This is the second last anthem that we will encounter from Africa. My performance is on the side of the more energetic and forward-driven performances of this anthem. This energy can be attributed to the very active bass line, which I heard in a concert band version on CZcams and transcribed for my own use here.
With voice, this anthem works really well at a slower tempo, as it allows the meaning of the text to linger with the listener.
I think that both ways of performing the anthem - one a slow solemn prayer, the other an energetic interpretation that mirrors Ivory's Coast's anthem - are equally valid.
I really enjoyed playing this anthem. It was nice to get a mix of the solemn, rhythmically still music contrasted by the drive of the bassline. The melody itself is quite catchy as well, and I've taken interest in listening to versions with voice on CZcams.
The sheet music I used as a starting point can be found here: www.nationalanthems.info/gh~.gif. It was pretty clear from the beginning that I would need to transcribe a recording to make the anthem more interesting, and I hope that you can agree that I succeeded in doing this.
The music of Ghana's National Anthem (God Bless Our Homeland Ghana) was written in 1957 by Ghanaian composer and teacher, Philip Gbeho, whose composition was selected in a competition to be the national anthem of Ghana. Gbeho had also originally written lyrics for the anthem, but these were replaced in the 1970s with a new lyric by Michael Kwame Gbordzoe, a student whose work was chosen, like Gbeho's, in an open competition.
Although Gbordzoe's lyrics have been adopted for the anthem since the 1970s, the Ghanaian government has not officially recognized his work, which may be due to the abrupt changes in regimes.
