  • Hey Everyone!
    This new Latched Linear crimper by Milwaukee is awesome! The crimps really are much smoother and no more banana sleeves!!💯👌 If I had to choose though, I'd go with the linear Jaw type "O"/D3 head w/ cutter attachments... but who says ya can't have both!!😁
    I highly recommend this tool!
    Hope you all had a great weekend! 🍻👊

    This style inline crimper has been available from Panduit for quite a while as the CT3001. Where I used to work Building control panels we had several. As they use standard Burndy "W" style dies you should be able to use the Burndy W28K cutting die for up to 4/0.
    A warning if the head does not fully close an latch it may be possible to do significant damage to the latching parts. With the Panduit version we had that happen a few times and had to send the tool in for expensive repair. In an outdoor less clean environment I could see the latching parts accumulating dirt and not closing correctly.
    Lastly from a crimping terminology standpoint the burr you get on the sides of the crimp is called "flash".

    So what I was taught to prevent causing a banana is to do 2 squeezes on both sides of stopper, let out rigging so tension is on the splice, leave rigging lose in case she lets go. Then complete pressing the sleeve under tension. Works every time. No need to rotate the press.

    • @Bobsdecline
      @Bobsdecline  Před 10 měsíci +1

      That's pretty much what we do as well, unless splicing on the ground of course! It works pretty good if there's a lot of tension, we were tought 3 crimps and to leave the pullers attached but slack in case of a slip (which I've never seen)

      @@Bobsdecline yessir!!!! 336 Al sleeves don’t banana on us but we still press the same way. Smallest wire we have is 1/0 Al. They will definitely banana if you don’t press under tension

    If you apply pressure to the connector or lug in the opposite direction of the curve (banana) while it crimps. It will counter the curving.

    • @Bobsdecline
      @Bobsdecline  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes, for the most part! I mentioned at the beginning of the video we typically do 180° swaps as opposed to 90°. Works pretty good, but a pain if you're on hooks at full reach 😟

      @@Bobsdecline I’m sorry I didn’t hear you say that but yes pressing a barrel sleeve” out of a set of hooks”and rotating the press is a pain.We use an “automatic” for our neutral splices with a “ jumper wire” over the automatic especially 1/0 splices because on a service lateral there isn’t enough tension to make a good electrical connection.Enjoy your videos,don’t get to watch a lot of them so I’m not always up to date on all of them but good job 👍

    Have you ever looked into 687 dies for pressing 2 and 4 acsr sleeves? The dies are shaped a little offset and I experience far less banana effect from them and I don't have to rotate the sleeve/crimper.

  • @boomermatic6035
    @boomermatic6035 Před 10 měsíci

    my question would be, how much flexibility do you have in selecting the tools you use for that sort of thing? In other words, can/does your company or the industry mandate what tools you must use for certain tasks?
    It would seem like crimper that puts less bend and therefore less stress on a sleeve would get mandated to be the only tool you can use, unless of course it breaks down and then you fall back on the jaw type.

    I’ve been trying to get ahold of Milwaukee just to see if my m12 3/8” stubby could be use on energized lines. Our Hilti battery powered impacts work fine, they are just too big. I would like to use it to install false dead ends on energized phases. I emailed them, but haven’t heard back. I’m thinking it should be fine wearing rubber goods in an insulated bucket, you have any thoughts?

    • @Bobsdecline
      @Bobsdecline  Před 7 měsíci +2

      I inquired specifically about the crimper and their utility impact wrench and was told they could be used up 69kV without any issues.
      We have many versions of their impact wrenches and use all of them on live 12.47kV system without issues.
      I've never tried the M12 but
      a couple viewers mentioned if the tools were brushless, they'd be ok.
      Keep n mind, (as you mentioned) this is while in an approved insulated bucket and without putting tools in series of course. The tools themselves are not insulated for high voltage

    Great Vid Aaron! Can U do a video of the Strand cutter that RED has? IM curious of its performance on anything 6.6 m strand thru 16M Strand If they have one that can Cut 16m as rare as it is. . I know ACSR is the Majority of what you guys cut and splice but Surely your down guys are Just steel strand. 6. 6.6m thru 10 is mostly what we Use for our telecom South of You as a messenger and Anchoring our VZ poles. Tho the occassional 16m In the mountains is very common. Itd be awesome to see if you can demo basically Milwaukke bolt cutters.!! Thanks Bud. Also on top of that do U guys have bundled primary for 34kv ? I always wonder how U guys lash that stuff since its Such a big Bundle of 3 cables and Most power Guys dont have Roving or mobile trucks as we do when placeing and or lashing Our Stuff. Hoe U understand that cause not sure how or what telecom does Up your side of the border. Thanks Broski. Jeff C..

      @@Bobsdecline I can fully grasp what your saying.
      I worked for National Grid in the UK many years ago, mainly substation work. I too hated the early morning emergency callouts. But yeah it is satisfying when you get homes back online after a power outage.
      For some reason your type of work appeals to me more, but too old now to start again.
      If I could do it all again, I would defiantly emigrate to the USA and train to become a linesman there.
