  • Imtiaz Ali is back with his next directorial after Love Aaj kal 2 - a movie that was panned and a lot of people began to question if Imitiaz Ali was done - with 2 big back to back flops - Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal 2.
But can Amar Singh Chamkila make him bounce back and silence the negativity? Let’s go ahead and find out!
The film has some great casting, editing and costumes and Imitiaz Ali builds a great world around Chamkila.
#diljitdosanjh and #parineetichopra are fantastic and I actually was surprised to see Parineeti sing so well! Not just hindi..but also spot on in Punjabi…
If you liked Imtiaz Ali’s earlier films, you’ll definitely like this one!

@@BantermanBhatt What I loved about the movie was that how sensitively the biopic was handled, it said a lot but also in a very subtle tone for which I really want to give full marks to screenplay writing and dialogues. Also, Chamkila was not made out to be a martyr, a hero or somebody you sympathize with but still the movie leaves you with a thought of whether we ever had freedom of speech in our country(Compare this biopic to Main Atal hoon, Sanju and MS Dhoni, this probably tops the list of any biopic that we have made in India even better than Elvis which was nominated for 8 Oscars). Acting here is just phenomenal barring some supporting actors, but Diljit, Parineeti(even when she is in the background). Also, the fact the fact that all songs were performed live for the shoot, I mean just amazing. I mean I agree, the story could have a little more masala and exaggeration of the underdog or the relationship between him and Jinda but we have seen that so many times before and honestly I was bored of seeing that and as I mentioned when I see Chamkila die in the end I don`t feel sad for just Chamkila, but how we have been curbing freedom of speech even after independence and the last seen where the father says "Sun le beta jab bhi dil kare Chamkila", it is priceless. Also, I am amazed how Imtiaz Ali can capture so much in just one shot - multiple frames, shot transitions, music, background score, expressions, silences. There is definitely better movies out there, but I really love the effort that has gone into this and would like to see more stuff like this made.

Love your take on this. Thanks a lot for sharing this. Very thorough. I definitely do agree strongly with some points there. Especially how he switches seamlessly between shots and animation. Oftentimes using it to an advantage..portraying something so well which otherwise would’ve costed 10 times as much if actually shot.
      Good and smart direction.
I still feel with the jinda point - there should’ve been some scenes with him…it’s like - similar to scenes where you don’t establish a character enough and then show it die or something and the audience doesn’t feel anything as they haven’t had a chance to connect with the character or the conflict..
But nevertheless, I do agree with most of what you’ve got to say. Some very fresh insights.
