Get an #1 d-man and move Rielly to the 2nd pairing don't have him on the ice for any d-zone face-offs and take him off the top PP unit. Zero threat from the point with his fluke 20 goal season. The guy has averaged under 8goals a yr since the 20. He is a #3 d-man and is overpaid for just having one ability, pass the puck to star forwards and pickup assists. A 4.5M d-man can do what Rielly does and might have some d-zone ability.

Tarasenko would not backcheck, Berube moved him to the 3rd line until he begrudgingly started working harder.
Kyrou was tied for the worst plus minus in the league and would not skate without the puck. Berube bumped him down and eventually had to sit him a game. Then Burbe gets fired as a scapegoat, and Kyrou gets booed off of home ice.

The most encouraging thing was how many times i heard "we want to play north". Watch evey team left they get the puck behind you and create turnovers and get chances immediately after the turnovers and repeat. Compared to were going to pass and skill our way through the neutral zone and play keep away until we get the perfect chance. Much more difficult to repeat. Sheldon figured it out but only after teaching the complete opposite for years. The boys are going to be fast and forward for Berube, thank god.

The core 4 are all about stats and fancy plays and getting their money even though they have won nothing. I don't believe they are about the team at all. Leafs management is at fault for the mess their salary cap is in. None of Matthews, Marner or Nylander are captain material at this point in their career. The culture needs to change and every player needs to be accountable for all aspects of the game and many of them including the core 4 are not. That needs to change and it might under Berube if he has support from Treliving and Shanahan and that is an unknown at this time. I would still look to trade at least 2 of Marner, Nylander and Matthews. It would dump salary and you can likely get enough in return or have enough cap space to bring in other players that would make you better a team.

One thing that I've thought about for about 2 years now that I don't hear discussed is the ages of these players. Going into the 2024-25 season Matthews will be 27, Marner will be 27, Nylander will be 28, Rielly will be 30 and Tavares will be 34. Now knowing Tavares is coming off the books after this year that still leaves the rest of the core coming very close to 30 where usually a player loses speed as this game is so fast now. Without a marner or Tavares trade next season seems like a wash as they won't have enough cap space to balance this roster out. I doubt anyone takes the Tavares contract for what hes worth now, and Marner may not waive his no trade so that means the core we keep are that much older.

Not keeping Lafferty was the stupidity and O'Reilly and Acciari wasn't offered a good contract right away because those two gave the Leafs the impression they were excited to be in Toronto and the Leafs thought they wanted to stay. Very few hometown kids handle it, that's why teams don't target local boys in the draft and thry don't flood their hometowns as UFAs. It's at least all the canadian cities. Habs only have 3 quebecers and no hometowners. Sens have 1 hometown player. Jets don't even have 1 manitoban. Flames don't have any albertans, let alone any calgarians. Oilers have 3 albertans, 2 are hometown. Canucks only have 3 from BC in their whole system, none from vsncouver, none are regular starters. Tavares is not an issue as a 2c or 3c, he's as good in that spot as most in the league... yes he is diminishing... So the problem is he's paid as a 1c. I have zero problem keeping him, he earned his deal (even though it was a mistake).... and will resign at money that works well for the team moving forward. Now saying that.... Dubas really screwed up in getting him... He wasnt needed, didn't fit, and we may still have Kadri and Hyman had he not signed Tavares.

The Toronto fan base deserve superstar players that actually want to win a Stanley cup, are willing to sacrifice their body/health to accomplish this..unlike the current overpaid "regular season dynamos" that wimp out come playoffs, claiming headaches, or a runny nose..give me a break..the reason Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Orr, Howe, LaFleur, Bossy, Crosby are revered as the greatest players of all time is because of PLAYOFF success, not regular season, sadly the current lot of overpaid Leafs will inevitably be forgotten like all the other guys that never one a cup if they don't produce, and succeed in the playoffs.. Failure in the playoffs is a team matter and not on a single individual. How is Tavares a local boy and Marner not? In fact in their insignificant playoff effort in the past 8 years it is Mitch Marner that has the most points. The fact is that you lot are trying to run a star out of the city. The whole team needs a new culture, a new attitude. Stamkos did not win his first ring until he was 31 years old, mitch is 26. Hope Berube can re-set our stars to see it differently and hope that other new players are added that can make a difference. If Marner can be signed for the same price as Nylander, he should be signed. I saw what Patterson did in Vancouver and what Pasta did in Boston (and they have much better players around them) hence I can not believe the witch hunt you guys are on.
