    I think when it comes to dioramas there’s a disconnect between people who would like to do dioramas and people who actually do. I’ve had many an idea for a diorama and have made approximately zero….. but it still impacts my purchasing decisions and likely skews market research

      That's a very good point. I too have many diorama ideas, but haven't actually built one for about 45 years! Many thanks for the comments.

      Yeah good point. I keep buying things for possible diorama builds, airfield equipment in 72nd scale, 1/35th scale bits and bobs, buildings etc. 40 years plus of collecting and squirreling this stuff away, total dioramas built to date: 0.
      But as I explained to my partner, you can't ever build it if you don't have it.

      @@warpedplastic Just found your channel & subscribed. Retired now & getting back into modelling. Done some armour, boats, atv's & figures. All 1/32 or 1/35 & I don't think you'd notice the difference unless they were side by side. Fi 156 1/32 & 1/35 wingspan difference is 40mm, I think.
      Speaking of dioramas. Am building a large garage one side will be my new modelling room. one end is ear marked for a wharf scene for my S-100, MAS-568 & LCM-6 (a stretched LCM-3). THAT much water has me a little worried.
      Mind boggling the stuff that's available today compared to the '60's & '70's. I remember complaining when Airfix paint hit 23c.

      @@aussie6910 Many thanks for the comments and for subscribing. Sounds like you have some ambitious plans! You are correct that the difference between 1/35th and 1/32nd probably wouldn't be noticeable unless viewed side by side, but if we're going to stick with the idea of constant scales then we shouldn't have to compensate for mismatches in size. 40cm is a pretty significant size difference!

      @@warpedplastic 40mm. Yes that's why I don't display them together. The 1/32 M-36 I built 50yrs ago does look a tiny bit big but at least the 1/35 track I had to put on one side almost fit the drive sprocket. It's on the far side so not noticeable.
      It's to much to expect that everything we want is gonna be in the scale we want & I'm not paying resin kit prices.
      My current effort is turning a 1/72 PT-109 hull into a 1/35 divers boat, w/full interior & outboard. Had to split the rear 2/3s to get the sides parallel. A lot of filler & bracing but it's turning out good. It's all to do with getting my skill level up for the expensive stuff.
      You have a good day. It's stopped raining & I have a shed to build. All the best!

    I like the idea of 1/35 for diorama integration but those are some very valid points you’ve made about how few dioramas are made in proportion to overall models made.
    I have made several airfield dioramas or vignettes but with 3D printing you can get what you need in whatever scale you want.
    Thanks,
    Ian

    I was one of the commenters in the survey video that was in favor mostly for diorama potential. There is one more thing that makes me like 1/35th aircraft more. I didn't wanna add to that comment as it didn't change my vote and didn't want to drag the conversation more than necessary. I may not make many dioramas, mostly due to lack of actual space than anything else, but a thing I like to do is to switch around the models I display around the house and when I do I like to arrange them so that models belonging to the same period/nation/theme are displayed together. A diorama without the background and with the models loose if you will. I really like to match the scale when possible to appreciate the size difference and that means that 1/32nd scale aircraft are mostly by themselves. I can't recall how many times I got the question "Wow, was it xxx so big/small relatively?" from guests when I had to mix scales to keep the theme I wanted to go for. To be fair I get the same question when I display my 1/48th Lancaster with the 1/48th Stuka too but at least in that case I can simply say "Yup, the Lanc was a giant".

    • @warpedplastic
      @warpedplastic  Před 2 měsíci

      Many thanks for the comments. Similar reasoning to mine but from the other side of the debate! I can't display the new 1/35th aircraft with my established collection of 1/32nd aircraft. I guess the crux of the issue is that the manufacturers kind of screwed us over decades ago by choosing two different scales for aircraft and armour.

    I'm not as hung up on scale as I'm about subject and space to put it. Technically you don't see many AFVs on an airfield barring AAA guns. Great study mate, still want that 35th 747😊.

    • @warpedplastic
      @warpedplastic  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That's kind of my thinking; mixing aircraft into an armour scale doesn't make much sense given the fact they rarely mix in reality. But display space is definitely a factor regardless of scale! I'm just waiting on that lottery win to produce the 1/35th 747. Many thanks for the comments.

  • @jameslarosa2396
    @jameslarosa2396 Před 2 měsíci

    I think there are probably 1/32 versions of most 1/35 scale aircraft anyway. So you probably have a choice. And if you just do stand alone aircraft and not dioramas, it doesn't really make much difference if your kit is 1/32 or 1/35. I think they're both too big anyway. I'm a 1/48 and 1/72 modeler when it comes to aircraft so maybe my opinion is irrelevant. And 1/16 armor, well I'm not a fan. But I do go for 1/24 scale autos. So I might also be contradicting myself.
    PS I'm happy to see you support MS research.

      For the most part that's true, except for the 1/35th Kate, which really gets my goat. I would've loved to have a 1/32nd Kate to sit next to my Tamiya Zero but, alas, it is not to be. Don't even get me started on the 1/24th and 1/25th cars! Many thanks for the comments.

  • @od1452

    I think you are looking at AC vs AFV modelers. 1/32 and 1/35 are the established scales.. and there is the 1/48 now. But I don't really care... there are plenty of kits out there.

    • @warpedplastic
      @warpedplastic  Před 2 měsíci

      Well, yes, that was really the point of the survey. AFVs and aircraft each have their own "established" scales and it's been that way for decades, for better or worse. So trying to mix the two at this stage is a bit pointless. But you are right, there is no shortage of kits to build. Many thanks for the comments.

      Yep, have to agree with you there! It's a shame Hasegawa didn't carry on with their series of 1/32nd '30s aircraft, but I guess they don't appeal as much as Messerschmitts or Focke Wulfs to current modellers so it's unlikely we'll get more. Still, I'm glad we have the 4 they did make in that series.

    Given your channel is primarily aircraft it seems to me the bias would be to 1/32 given 1/35 is so "young" in terms of a new standard. Also remember that 1/72 is the only standard as it was the scale for aircraft recognition models made during ww2. All the rest were probably some guy saying..."Hey...what if did 1/48?"...or like the answer I got from the owner of Kotare when he told me the reason he doesn't put engines in his models he's made so far is he doesn't like building them. Like a lot of stuff in life...so random.

    • @warpedplastic
      @warpedplastic  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Interesting comment from Kotare! Especially considering in their WNW days they always put engines in, though admittedly it's not really an option to omit them in WWI aircraft.
      I wish I knew the initial reasoning behind some of the scales we have today. With the exception of 1/35th most are based on the Imperial system as I mention in the video, but some of the choices seem fairly arbitrary regardless. Many thanks for the comments.

      @@warpedplastic From my Facebook post on building one of the company's planes after I made an assumption that maybe they didn't put an engine in was because of cost:
      "As the owner of Kotare let me correct one statement here. The absence of an engine from the kitset was never a financial decision. It was decided on the very first day of brainstorming about the model, before we had costed anything about the project.
      It was basically my decision, but Richard and Darren agreed.
      I don’t like having to build an engine to finish a model. I like to get to my favourite stage, decalling, as soon as possible. I also don’t like to see the compromises in moulding the shape of a beautiful aeroplane that usually happens when manufacturers try to fit the cowlings around an engine.
      As Richard Alexander says, you are lucky to even have a cockpit in the kit, because I usually don’t like building cockpits either! 😉
      However in this model Richard, Darren and Malcolm have created a thing of beauty and I am now building another 2 kits and loving the cockpit.
      By the way, love your work and thanks for buying our model kitset!"
