- Continuing on with our hydrangea videos. We are going to show you how to take care of the Bobo hydrangea. Bobo is currently my favorite small hydrangea... Our Bobo's are huge and a lot might have to do with our very rich soil we have here but we are going to be aggressive with cutting them back. If you have any questions leave them in the comments below!

Thank you. Your garden is serene and beautiful. A nice place to just sit and take in the beauty of God!
Yes, it is thank you! It is all because of HIM.
A shout out to Rod and his battery powered Craftsman pruner. After the last video, I knew I needed that tool but since all my other tools are Worx brand, I found one on their website and ordered it that day. I hope it works as well as your Craftsman! Just a Thank You for the idea! Being an old lady, I love battery powered tools. Sure saves your muscles!
I am so glad that we were able to give you this tool tip
Beautiful as always, Thank you 😊
My pleasure 😊
Thank you for sharing your experience. I love hydrangeas👍🌻🐦
Thanks for following along.
Thank you so much for these pruning videos - extremely helpful! I would love it if you could walk us through how you decide where to cut. TY
To be honest we really do not pay a lot of attention to were we are cutting, we go more on how tall we want it.
Thanks for doing this video this will really help me!!
Glad it was helpful!
I trimmed back my front Bobo, last late winter. It grew much taller. By summer it developed the side droopy shoots.
They may have week stems the year after the trim. The should strengthen up next year.
I'm so glad I found this. We planted bobos a few weeks ago and they got shocked, it seems, and looked awful. The garden center said they could be cut back. I did it today, but it scared me a bit. Tomorrow I'll go in and cut out the thinner branches, as you recommend.
I am glad this video was helpful to you
Thank you for sharing this and talking in detail about trimming hydrangeas! Are you going to do Limelight’s in the early Spring? Please do!!!!
We trimmed our huge Limelight and we have a video of that coming out in a few days. Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss it! Thank you for watching!
I think it might be a good idea to treat the stems and ground for those beetles.
That maybe a good idea. We have done that in the past.
Great information! Is it the little black flea beetle? They look like a flea but but a little bit bigger. I’ve had such a frustrating time battling these flea beetles. They really like the Bobos and tidbits. Definitely destroyed the leaves and spread a black spot fungus all over my other hydrangeas. I was trying to catch them with yellow stickers but man it was just never ending. I saw them all over hydrangeas at our local greenhouse too. Definitely let us know next year if this hard pruning helped with the bug issue. If you have any tips on dealing with certain bug issues that eat the buds/flower petals like those green cucumber beetles or any other that would be a great tip video too. Owning a greenhouse you guys know so much in caring for your plants. They look pretty amazing. 😊

I bought and planted 10 bobo hydrangeas for my front yard last summer as I was so inspired by your bobos at the nursery. They were a real showstopper as expected. I want mine to become nice and tall and huge like the ones at the nursery. For this reason, I would like to know whether you trim the nursery bobos in the spring or fall. I was intending to trim my bobos in the spring but I really like the clean look of having that done now. I just want your opinion on what you feel is best to get them nice and tall and thankfully - no issues as of yet with anything so far.
I would recommend trimming now if that is when you would like to do it. Take the top 1/3 off
Nice! Do you just trim to whatever height or are you trimming to a specific spot on the branch ?
I trim to wherever. I do not pay attention to the spot.
Those bobos were gorgeous! Are they in full sun? I planted a bobo in part shade late summer (2 hrs only of sun) but now I'm thinking that wasn't a good decision.
I also got 2 limelight hydrangeas (because of you 😅) and planted one in morning sun and late afternoon sun. The other one only gets about 3 hrs of afternoon sun. What do you thinking? I know they are full sun plants but I need a hedge on a place that get 2 hrs of sun only.
Yes, these are in full sun. If you are in the south, part shade may be better suited. They do need around 4-6 ours of sun.
Hi! Where are you located and what month are you pruning in please?
We are located in Michigan. This was in October.
What is the tool you are using? My hands get pretty tired doing a big pruning job! I could use a good power pruner. I would love to see a video on what to do with an old, out of control weigela.
I would like this information, too!! Thanks.
Craftsman Power Pruner. It the Weigela is out of control give it a good hard trim. Take 1/3 to 1/2 off the plant. Do it just like we did the hydrangeas.
@@gardencrossings Thank you!!
Is there some kind of a systemic you could use on these hydrangeas to get rid of the insects?
Yes there is.
Would horticultural oil spray prevent these beetles from coming back next spring?
It may. I am hoping the trim does the trick. Time will tell
What are the tall slender evergreens at get back right ?
To be honest they were there when we moved in. But they are very similar to North Pole
After watching this I’m nervous the 4 I planted in my front garden are going to get massive! I spaced them out according to the tag, how can I keep them below 3.5 feet!
If you trim them every couple years you should be able to keep them shorter. Mine in the front of my house dont get this big.
I’m going to “hack back” my old weigela & spirea. They are old and woody.
Go for it. You will be glad you did.
my bobos chlorosis and have looked aweful for a few years despite feeding attempts. just twigs....i am about to give up on them :( my mountains defoliated too first full year with them. se michigan zone 6a
That is rally strange. I am wondering if there may be an issue with your soil. I would recommend getting it tested.
Did you happen to film a video from this past season on how the Bobo hydrangeas performed after cutting them 2/3 of the way back in 2022?
Here is video that shows all the hydrangeas that were trimmed in 2022 and hw they looked in 2023. czcams.com/video/cVNbsVB8v7M/video.html
@@gardencrossings Great, thank you for the reply and attaching a link!
Oh my gosh can I tell how much I am cringing every time he clips those blooms 😩. I guess it’s because we don’t see them out in the open like yours here in North Texas.
Lol. These are all dried up and ready to be trimmed.
