  • In this week’s doctor vlog I’m taking you with me for a 13 hour on call shift in the hospital. I’m currently a junior doctor in neurosurgery so you will get to see exactly what I do on shift - emergencies, routine jobs etc. I’ll also be talking you through my doctor’s rota for the week and answering the much asked question: “how many hours do doctors work per week?”
    I hope you enjoy this video and get an insight into what doctors do day to day. Let me know in the comments below whether you’re a medical student, another healthcare professional or if you’re just watching for fun.

      @@SarahNicholls yeah that's absolutely true. We've all been very overwhelmed the last few months as staff are leaving left and right and we're having a very hard time recruiting replacements. One of our teams currently only has a single full-time member of staff and no manager! Despite everything though you clinicians seem to be having a much tougher time in my experience. I'm sure we'll manage together though one way or another 😊

    Hi Dr. Nicholls. Thanks for the shout out, and sorry we didn't get a chance to speak. I find your videos really useful as I'm now on CP2 at Derby doing paediatrics and am also a GEM student so would have been good to pick your brain. Now CP2 has started I doubt I'll get many chances to work NHSP but if I do I'll keep an eye out for you and maybe get some pearls of wisdom regarding CP2 and beyond. Also really liked your video with Dr Hope/Sick Notes, the story of a welly causing a fracture was very funny. Cheers. Matt

    One of my F2 friend got a PhD studentship in Cambridge!!! I am super proud of her. I have a feeling that she plans to go into academia in the long run. She had been telling me that being a doctor is too stressful. She was telling me that she can't wait for the end of July, so she can focus on sorting out her PhD stuff. I could be wrong, but I think July is when she finishes with her F2 year.

    Hi Dr Sarah 😄 do FY1/2 doctors get to choose the rotations they want? (Eg. Was this neuro rotation something you chose or was it allocated to you?) Thanks a ton! 😄

    • @SarahNicholls
      @SarahNicholls  Před 4 lety

      Hello! So sorry I missed this when you originally sent it. YOu rank the list of jobs you want to do in F1/F2 and they come as a 'pre-packaged' set of 6 jobs over the 2 years, so you don't get to individually choose your jobs but if you really liked a certain speciality then you would rank the pre-packaged set of jobs higher if it includes that job. If you do well in your exams then you are more likely to get your first choice. There are other factors involved as well, like how popular the geographical area is that you want to work in. Hope that helps! x

    Hi Sarah! Did you have doubts finishing medical school about whether or not you were actually prepared to handle patients? As a final year medical student, I find myself even kinda scared thinking of how work is going to be and if I will be able to manage it correctly, even with help and supervision, as I know I won’t be alone doing so. Thanks! Loving the vlogs!!!

      Sheila González hello, this is a really important question and my answer is definitely yes. I think every medical student feels that when they step up to F1. We had a talk from a consultant recently who said the two most difficult years in her life were when she started as a doctor and when she stepped up to consultant. The expectations placed on you suddenly shift massively and you feel like your whole world has turned upside down!
      The main things I would say are to remember your ABCDE, always ask for help when you need it and don’t assume you have to know everything. Everyone knows you are a brand new doctor!
      I’m sure you will be brilliant, would love to know how you get on xx

    Just a question that I wanted to ask (nothing to do with vid). In Aus, there is substantial pressure and even bullying amongst doctors. So much so, that there have been a lot of suicides of doctors and medical students. There’s also a fear of seeking help for their mental well-being because they may lose their job. It’s only being tackled now since it’s gone public. Is the same happening in the UK or everywhere? Or just here in Aus? Thanks. And if so, I hope that it’s addressed soon xx
