Just visited CPP this week, in the dorms we saw (in the new buildings like yours) we saw signs posted about dorm room inspections and we were told no appliances allowed except a mini fridge, no extension cords or power strips, no hanging lights on walls etc - are these new rules/restrictions from when you lived in your dorm room? I get that it’s likely for fire hazard reasons /safety but it does see much more restricted than most dorms at other colleges?!

Hi and these restrictions were in place when I lived there and seem to be pretty standard for most dorms. You are allowed a fridge and a microwave, but I don’t believe things such as toaster ovens. Also, there’s some dorm friendly power strips that you are allowed to have that allow for many outlets, there’s just certain restrictions against extension cords. As far as hanging lights on the walls, you aren’t allowed to have Christmas lights (lights with bulbs) but you can have LED light if you place them carefully and don’t cover too much space on the wall. I also recommend using command hooks.

cute dorm!!! cpp is one of my top choices, how would you say the student life is?

Thank you! Glad to hear it’s one of your top choices! Since it is a commuter school, the student life is pretty laid back. It’s also very diverse, and people are pretty friendly. There’s also a ton of clubs that are a good way to connect with people and that don’t apply too much pressure. I definitely recommend living on campus though, and the dining hall is where a lot of people get to socialize/meet.

I have a choice between UCSB and CPP, but CPP seems so desolate and empty. Maybe it's because I haven't visited it in person. From your experience, would you say that this description is true, or completely false? CPP is my top choice because of their CS programs, but UCSB seems much more lively but very lackluster in the STEM field.

Hi and congratulations! Since CPP is a commuter school, it doesn’t have the same school pride that a lot of other schools do have. Also our STEM programs are really good, however, UCSB is indeed more lively, and has a more school pride atmosphere. I honestly recommend visiting both campuses in person first, and then make your decision!

Definitely visit both campuses. I graduated in '18 from UCD (i was between UCD and slo. I'm watching this video bc my sister just got into cpp lol), but I'd say to go with the school you feel most comfortable in. And don't forget affordability as well (you don't want to start your career with a lot of money in debt!). At the end of the day, it will be your home for the next 4-5 years. You'll make it feel like home wherever you decide to go. And a degree is a degree. Networking is super important.
