Should have wet painted the covers. Powder coaters will shot blast them which creates heat and distortion. Wet paint gives you the option to fill any dents and dings, and is simpler to repair in the future too.

    • @cmarshall4559

    • @thechallengestradale
      @thechallengestradale Před 9 měsíci +14

Agreed 100%. Powder coating is great in some situations, but most of the time, paint looks much better and can be close to just as durable if done correctly.

Scott, this easily remains my favourite video series on CZcams. I've praised your dedication, skill, knowledge and expertise many times before, but it's so worth repeating. You really do amaze me with what you manage to achieve, and the end results are sooooo worth it! This build is inspirational to me. The BBi was always a stunner, but I have no doubts whatsoever that this particular one will be absolutely perfect when it's finished. Will it be on the road by the spring? Of course it will. Your work ethic is phenomenal and the deserved results will follow. I'm sorry that Owen has left, however I really hope you can find another trusted helper if you feel you need one. I only wish I lived nearer to you or I would be volunteering myself. Please keep your chin up, and please keep up the good work. Your fans adore you 🙂

But when I saw boxes and boxes of spare parts I thought it would never be finished. 😂 However, when I saw the video in which you assembled the car's CV joints and the driveshafts, I thought "I think he knew what he was doing from the beginning." Congratulations!

Scott, I’m here to tell you how glad I am that you do this. You were the first CZcamsr I proudly followed. I bought your swag shirts and sweaters for myself and my kids. The work you do and have done is unbelievable to me. I am not a diy car guy. I respect and am inspired by all that you do and have done. I’m here to say, if you don’t do another thing to the BBi or any of your cars, I would never think less of you at all. You have done more for Ferrari than any person on this planet as far as I’m concerned. You are an inspiration and I’m lucky to have been able to watch these videos. Coming together Scott. Get yourself to a local industrial estate which has a powder coaters/blasters etc. and have them do your stuff, they can put it in with their other work and takes days. For the black paint I’d just use vinyl wrap. For those tin covers they are cheaply made in the first place and will show every mark. Have someone make your something out of carbon or sheet metal. I’m on my second Landrover restoration and trying to keep everything original doesn’t always make sense, upgrades can look and operate better in some cases. Keep up the good work!

I have 100% faith you’ll have the BBI on the road by spring so long as you can work on it thru the winter. You’re already so far!!! As long as you don’t make perfection the enemy of progress. For the engine covers it would have been pretty easy to cast them out of carbon fiber and I think that would have been a quick fix that would have made a fantastic “look”

  • @nickpetty3035

I have been watching your build with interest, I am also rebuilding a 512bb and a couple of area's where I got caught out, firstly the alloy coolant tubes that run through the centre tube of the car, mine looked solid, however, when I ran the car up for the first time, I found a very small amount of water coming from the chassis tube they sit in, to replace those pipes is an engine out job, and new pipes are available at £237 each!!!! Second issue, my exhaust manifolds were a bit of a mess and like yours had been repaired, I bought new ones that were fabricated in the UK (I am in Spain), they looked fantastic and fit without an issue, however after the car had run for maybe a couple of hours still in my garage, smoke started coming from the right side of the motor, I shut in down and could see where the problem was, the pipes on the right rear manifold loop round the drive shaft and it had melted the new driveshaft boot and the grease had run onto the pipes below, on inspection, I noted that the heat shields that fit on the rear manifolds were not there, I am in the process of looking for some heat resistant boots - maybe silicone or GKN Aerodynamic, I am also going to fabricate some heat shields and fit heat tape to the offending pipes just to be on the safe side. I think even the factory original items are questionable, an owner posted on Ferrari chat that his 512 set on fire due to grease leaking from the c/v joint, I hope you find this helpful.

Nice progress Scott. On the engine covers, if you really want to powder coat them, I’ve had great results using JB WELD as a filler, then using polyester powder coat primer as a sandable primer to get rid of the jb welds feather edges that usually up after baking, then a final powder coat in the satin black. Prob been mentioned already, and I’m betting you and others already know this, but thought I’d throw it out there. Good luck!

For the exhaust a good shop should be able to remake the headers fairly easily since they're in good enough shape to use as a pattern. I'd get it all ceramic coated when ready to go back in. They can do it in light silver that will look close to stock.

Loving your series on this car Scott! I had a 512BB (carb, red with tan & black Daytona seats) from 2000 to 2005. Sure should have kept that car! It was $70K US back then. You're going to love driving this beast once it's done...fabulous car, did 2 track days with it. Now, I've got a 360 coupe (6 speed manual) and a 1950 Bentley Mark VI. FYI, I'm sure you've already tackled this, but in the video where you're talking about the tough time getting the brake booster in there, it looks like the bolt on the far right isn't tightened yet.

I would recommend Microkerf in Leicester - they would need a typically DXF file of the flat pattern to laser cut and fold - I am not sure if they could do the forming on the louvres, I think specialised tooling is typically used for this, but I suspect a skilled panel beater could do this by eye; and possibly sort out the dents in your engine cover....

I'm an ex sheet metal worker, I don't have the equipment plus I'm in Australia, but I would suggest that you find a sheet metal workshop that specialises in office furniture. Those vents are pretty much the same stuff on a locker door. Though you might not get exactly the original pattern as it's dependent on what dies they have. The rest of the sheet can be easily bent.

Ceramic coating on some of the exhaust parts would do very well! Increased life and lower temps. I agree with other comments regarding the powder coating. They should be sprayed 🤘 Well done with the project 👍

On the silencers, I suggest fine steel wool with Autosol. Should come up a treat. Keep em coming with the BBi content

For those sheet metal parts, I wonder if it would be possible to 3d print forms for them and either see if the existing pieces might be salvageable or if those forms could be used to just stamp some new parts.
There are a number of videos on using 3d prints as metal forms for small-scale parts so the question is if that could scale to these larger parts and be done affordably.

Much as I love this series and the dedication. I always find myself at odds with the process and preparation (these covers an example).. It always gives the impression of being very haphazard. It's a rare and valuable car, and whilst I appreciate the idea of working in the street and DIY some of the decisions seem at odds with repairing what is a valuable car. Even if it was actually in a garage it might help the impression 😁

For the panels you want remade, try Yorkshire Car Restorations. They're on YT and are rebuilding an old BM for Mat Watson. They're very skilled sheet metal workers.
