20:10 Warning: you can’t go up to 50mph because once you reach the speed limit, you’ll have piston damage by 10%, increasing more until you hit 100% which cause a big puff of steam to eject out from the rear head cylinder, similar to how 844 piston damage occurs at 140mph.
Doesn't matter what time period is, I can't escape Union Pacific
This adds nothing to the comment, but I prefer Jupiter over the 119.
@@Cesp43 I perfer the 10wheeler.
@@Cesp43 same, prefer the Omaha / Idaho overall though
I like all 4-4-0s, but I LOVE the New York Central Railroads J3 streamlined Hudson's and the southern Pacific GS-4s and GS-5s like daylight AKA 4449
@@vaudevillian7 It's my favourite too :) It's the most fancy of the four.
Hi there! The way the dampers work is that when you're going forwards, the rear damper should be opened and the front damper closed. That's so that the air isn't rammed into the front of the firebox like a scoop, disturbing the coal bed and over-cooling the firebox. Instead, the air is allowed to be sucked in, by the fire, from the rear. When going in reverse, it's the opposite way. If you have both dampers open, it doesn't help the fire. You might also have noticed that there were a lot of flames in the cab at times. That happens when there isn't enough draft to keep the fire inside the firebox. It happens when you're travelling fast with the throttle closed and no blower. The cure is to create draft, with the throttle and/or blower. The cylinder cock linkages are fully animated, on both sides, all the way from the handle in the cab to the actual actuator cranks. You can watch it in action from outside using the C key to work the handle.
Also, I think you might have had the handbrake on (on the tender). The / key toggles it (or you can click on the actual handbrake wheel behind the fireman).
btw, just wanted to say, I have pretty much all of your trains, and they are the main reason I still play TSC aside from union works JP routes. hope you are doing well.
@@Aliceintraining Thank you very much! I appreciate it :)
@@Smokebox That would make sense on why it was slowing down a tiny bit when the throttle was off. Beautiful mod tho🎉
@@Smokebox Despite having never operated a train in real life and only having played Railroads Online! in terms of train simulation games, it somehow felt to me like he had a brake on somewhere. I am certain that something showing red at the head of the train in the UI influenced this opinion, even though rationally I have no idea how this game works precisely and that element might always show red.
Fun Fact the original 119 was one of the earliest locomotives that was built with an injector and the extended smokebox, because before then you had to use the crosshead pumps to inject water into the boiler and you could only do that while on the run. As for the color, the replica does have the same color pallet as the original, but some argue that the colors are in the wrong places, which is difficult to determine as there are only black and white photos of the original. those pre water valves are for putting steam into the feedwater pipes to pre-heat the steam before going into the boiler.
I comment down that earlier as well about the 119, moreover the injectors was in fact had been applied to all of locomotives of the UP by its Chief Mechanical Engineer Isaac Congdon.
That's cool as hell!
Hyce: Dude get up and shovel faster?
Firemen: Union says I'm on break.
LOL
There's a community route on RWA called Laramie Plains, which extends the default 1869 Cheyenne route, over Sherman Hill to Laramie and Medicine Bow!
For the passenger views, use Ctrl+Arrow L and R to switch between cars.
Cheers, that would be great!
Imagine if they connected the Promontory route with the Cheyenne route...
Smoke box is just, yeah. Hyce - 2022
"Train Brake 98% Apply"
Yeah, I wonder why Hyce can't get any speed..
Just to let you know Hyce, you were fighting your locomotives handbrake the entire time.
Smokebox's 1860's era stuff works on the games handbrake system, in order to simulate the individual brakemen. As a result, the handbrakes are only ever fully on or fully off, and the whistle signals release or apply the handbrakes in a fairly unwieldy manner (basically, NEVER sound a single tiny blast from the whistle while moving unless you want to stop, you WILL lose a lot of speed if you do, if not outright grind to a halt).
You can manually work the brakes in the Coupling menu, they are controlled by the little cog symbol underneath each car. If there isn't a cog symbol, that car doesn't have handbrakes to apply.
Another tip about Smokebox's 1860's locomotives: the Locomotive/Tender (depending on the locomotive) handbrakes are NOT controlled by the whistle signals, probably because the Engineer would be the one releasing them in the first place. As a result of this, you were fighting your locomotive's handbrake the entire way down.
@@techno1561 no the handbrake is separate from both
@@techno1561 You could certainly argue that it should, given that IRL, the Handbrake is just a manual chain-and-pully/ratchet system to apply the brake shoes, but the game counts them as three separate systems, as Vaudevillian pointed out.
Besides which, its entirely possible that the reading Hyce had about the train brake was just the game getting confused, since Smokebox's 1860's steam locomotives don't even HAVE a Train brake OR Locomotive brake system, only the handbrakes and throwing the cutoff lever into reverse.
Sadly I missed you in Carson City. I wanted to be at the Steam Up event but... Life of a truck driver. In Gulfport MS already this 4th of July.
That's how it goes - perhaps another time!
I’m glad to see 119 getting some love, she’s always overshadowed by Jupiter. Fair enough I suppose. Did you know that 119 was only chosen cause she was the closest loco to the main line? There was a bridge washout and the UP needed a choo choo
I did not know that.
@@Hyce777 it’s an amazing story, some proper 1800’s shenanigans. They rolled the passenger cars over this battered bridge, but it wasn’t strong enough to hold up the loco they wanted to use. So they fired up 119 cause she was closest to the cars 😅.
Btw
The tender brake was on the whole time
...damn
@@Hyce777 that's why you were going so slow
@@Hyce777 also I use a quote from you all the time Wich is
"How loud is that whistle
YES"
Now that's a thing of beauty! I have to confess, the Americans from the 1860s-1880s are my personal favs! I must play this sim!
Hey Hyce the UP railroad has came a very long way sens the early days of the railroads and all the safety and improvements that came with it
Awesome. These locomotives are true masterpieces.
What a thing to wake up to..
Love the content Hyce :)
Would love to see Smokebox make a Shay for TS, or pretty much anything
Same
The American 4-4-0 is the pinnacle of classic locomotive beauty
Would be great if smokebox could do some Australian steam locomotives such as the 3801 and the garret. I would for sure play with those locos!
yes please if those exist!
Coming back to this video after a year but yes, definitely!
Someone really polished that steam dome!
The yellow looks weird for me, IDK
HAND BRAKE ON TENDER COME ON HYCE!!!
... nailed it
Entire journey with 98% train brakes applyed.... You did it great! -> That poor Tender now have huge flat wheels.... (may I say square wheels?) ;)
Me: ( thinks of that one Thomas episode ) also me: LOL
You forgot to release the handbrake on your tender is why you weren't rolling well lol
I've forgot it enough times that now I check it every 5 minutes when I'm running
What a pretty locomotive
6:31 I like the bell movement on the steam locomotive it just makes it feel really but I do know that in Trainz Simulator 2009 a 4-8-4 U2g Northern type steam locomotive have the good bell sound but not the movement nore the steam living the whistle but Trainz Sim 12 on the Y6B steam leaves the whistle but it has a bad bell sound like from a diesel loco and no bell movement
The Trainz model of the 119 has bell movement!
The only way to modulate the brakes is on the HUD, either the brake is on on a car or it isn’t
btw, you forgot to get the tender break. also while I love smokebox, the BB and FEF are a bit too much to fully run solo. that being said, I do think the 280 is overall the best to run solo for the fact that it has a powered Jonson plus a sight glass, gages, and a really well set up control deck.
Oof. Haha.
@@Hyce777 You pulled a kAN.
smokebox's 1860's stuff is a real pain to get going for me
Same
That’s a shame, it’s really simple when you get going
Takes a gentle touch for sure
Do you mean literally, as it starts with the wagon and tender handbrakes on. It’s definitely one you need to read the manual for
It was great meeting you at the Great Western Steam Up!
Likewise, cheers :)
Hey hyce, from your "Fastest train to liverpool" video made a month ago, well some one got the express train up to 130 MPH so what you said in the title was fasl ( sorry for my spelling LOL XD)
Lol well done by that person hahaha
@@Hyce777 same, when i heard of it i was shocked, but when i saw the clip, i was mind blown (BTW my O.C. aka my CZcams pic went 136 MPH FYI IDK what to say to the great Hyce of youtube)
What kind of spark arrestor did they put in a Victorian loco like this. I am guessing maybe a cyclone
I saw a video on detail valley on a modded Polish ST44 and I would love to see you try and drive it.
Speed limits? In the 1860's? Weren't there accidents because the railroads more or less slapped their engineers on the back and said "Just be on time or else!" ...and that was that? lol
Ok you mentioned VR, how much fun would that be running a steam locomotive
Its funny how you did tbis on up 106 birthday
There now needs to be a ding dong sticker for the standing by the switch.
YES!
love your vid any thout on what part of this game aer best to buy woudl love to play some of the train you run on here
You should check out the USATC S160 it's on the steam store for train simulator classic. It has a quill able whistle!!!
RIP train brakes. They were applied 96% the whole trip. Lol
The carman can change the brake shoes... Lol
@@Hyce777 not your train not your problem. You just drive the choochoo part 😀
that train like cool it kinda looks like the Eureka.
This engine truly is beautiful. The one thing I'm still confused about is why the boiler pressure couldn't keep up. Maybe it's just an 1860's thing
The dampers weren't set correctly (and the tender handbrake was on all the time). The dampers are operated with those two red handles sticking up from the floor. The left is the front damper, the right one is for the rear damper. When going forwards, the front damper should be closed (handle down) and the rear damper has to be open (handle up). With practice, it's easy to keep the boiler pressure at around 119 pounds. You just have to watch the gauge carefully and as soon as you notice the pressure dropping, even slightly, back off on the throttle and reduce the cutoff (bring the reverser back one or two notches). When you see the needle rising again, it means you can open the throttle and/or give the loco more cutoff. Basically, use the throttle and reverser to balance the steam usage with the steam generation, prioritising maintaining boiler pressure over speed. Also, there's no point trying to go fast if the boiler pressure is falling. Allow the loco to slow down to the point where it's using less steam and not using it up faster than it can be produced (it's all about horsepower). Do that and you can't really go wrong.
Me operating it incorrectly, lol!
don't forget to make sure your Tender is full!
How are you getting the smoke to come out of the stack while it’s stationary? Mine doesn’t do that. Smoke only starts coming out once I start moving
no idea, probably blower?
Hyce, would love to see you do a video walk around of the Locomotive in Red dead redemption 2. It's so simple, but I think you would have alot to say. Thanks for the great content.
Any chance we can get a Santa Fe decapod on here with a crows nest tender? I have to have 3 of these on my model railroad to operate the jobs they once did 1910-1935 so about a hundred years ago
That'd be lovely!
Lets try to break 100 on this thing down saluda grade next time
interesting route! would love to see another faster run with a longer train, see if you can keep it above 40mph the whole way?
That'd be fun!
Don't forget to ride the McKeen motor car while in Carson city
7:48 how fast can the old Western engine get to Hyce?
On a typical consist of that time, about 39 mph but you can possibly highball up to 50 but I warned, there’s a speed limit for going over that.
UPRR 119 wouldn’t survive derail valley, or would it???? Also just a side note question, was it common for trains in the old west to run out of wood and/or water whilst traveling on the transcontinental railroad?
5:59 that must be Daniel Boone I think he may have been around when railroading was still new I think I don't know much about Westerns but I do know a know a thing about railroads
I that’s Jim Bridger. The engine has 2 historical figures on each side of the sand dome and on the left side, the fireman side, is Johnny Appleseed.
36:00 you probably had the tender brake on the whole time.
Yep, I think he did :D
Biiiiig ooooof.
@@Hyce777 it would be nice if we could get a model of the 119 as retired (as UP 343), which likely did have air brakes...
Oooooooooooo a 4-4-0
31:45 did you kick off the tender breaks Hyce? Like you had to do on Railroads Online
....nope
@@Hyce777 oops well the 119 is from the same time as the other Railroads Online engines and tenders for the engines
Sometimes didn't the Johnson bars come back and pin the drivers up against the back of the cab
Possibly? Not that I've heard of.
What back of the cab?
Alaboard Casey Jones Let's Go 🚶♂️ 🚶♂️🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃,0:05
You want to know why your train bloody stopped. The 119. It's because the boiler water level was at 0.49. When you decide to stop the video. So of course your train couldn't reach to town because you didn't bother to check your water. And did you ever bother to check how much coal you had left in the tender.
I feel like you are implying there are two watering sidings along the way because you may need them. I could be wrong.
@@GretchenDawntreader no I think that's exactly right. The Eureka and the 119. Don't have a very long range so I'm pretty sure that the water towers are meant for you to stop and refill on water. And fuel so I think you got it right
That's not what the scenario tells you to do.
can we get this and this Jupiter in rail roads online!
did you leave the tender handbrake on?
.... Probably
Please run literally any eastern route in the US (east of the Mississippi river)
Lol, i will see what I can do.
Hey Hyce great video again but I found something weird eventho I am not a member of your channel I could watch a members only video! So idk what happened but ye I thought I'd let ya know
Huh, that's weird. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for letting me know :)
You wouldn't mind doing a tutorial on how to get this started up and moving would you? I own this and have no clue how to operate it.
You could watch this video I made a few years ago, although it pre-dates the latest corrections and additions to the locomotive (such as the addition of the injector). czcams.com/video/iQJR9HAF2Ws/video.html
There's also a lot in the manual (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks\Manuals\EN\Smokebox - UP119 Steam Locomotive Add-on Manual - EN.pdf). You can also press Ctrl + D to change to Easy mode, which makes it easier to move the reverser (Johnson bar).
Can vouch for Smokebox’s manuals and video tutorial, they really help, and when you’ve got it they’re so simple to operate with hindsight, just a bit different and beautifully modelled
@@Smokebox When all else fails, read the instructions.
Looks more like Texas than Wyoming to me
Both flat and boring, lol
Also you can't go over 50mph with any of these engines in the game
Jupiter
119
Omaha
Idaho
Gurrilla class
Will you play RRo again?
Yes
My does my camera say battery exhausted (it is a Nikon coolpix b500)
Idk
I guess it is old
I replaced the batteries yesterday with a 2 normal Duracell batteries 1 chargeable and an energizer
What route? I would like it.
It's the Cheyenne 1869 route if I recall.
Aren’t you in Nevada right now?
You bet! Pre recorded.
It makes me so angry that he just ran with the brake on the hole time
440 American
They don't make locomotives like that anymore
Hey Mark that is sweet. You know something I wish Smokebox would make? The J class engines like 611 lol. Hey do you think you could message me? Look forward to hopefully hearing from you man. Jeff aka NW611J.
Hey Jeff! That would be cool. My cell service in Nevada has been crap so messenger isn't playing nice, sorry if I have missed anything!
@@Hyce777 no worries man I understand hope you’ve been having fun and I know it would be cool lol. Hope we can chat when you get back man.
Better yet if they made the original 1879 J class, and/or the 1903 J class...! There aren't really any 4-4-2's in TS yet, are there...?
I hear red wheels go faster.
it had that box on screen at the start describing setting the train brakes and dragging the train down the grade, maybe the train brakes are just set so hard the whole time that eventually the engine couldn't pull it anymore?? I dunno
@@GretchenDawntreader they only have handbrakes modelled, on the engine and cars, and they all start with them set whatever the scenario. You can turn off the car brakes with the correct whistle pattern or manually on the HUD on the consist section. Then the loco handbrake has to be done separately, either from the cab or on the HUD too. The last bit is what Hyce missed, still good fun though
Is Wyoming really just nothing but nothingness?
Back in 1869, yes.
