But then I played her quest, its clear she wants people to move on with no regrets (even taking a job herself to do the same XD). I understand why people dislike her, shes easy to misunderstand, but seeing how she went out of her way to make the fake ghost, made it clear she cared about people more than just business opportunities. She doesn't see death as anything scary, and once you realize that, you realize she just wants you to experience it as a good experience. In conclusion, Hu tao is my favorite characters and I hope the other characters get to realize how cool she is XD
4:14 Wicker, bamboo, wood, and marble are materials used to make coffins. Wicker coffins are known to be one of the cheapest, wood is average, and marble (mausoleum) is super expensive. She gauges her clients' importance based on how much theyre willing to pay for their burial. It's pretty funny lol

It’s kind of refreshing as most of the other characters in Liyue are serious such as Xiao and Zhongli. It’s a nice change of pace (also YAHOOOO is so cute)

Hu Tao is a great charachter imo. She jokes and has dark humour, but she truly respects the boundry between Life and Death. She is also dedicated to this duty. This is why she tries to provide the best to give the best Funerals.
After seeing this side quest I strongly headcanon Hu Tao as autistic. Watching her on screen made me feel like I was looking at myself, with the witty dark humour, and the constant misunderstandings from other people (that decomposing one liner was gold I don’t care what anyone says). I really relate to her whole “death is natural and shouldn’t be feared” thing and initially couldn’t figure out why everyone was so off put by her even though she was telling the truth. She is now one of my favourite characters in the whole game and I can’t wait to see more of her.

the chinese taboo surrounding death is still quite heavy; in formal settings, few of us wear black suits/ties for that reason, and we stay away from mentioning the word "death" or anything that sounds like it (the euphemisms for death and such are all part of hutao's vocabulary in the trailers...) and we often omit the 4th floor and subsequent ones in buildings (14, 24, etc... more superstitious people will also omit the 13th) therefore hutao is basically violating a huge taboo left and right with what seems like impunity in chinese, thus explaining why liyue characters are far more taken aback by it than western audiences would be
that's interesting to know! I noticed that liyue had a much more 'death is taboo' view versus mondstadt folk (who basically tie death to the winds and Barbatos by extension, so I assume the idea of being ferried by their god to the afterlife is a lot more comforting than the "black empty abyss" idea one of the ghosts in the border mentions being afraid of), which made me curious to know if it was another chinese influence to the nation or not. When I played Hu Tao's story quest I felt like she was desperate for something, it made me kind of sad, I feel like she is trying to make her previous directors proud or she is trying to maintain the organization. I just feel sad for her
Well its not that she's desperate for something but more like She decided to be very happy go lucky ever since she was able to travel through the otherside. Eversince her grandfather died she had the feeling and job to put his spirit at rest (which she eventually did) then lived by the moto "Live life by its fullest" since she too now knows time waits for no man. The hat she also wears is from her grandfather which she refitted alot of time just so she could wear it. Needless to say she values her grandpa alot and now takes over whatever he did when he was at the wangshen funeral parlor which she takes of utmost importance.
Definitely got that sense as well. I believe the implication is that her grandfather intentionally sheltered her from the outside world (possibly due to her ability to see and interact with the dead) and now that he is gone she's craving connections with other people, but doesn't really know how to do that outside of the funeral parlour business. So she's doing all this crazy stuff to promote the parlour both in order to stay in business and finally get outside a bit and talk to people, not realising how off putting her relaxed attitude towards death is to most regular people, because to her that's just business as usual.

People said that Venti's story is the most sad/depressing story when Hutao is also more sad/depressing Dark jokes aside, I always see Hutao as someone who cracks a joke no matter how dark it is not just because of her personality, but also because she doesn't want to consider her job as something sad and wanted to be positive about it Think about it, if you work in a funeral service, everyday will be filled with sadness whenever a customer come bcz you knew someone died.
Yup, the notion of death is sad anyway but it doesnt mean you should drag everyone in it. Heck, what Hu Tao is doing exist irl. Most people book their funeral (not the date tho oh god lol), want custom coffins or wanting to be buried next to their families so I dont feel much errors in her marketing
Late but with family in the field there's definitely a black comedy reserved for emergency responders to cope with how dark their jobs are. Helps keep them going, though obviously they don't usually make them in front of normal people.

the chinese taboo surrounding death is still quite heavy; in formal settings, few of us wear black suits/ties for that reason, and we stay away from mentioning the word "death" or anything that sounds like it (the euphemisms for death and such are all part of hutao's vocabulary in the trailers...) and we often omit the 4th floor and subsequent ones in buildings (14, 24, etc... more superstitious people will also omit the 13th)
therefore hutao is basically violating a huge taboo left and right with what seems like impunity in chinese, thus explaining why liyue characters are far more taken aback by it than western audiences would be

that's interesting to know! I noticed that liyue had a much more 'death is taboo' view versus mondstadt folk (who basically tie death to the winds and Barbatos by extension, so I assume the idea of being ferried by their god to the afterlife is a lot more comforting than the "black empty abyss" idea one of the ghosts in the border mentions being afraid of), which made me curious to know if it was another chinese influence to the nation or not. It's always fun to discover little bits of cultural details in fantasy worlds inspired by x country/culture.

When I played Hu Tao's story quest I felt like she was desperate for something, it made me kind of sad, I feel like she is trying to make her previous directors proud or she is trying to maintain the organization. I just feel sad for her
Well its not that she's desperate for something but more like She decided to be very happy go lucky ever since she was able to travel through the otherside. Eversince her grandfather died she had the feeling and job to put his spirit at rest (which she eventually did) then lived by the moto "Live life by its fullest" since she too now knows time waits for no man. The hat she also wears is from her grandfather which she refitted alot of time just so she could wear it.
Needless to say she values her grandpa alot and now takes over whatever he did when he was at the wangshen funeral parlor which she takes of utmost importance.

Definitely got that sense as well. I believe the implication is that her grandfather intentionally sheltered her from the outside world (possibly due to her ability to see and interact with the dead) and now that he is gone she's craving connections with other people, but doesn't really know how to do that outside of the funeral parlour business.
So she's doing all this crazy stuff to promote the parlour both in order to stay in business and finally get outside a bit and talk to people, not realising how off putting her relaxed attitude towards death is to most regular people, because to her that's just business as usual.

The voice actor for Hu Tao did an excellent job, she did a good job at making her seem weird and not normal.

Dark jokes aside, I always see Hutao as someone who cracks a joke no matter how dark it is not just because of her personality, but also because she doesn't want to consider her job as something sad and wanted to be positive about it
Think about it, if you work in a funeral service, everyday will be filled with sadness whenever a customer come bcz you knew someone died.
Yup, the notion of death is sad anyway but it doesnt mean you should drag everyone in it. Heck, what Hu Tao is doing exist irl. Most people book their funeral (not the date tho oh god lol), want custom coffins or wanting to be buried next to their families so I dont feel much errors in her marketing
Late but with family in the field there's definitely a black comedy reserved for emergency responders to cope with how dark their jobs are. Helps keep them going, though obviously they don't usually make them in front of normal people.
She's like the every normal mortician. I often see morticians happy and jolly all the time and Hutao really depicts it a lot of times.
I think Hu Tao's gameplay is funny since it matches with her job. She hit harder the lower her hp is, so she always has to be between life and death.
C6 needs to make her lower than the border between life and death tho for more damage
