Hydrangea pruning: Don't sweat it!

- How to prune panicle and smooth hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea arborescens). The big thing is to not sweat it! You won't kill your hydrangea if you make a mistake. But note, this is only for hydrangeas that bloom on NEW wood, meaning the growth they put out this year. Don't prune Hydrangea macrophylla this way (in fact, don't prune Hydrangea macrophylla, aka bigleaf hydrangea, at all in spring) or you'll lose your flowers for this year.

Excellent tutorial. Yours is the first video I have watched that shows EXACTLY how to prune the branches properly. Thank you for sharing, I hope to see more of your videos soon.
Thank you for taking the stress out of this! I was curious about new wood vs. old wood pruning... I think that's where my stress came in to play!!
Two of my favorite things in the world! Newfies and hydrangeas! The sad thing is my hydrangeas outlived my newfies but they both brought joy and beauty to my world.
Hi Lauren
Oh my goodness I knew I loved you the second you said âitâs hard to screw it up.â Thanks for being real!!
It's true! Our plants can overcome a lot of our gardener's silliness.
Thank you for this content. Especially, thank you for the "don't stress out" validation at the beginning. I appreciate you putting out these videos.
this video was released on my birthday, it is a sign that I follow this method for my limelight!!
I like the way you get right into it instead of repeating yourself over and over. Thanks, so much!
Hello Heather
Hope you are safe from the virus?
I love hydrangeas, but Iâm here for the Newfies! đđ„°
Yeah! A Zone 5 gardener!
Hello penny
Thank you for your concise, uncomplicated, well explained tutorial. I was always a bit confused re the old vs new wood growth, but I finally understand it!
Most informative and easy to follow video I've watched yet
came for the info, stayed for those adorable newf babies. thanks for the helpful information!
Finally, someone who is educated about pruning! Excellent excellent...thank you.
My kind of gardener. Lovely video.
Just what I needed. I have no clue what Iâm doing, so Iâm just going to have at it whilst not freaking out.
I love how you cover lots of various problems and details about how to deal with them.
I also lov e that you take it down to a half, no wonder in your new video its so bushy and pretty! the blooms are perfect size too!
This is just what I needed. You made this look seamless! Thank you!
I love your video! You quickly get through the information without a lot of non-relevant conversation. THANKS!!! Youâre now my garden go to, glad I found this video!
Hi how are you doing
So happy to see a gardener with a light hearted stress free attitude đ gardening is to relieve stress and if we get stressed out about even this.....then, it is not really worth it. Many thanks. Subscribed. Following đ
First video that showed exactly where to prune: THANK YOU!
Oh ohâŠ.I just planted my little like hydrangeas in June and they grew beautifully. I cust a few flowers according to another videos few days prior to a heatwave. After the heatwave the remaining flowers turned crispy and ALL the leaves fell offâŠ.I was heartbroken! I sure hope my plant survives. The leaves are now growing back, but I see no signs of the flowersđą
Love the cameo by your darling dog!
Hello Kimberly
This the best video I've seen on how to prune hydrangeas. I've been stressing about cutting back my giant hydrangea, but I feel confident about taking care of this year. Thank you!
Thanks for the tips! We bought a house last spring and the previous owner had planted several Hydrangeas around the property. I had no idea what to do with them. I am glad I just let the blooms die and I didn't do anything. Now its Valentine's Day and I know that end of next month I can probably look at pruning them once they get some swollen buds.
So glad I found your video. Very helpful to finally know the proper way to trim my different hydragea.
Thank you for your fun tips on pruning hydrangeas! You're on point when you show us how to have fun with gardening! Loved it!
I have been worrying about how to prune/take care of our new hydrangeas planted last year and hopefully the mild winter will have helped and with your video we have new found confidence!!!
Thank you for such a great video and information!!!!
I love your take on gardening. I feel so much better about how I accidentally hacked at my hydrangea a year ago. Now I'm not worried that I ruined it!
Hydrangeas are tough shrubs and pretty darn forgiving. Itâll be great and if you make a mistake pruning, thereâs always next year!
@@TheImpatientGardenerHelp! What if you prune all the way down and take off half the main stem off before winter?
@@Endurance00501 The worst thing that will happen is that you may not have flowers this year or not until late in the season. But you havenât killed it.
@TheImpatientGardener Does it come back thicker overall? Or starting over on the branches and blooms?
Excellent video! I grow all varieties in my garden on Cape Cod. Your advice is spot on-- don't worry, go for it and be amazed each summer that what looks so scalped in March is shockingly prolific by July and August. I notice you didn't cover macrophyllas, probably owing to your zone 5 climate. I couldn't grow them in Syracuse, zone 5, either. Cape Cod is a 7. Keep up the good work. I especially loved your approach to clean up. I'm the same. Phase 1 is prune the plant. Phase 2 is take the branches to the dump--whenever I get around to it. Here's to a great 2019 in the yard.
Thank you! I have a few macrophyllas around but most of them are not long for this world (at least in my yard). Itâs just such a hard place for them to be bud hardy and why bother with that when there are so many reliable bloomers? Iâm a terribly inefficient gardener, but I can only concentrate on one job at a time so I end up making a mess and then cleaning up a mess. Good to know Iâm not alone.
Where have you been all my CZcams life. Thank you for such a simple explanation. I see you also like, Proven Winners. I love, love, love their flowers. I think you're great, and I just subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to more videos.
Thanks for such a nice comment, Valerie!
Hi
Love your method. Very useful information. Thank you. From Turkey.
Absolutely brilliant. Simple and to the point. from new zealand.
OMG! Thank you for making that super easy to understand. Youâre the first one and I so appreciate you! Heading out to the yard now.
Hello
Hi, looking for info on how to prune my hydrangeas, I found you, and I am so glad I did!!! This was a great video, full of informative information! One thing I would like to mention, my sister-in-law found out the hard way, that it is a good idea to wear safety glasses when pruning shrubs like hydrangeas. Luckily, she did not lose her eye or her eyesight in that eye, but she did have a significant injury. Just saying! Thank you so much for sharing, I have subscribed, and will go back and watch your videos that I have missed, and will look forward to future additions!
I cut the dried blooms with some stem early December and spray paint them, and use for a winter wreath. Then come spring, I give the bush a good pruning.
Just found your site and going back to watch all your videos. Glad I found you. Now I can watch you and Garden Answer.
Janice Sisson Iâm glad you found me, Janice! Itâs fine to watch Garden Answer (well, obviously) because we actually garden in the same zone but Lauraâs garden is SO far ahead of mine at this time of the year. Itâs fun to see the differences.
Yes Lauraâs garden is ahead of yours but I think sheâs having an unusually early spring. Iâve watched her for years and sheâs usually on pace with ours. I too am zone 5. I live in Windsor Ontario Canada, across the river from Detroit, Michigan.
Iâm so nervous about my 1st hydrangea! This is so helpful
Nikkiâs Drama Greenhouse Youâll do great! No worries, they are tough plants.
Luv your
No nonsense approach. Thank you for sharing
Hello from Central WI! Thank you for the straightforward and helpful info.
Hello how are you
Very reassuring. I love the low stress approach! Thank you!
Thank you so much!! My hydrangea is all over the place. I canât wait for after winter to follow this method. Turns out I was doing it wrong đ
I LOVE YOUR ATTITUDE! and your videos. My kind of gardener for sure! "Don't sweat it!" philosophy gives me confidence. Your pace is perfect! Some videos are WAY too long and they talk so slow..."I'm not an idiot" ...ya know? I can understand something if you talk fast, and, in fact, if you talk slow, I'm more apt to give up because my mind wanders in between the presenter's words. Ha! Thanks so much. You've been a great help!!! :) I'll be looking for more videos from you as I have more gardening questions.
Thank You!
Thanks ! I grew up with them everywhere in my moms yard(up north new england) n now im on the west coast of florida, sarasota area, and thought Id try them out here. Wish me luckđ»đŒđđ·đ
Thank you for the information. My daughter has Hydrangeas in her yard and has asked me for some advice in getting them ready for winter.
We are now going to wait until just before the snow melts.
Hello Corinne
You are so wonderful! Nothing has to be picture perfect and they grow beautifully in spite of your level of experiance, available time, winter snow load and deer hacking on it.
Thanks so much for the advice! I planted a bunch of new hydrangeas this past year and wasn't sure how to prune them. Now I feel ready to tackle the job!
Great! Glad to be of help. Go a little light on the pruning while it's still getting established.
Great video taking the fear out of this task.
Hello Barbara
You did a great job. I now know what to do. and you made so easy to do==much complicated
Keep the stems (the long straight ones) and make a beautiful 'star' wrapped with twine. Make them different sizes and hang them over your garage door, on your fence, on your house. Easy to make and really nice. The limelight rhodos are great for this with their long stems.
Fantastic information Erin! Have a great spring!
I have Limelights and I trim before spring, but kept meaning to look up if I was doing it correct. So thank you! I live in western WI
Shoot itâs been warm and I donât know what Iâm doing so I just hacked my whole yard. I need to watch more of your videos
Thanks for the pruning info! LOVE THE NEWFY's TOO.
Another great video. Thank You. It helps me be able to send the vid to my clients so they understand what I'm doing to their Hydrangeas.
So glad you enoyed it! I hope it helps your clients too.
Thanks for teaching me I only have 1 flower blooming this year of dividing 3 bushes!
Hi Mary
You have a really nice property, lucky you đ
And dogs
Great video, Thank you! Love your pups, my daughter has one!
Hi Kathy
Thank you for this wonderfully informative video. Watching from London đŹđ§
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. đ
Great information, thank you!
Great tips!!! Iâm hoping for tons of blooms this season đ€đŸ
It looks like you could almost make that hydrangea into a tree form. Glad to see a new video from you. I just got the BoBo hydrangea last year, geeked to see hoe it does this year.
Marcia W Bono has done so well for me! And yes, if I had started pruning that Limelight into a standard (tree form) several years ago I guess I could. But I like the sort of vase shape itâs taken on.
Great info! I have to prune mine in Fall as our snows are so wet and heavy (it is also called Sierra Cement) and we get so much of it it just rips the stems off.
We have wet snows in Indiana. Here it is October, and I have not cut the blooms off, but they are heavy. I've never had this many blooms before. Can I trim some of the largest blooms without hurting spring's new growth?
@@LindaLuxable That depends on what type of hydrangea it is. Is it a hydrangea that only blooms on old wood or on new as well? I do cut just the blooms off of my hydrangea that blooms only on old wood, but nothing further below. I will prune back my Paniculata hydrangeas next month, November. I need to do some videos since we have unique conditions (the wet heavy snows) and have to prune a bit differently.
Hello how are you
Thanks! I have the first kind you pruned and was wondering how to get it under control next spring. Love your Newfoundlanders as well! :-)
Thank you, n l love ur dog 2.
The Newfies!
Thank you! I'm not scared any more!!
Love the Newfoundland Dogs -- love my newfy's
Wonderful information! Thank you for sharing!
Love your âno stressâ approach to pruning!
Thank you, Erin. Your videos are so helpful and your relaxed attitude adds to the enjoyment of gardening. I'm in Central New York (5b) so it's wonderful to have someone who understands cold and heavy snow. I planted some hydrangeas last year that were labeled as Annabel, but I think they might actually be Limelight. Now I know I can prune either one with the same result. Love the pups too.
Hello how are you
Just found your channel and subscribed tonight. Love your name and your relaxed attitude!!! âNot a high stress situation.â
From Chicago suburb.đ
Hi there neighbor to the south! :) Thanks for subscribing and saying hello.
Thank you. Planted my first hydrangea this year.
Enjoy it!
i've been so afraid to prune my hydrangeas because I was told it is easy to cut off the area that will make next year's flowers, that if I cut off an end leaf bud that would grow, then I've cut off next year's flower. From your video, it sounds like that isn't true and I can have at it! Thanks!
BanDana Gramma So long as youâre pruning panicle (ie Limelight) or arborescens (ie Annabelle) types youâre fine. Macrophylla (ie Endless Summer) and serrata are different and you will need to prune those immediately after flowering so as to not affect the next yearâs flowers.
Hello đ
Excellent! I have been looking for info like this
Love your presentation style, thank you.
Thank you. This was very helpful!
Great thorough information. Thank you!!!
Nice delivery! Thanks!
Thanks much for the tips...nice job!
Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
Great video!! And just when I needed it!! I've got incrediball, bobo & lil lime...this will the 2nd yr for all of them & I almost cut them today...but I'm still somewhat intimidated by them. (chronic over thinker here)đđ»Thanx for the no nonsense tips..I will be takin care of business tomorrow! Much appreciated!!!
Donamtrx Good luck! Thanks for watching.
Great video, have you done a video on how to fertilize hydrangeas?
Thank you I was so lost !!!
Hello how are you doing my friend
Terrific video . good job
Hello how are you
Very helpful - thanks so much!
Hello Janet
Excellent.
Thank you.
Donât know how your area has been affected, but here in southeast Michigan successive storms this year almost flattened or âsat downâ shrubs and small trees. Problem now is how to prune them bringing back shape while beefing up branches. What do we do?
Thank you!
Hee Hee you are like my husband, i call him Edward scissors hands, wow big fella, leave something to grow.
great video! I just planted some bobo hydrangeas recently. this will be their first winter in my yard. Should I prune them the first year or let them kind of do their own thing for the first winter? Also, what is the correct amount of water to give these types of hydrangeas after initially planting? Thanks! your videos are very informative. Glad I found your channel.
Great video!! You're funny.
THANK you so much!! This is wonderful.
Hello Ann
I'm with Mary Wakefield. I know how to prune Annabelle hydrangeas but I pruned one hydrangea at the wrong time (I don't know its name) and it didn't flower. I also wish to know when to prune oakleaf hydrangeas. I just moved 6 large ones to my yard from the house next door which was going to be torn down. Unfortunately deer pruned 2 of my hydrangeas that I grew from cuttings. They were doing so well and got eaten back. They aren't dead but now I doubt that they will bloom next year. I hope I can keep the deer off of all of my hydrangeas and dahlias I want to grow this coming year.
Perfect I was wondering if I left the old school peegee hydrangea (I wanted it for itâs height) would stop flopping if I just didnât prune it but it seems like people say that will reduce the size of bloomsâŠso it seems I can best help support the stems next year by just giving them a judicious cut
Hi! Thanks so much for this video. We just bought a house that has a lot of hydrangeas that look similar to the ones at the beginning of the video. They need to be pruned but have started to get quite a bit of leaves. Should I leave them alone or try to prune them?
Very informative! Thank you!
Really helpful video
Very informative.
