it. But I'm not sure you will have to. With all the seeds you had blow away you are almost guaranteed to have volunteer dill plants later. The question is...where are they going to pop up.

    I put the mature dill heads in a paper bag to finish drying. Now I need to remove all those with stems the seeds grew on. Winnow? Any suggestions?

    • @WisdomPreserved
      @WisdomPreserved  Před rokem +1

      I usually cut the heads and leave them in the bowl for about 24 hours at this point they are dry but not brittle and I can usually take the seeds off pretty easily. If I let it get too dry the stems will break and it takes forever to get all the sticks out. After I remove the seeds I put them in the green house for a day or two and allow them to dry the rest of the way before jarring them up. If you had a mesh that was big enough for the seeds to go through maybe you could sift the seeds out of the stems. If you come up with a good solution, I would love to hear about it.

    So. When dill goes to flower is the rest of the plant still usable?

    • @WisdomPreserved
      @WisdomPreserved  Před rokem +1

      Yes, but the leaves tend to get less tender at this point.

    How do you dry, store weed and seeds? You mentioned you let the weed dry... ok... then what? Same with seeds. Do you use the seeds in cooking or only canning?

    • @WisdomPreserved
      @WisdomPreserved  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I dry the seeds in shallow dishes on the window sill. It usually only takes them a few days to dry fully. I then store them in an air tight container; often a mason jar. The dill seeds I use when making pickles or relish. The dill weed I use fresh in pickles, salads, with fish and sometimes chicken. I dry the dill weed on a dehydrator at 130 degrees. It takes 6-12 hours for it to be fully dry and then I crumble it into an airtight container and use it in much the same way as I do the fresh.
