I'm an elementary school teacher, I bought the desert tiger for a kid and his history nerd dad sent me a long thanks letter and some pictures of his son assemblying the tank and messing with it, i just now realized how detailed and superb this model is and how much i screwed it by not keeping it for myself

When I was 15, I built 1/76 & 1/72 scale tank kits. I remember using black thread to tie the tracks down like they were real heavy metal tracks.

The side skirts were for dust not protection. There's a books like tiger tracks which is first hand accounts and describe the tank. That's how I know those skirts are for the dust giving away there position. The panzer IV has shirtzen as extra protection later in the war.the north African version is the earliest tigers . The tools are called pioneering tools . Cool tanks

  • @daveybyrden3936
    @daveybyrden3936 Před rokem +7

3:27 The "hatch" is actually a pistol port. The real one does not open.
14:28 The narrator wishes that the cupola would rotate, but the real one didn't rotate. It was a genuine problem with the Tiger, that the commander's hatch was always in a specific position, blocking his view. Unfortunately this model doesn't have the right position. The model has pins that fix the cupola angle, but it's wrong. One of his viewing slots should be pointing exactly forwards, and the hatch hinge should be at his 2 o'clock.
4:30 That "box" is actually a solid block that's used to sit the jack on, when you're jacking up the tank.
7:50 FOV have painted the fuel tanks a solid red. That's just wrong. They were made of non-ferrous metal and were not painted at all. Back in the early 1990s an artist painted a Tiger cutaway for a book cover, and he was the first person to depict those tanks as red, and his mistake gets repeated in models and kits as the years go by. He actually consulted with me on his image but didn't send it to me for checking.
7:55 The main fans are not well done. They don't have their blanking plates that would cover the gaps around them. They spin in opposite directions; the real ones were all the same. And they're some distance from their proper position.
10:50 I don't know if you're handling the hatches as FOV intended. The middle, solid rectangle was not a hatch, it was a panel, bolted down. The large grating ahead of it was also bolted down; you could remove it but it was not hinged and it was not linked to the solid panel. Only the rear gratings were hinged to open. You might prop them open if you needed extra airflow, but there are very, very few photos of Tigers doing that.
12:06 The biggest accuracy mistake on the outside of this model, is that large metal-painted C-hook locked into two holders on the left side of the rear wall. Tigers of this era simply didn't have it. They had nothing at all right there.
13:05 A missing segment of skirting is usually damage. It could result in a lot of mud getting thrown up onto your tank. These items were only 5mm thick metal sheeting and were often bent and twisted.
14:00 That little red wheel was actually for the commander to help out in turning the turret! The real one was black, not red.

They looked more like toys when they're in the box, but they looked less toys after putting them by themselves. Tiger tanks are way too cool. Especially like the winter camo, desert camo version. Very nice weathering job. Nice review as well. German tanks are generally so appealing, in my opinion. Could you review more WW 2 German tanks or/and armor?

Just so you know. Idk it's a random detail but the wooden "box" on the front of tiger tanks isn't a box. It's a wooden block. It's used with the jack to help it not sink into the ground. So it's a jack block? Just part of the engineering tools to help you repair the tank in the field

Nice to see Forces of Valor doing some 1/32 armor releases again. Looks like they have a new corporate "partner" as these are new releases with slightly different packaging. But my, how the price has gone up.
I am used to 2008 pricing, on these, and all sorts of 1/18.
But always thought these FoV 1/32 armor were great value, as with the Dragon 1/35 pre built.
The metal track option is great as well, but costs as much as an entire model, back in the day. But nice to see these being re released, as it is a good line.
BTW, love your reviews, and opening up 1/18 to model collectors that may not know much about it.

No that the pistol port on the side! The hatch is on the other side but you will find the very early dumbo Tiger 100 with side bins innthe grey and whitewash has 2 pistol ports and no escape hatch! The cupola top hatch will come right off so they can use the same castings for different variants as the cupla changed from the drum type later on etc and the rear fifel air intakes with the hosing will no be on the white wash version just the exhausts! Tiger 100 is really different the tracks are also mirror type it's the most different Tiger 1 you'll see to all the rest! Tiger 100 i had to add this edit but Tiger 100 was the grey with white wash i just noticed this 3 tone has 100 on the turret too!
Winter Tiger 100 It should have different tracks avaliable for Tiger 100 you can't use the normal metal tracks for it there different!
