If anyone screwed the Leafs, it was Shanahan. To no one's surprise, he still has his job.
The one consistent factor with this team through the disastrous Matthews era, is Shanahan.
And the ownership
Exactly. The Shanaplan was a Shanascam. He said this team would win multiple Stanley Cups is a short window and yet he hired the worst GM and scouts.
It all started when Brendan Shanahan did not re-sign a 3 time Stanley Cup GM and replaced him with an OHL GM. The Leafs had a great young team in 2017 with tons of young prospects. But they needed some help on defence and I was hoping they would sign a big name defenceman. Instead they signed John Tavares, I was so disappointed, I just new it was the wrong thing to do. And I feel Lou Lamoriello would have never signed him if he remained with the Leafs. When they signed Matthews to a new contract they had to give him more than Tavares because Matthews is the best player on the team. Marner did then wanted money close to Matthews, but it was the hiring of Dubas and signing of Tavares that destroyed the Leafs salary cap structure.
👆
This guy is 100% correct.
@@user-qo1gk2kj3e Thank you!!
Guys like Brian Burke and Lou Lamoriello are simply behind the times unlike someone like Jim Rutherford who has seen consistent success for most of the last 20 years. Mentioning how many Cups they've won is a superficial and ineffective means of measuring a GM's potential in the current market. It's pretty clear that Shanahan is the root of the problem and not anyone else.
@@OKmoomer I agree, Shanahan is ultimately the guy who led the Leafs into this mess.
Damn thats actually so true. Im a habs fan so i follow the Leafs by default. When you put it that way Dubas absolutely obliterated the Leafs salary structure for years…mad.
Matthews avoiding all the smoke because he had one decent game. Highest paid player in the league needs to make a noticeable difference every night. At least Marner was playing
may as well not have been. Mitch was a ghost all series
Marner is the weakest link out of the core. The softest player on the team.
Bang on about Matthews. The most over-rated player in the NHL. Yeah, yeah about the 69 goals. But the entire Leafs strategy all season long was to set Matthews up. Hence his lame 35 assists.
@@tonylloy327 You’re not even a Leafs fan. Your jealously is clear.
Playing with what his wiener
Great insight. I saw the title and I didn't think it would provide a lot of useful information and analysis, but this is excellent.
1:55 marner was younger better and had more points then Tavares , how could he get paid less then him , leafs ruined the teams cap structure by adding Tavares in free agency . Will go down as an all time worst free agency move
Marner also put up more points than Matthews. And he still didn't ask for more. He asked for the same, and he settled for than those two guys made. The Narrative that he's greedy is pretty lame. Teams have internal salary structures if anything at the time he signed his deal he should have made 2m more per season than what he settled on.
Marner is overpaid by 2 million. That 2 million is the difference between keeping Hyman.
Dubas destroyed this team, not marner. Dubas routinely made garbage decisions, garbage trades
Imagine if leafs had someone like Hyman... 🤔 Oooof
Shanahan ruined the team , it's all about his ego . Dubas wanted to break up the core at the end of last season so Shanahan fired him
@@THEGDB wtf are you taking about. Dubas was dogshit. Guy traded kadri for kerfoot and guentzel for bunting lmao
@pahul79 they traded kadri because Tavares took his spot in the lineup at 2c , worst thing Toronto did was sign Tavares , they needed defenseman not the highest paid 2c in nhl history with literal zero history of winning
@@THEGDB dubas traded 13th overall to move marleau, traded kadri for kerfoot, let Hyman leave, let Freddy Andersen go for mrazek, protected Justin holl over mccann, traded 1st for 6 games of foligno. Guy was complete utter dogshit
I feel like people deliberately ignore the pandemic that froze the cap immediately after those guys were signed to the big deals. Had the cap grown the way it was projected to and a once in a lifetime event didn’t shut the world down, those deals would’ve been team friendly towards the end.
Leafs screwed themselves
The Maplelaughs got Louder .🤣😄😅😉😘
You're missing the part where Marner was signed _after_ Matthews. That's when Marner knew what the dollar amount should be.
94 pts 3rd year Marner had prime Tavares on his line. Tavares scoring 47 goals that season.
Prime Tavares... JT stats was padded by Marner being on his line... never has JT hit the scoring heights he did when Marner was on his line. AM34 can score... but Marner made him that much better.
The problem is with management. They were not forced to give him that contract.
I don’t understand everyone blaming marner for everything. I agree he’s overpaid, but when it comes to point production in the playoffs… he has the best average of the big 4 there.
if the franchise is dumb enough to pay him a ridiculous salary. why not take it
I think everyone forgets that tqvqres factored into marners large raise.
Oqrt of the entire pitch to hqve tavares come was that he would get to play with players like nylander and marner on his wing, hut tavares just watched a battle between nylander and dubas during his last yeah in new york
It was the Tavares contract that screwed everything up. Paying a point a game player $11 Million a year, of course his teammates, who are putting up the same amount of points, will want similar money. There was no chance at signing Matthews and Marner to bridge contracts, after bringing in Tavares.
I still don't understand how Dubas didn't see the effect the Tavares contract would have on the rest of the team.
Wasn't Hyman and Kadri Leafs at one point? Thank Dubas for the core 4 that get all the soe ray me and love their short hockey seasons and a long golfing summer in Muskoka 🙂
Mariner did not screw over the Leafs! The Leafs agreed to the deal and they gladly agreed to sign it. Terrible management
If Marner won't allow himself to traded. Maybe it is time to make the hard choice. To. "Let him go." Maybe you have to wait until the contract ends, and let him go. So you stick with the three or four top salaried players in Toronto. Make changes on the rest of the team for the next season. Then, "Let him go."
@ScottStenlund So it sounds like you have four high priced players on the Maple Leafs, who won't leave, So the GM will probably have to look at the other roster spots on the team, to make improvements. Trade or don't resign those players, and make changes in those areas.
@ScottStenlundultimately we’re all speculating, but I highly doubt Marner is willing to take a discount, lol
@@TheBirdyyeses I think Mitch wants to get paid fairly based on what his contemporaries make. Nylander being more productive this year might actually have changed where Mitch believes he is in that structure. Now you still have the horrible Tavares contract, and Matthews contract has gotten even more bloated so it's hard to say certainly but I don't think top dollar was ever Mitch's concern.
Maple Laughs are Classic
I doubt he waives his clause LOL 😅
I would take our second round pick this year back from the Islanders, or Philly's second round pick that the Penguin's own for Mikheyev. Even retaining 50% of the salary, that is way better than a buy out.
In Michigan the state income tax is between 4.5 and 5 percent. The income tax savings in Florida aren't worth taking several millions less per year dude.
It's incumbent on all Toronto media outlets to LOUDLY announce our desire to acquire the services of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, by outbidding all offers once they become available. The coach has little to do with it. The Toronto fan base deserve superstar players that actually want to win a Stanley cup, are willing to sacrifice their body/health to accomplish this..unlike the current overpaid "regular season dynamos" that wimp out come playoffs, claiming headaches, or a runny nose..give me a break..the reason Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe, LaFleur, Bossy, Crosby are revered as the greatest players of all time is because of PLAYOFF success, not regular season, sadly the current lot of overpaid Leafs will inevitably be forgotten like all the other guys that never one a cup if they don't produce, and succeed in the playoffs.. Bowmanville Dave
Every armchair GM here has already forgotten about the cap freezing for 3 years.
The boys at the top negotiated the contracts . Don't blame the players . Instant results are not the answer .
Could you imagine him in volumbus with Johnny Floater? That would be the most overpaid, no backchecking, no passion forqard group ever
Dubas screwed the leafs smh on NMC final year
Your video is 100% accurate, but your title is 100% wrong. It's Dubas who screwed the Leafs with his incompetent negotiations, NOT Marner.
the Wings to take Marner and Bert for Cherot and Copp ?
Marner has a no trade clause and Bertuzzi is a free agent who cannot be traded.
Hunter Dubas Keefe, the entire sentimental hometown group-think made really bad decisions. 'Hunter gets players', moving down in the draft, collecting late picks, none of which are in the NHL now, to leave Boeser and Koneckni for Vcr & Philly, take another small winger (mnr) just because he's from ONT, London, vs. new coach (Babcock) wanted a D man, could have traded down for #1 Dman Werenski & 2-way center Barzel, &/or huge forward Rantanen. Tavares signing was bad timing because his window was closing while the core four was just starting. Rational decisions, and the Leafs could now have 2nd line of Barzel - Boeser, with Werenski on defense, still have Hymnan & Kadri,
Great video! Dubas was a total idiot! He could have signed both Marner, and Auston for much less, but waited for the summer. Then he signed Tavares for 11 mil, and the rest is history. No move wth no discount. What a dork!
They didn't need to gift Marner such a huge contract. THe same things you say can be said about Mathews and Nylander and Tavares, and Rielly.... Can't blame anyone but Dubas and Shanahan, even if the big 5 disappear in the playoffs.
I was hoping the overpaying poor negotiating culture would depart with Dubas - then Treliving gives Nylander more than Panairin. Nope. Now it sounds like he is going to overpay Domi too, to ultimately, take ice time away from Robertson, McMann, Cowan. If we stopped pretending we were contenders and gave/give more ice time to our young guys, we may have actually been contenders by now! (Trever Moore, M. Marchment, Hyman to name a few, could all still be leafs without the core four over payments and over playing them)
Matthews is the best goal scorer since coming into the league...IN THE REGULAR SEASON. In the playoffs he's tied for TWENTY-NINTH in playoff goals since his rookie season.
he's also only averaged 7 games a year since his rookie year. So his xG60 is probably more critical to viewing the situation than the total goals
@@jaegerman66 .418 career playoff goals per game for Matthews. Someone else can determine G/60 in playoff games, but Matthews will be well behind guys like Draisaitl, MacKinnon, McDavid, Point, etc. He's a choke artist compared to those guys. Excuses aren't going to get the Leafs into the 4th round of the playoffs...for the first time ever.
People better thank Marner for setting up all of Matthew's goals !!!
If Marner leaves, I'd love to see him go to Chicago to help with the rebuild
Marner didn't play with Matthews for large stretches this past season and Matthews still almost scored 70.
Auston's tear near the end of the season was actually when Domi was feeding him
It's no secret that the Leafs would rather get rid of Tavares cap hit and keep Marner. You have to be careful trading a guy like Mitch Marner he's super talented excellent playmaker and can kill penalties the only knock on him is he is a little soft in the playoffs playoffs which a lot of skilled guys are before the Leafs trade Mariner I am sure they are trying everything they can to get Tavares to wave if they can convince Tavares to wave then Marner is not going anywhere
***NO*** Kyle Dubas screwed the Leafs and then ran like a coward as soon as he could because he knew he could not fix it.
Leafs management pooched themselves. Plenty of Opportunity to trade Marner and plenty of opportunities to choose not to pay him so much money. They blew it.
That's not Marner's fault.
He won't get more money next year, unless the Leafs sign him.
Marner is worse than Rantanen, Point and Matthew Tkachuk.
8 x 8 would have been fine. Point is Tougher than Marner.
Part of the problem is the Leafs think Matthews is better than he is.
The Leafs as a rich organization is flooded with cash. Naturally, they give out rich contracts freely. It's the league's fault to institute this salary cap to handcuff's the Leafs' operation.
Yeah, that's why the league has a salary cap...to "handcuff the Leafs". It's all about Toronto. 🙄
MLSE does not care about the playoffs. The corporation wants full seats in the regular season and an exciting team who wins by outscoring their opponents. You really can't say Marner did not help deliver this outcome.
The dollar amounts of the Core 4 contracts is not the problem it is the NMC. Not only does it tie the hands of the GM but also the coach.
Ofcourse they care, each game is EXTRA Revenue, and playoff success allows you to raise the ticket prices with less push back.
Of course they don't, if they cared they wouldn't have wanted to bring Dubas back, Shanahan would be fired, and they wouldn't have allowed NMC to be standard features.
Revenue from playoffs is just a bonus.
No no no the leafs screwed over themselves maybe you should have traded Marner before his no move clause kicked in
Can5 wait to hear how he screwes the leafs?? Lets hear it.
Tavares really screwed over the Leafs.
Silly take bro. All your complaints about Marner are management's fault.
Trade idea: Marner for Draisaitl
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you've gotta b joking right 🤣
Leafs would have to give up a lot more than Mitch to pull off that deal
Great idea hey maybe the oilers might throw in a few first round draft choices
Screwed the leafs ? The leafs are screwed. Waste of time organization.
This by far is my least favorite version of the leafs!
I remember when my team leaders had cojones,a backbone.
As for Kyle he is a guppy amongst sharks in the gm ranks.
As a devils fan i am kinda scared he may want to follow Keefe there. Which i hope doesn't happen. He is a good player but an absolute no show in the playoffs, and not the type of player the devils need at all.
Devils already have that type of player. A Bertuzzi type is far more likely
@@rickyaz8640 I would just try Halonen on Jack's wing. He seems like the type of player who has the grit needed on that line.
@ScottStenlund seems to me like Toronto fans can't wait to run him out of town
@ScottStenlund I could see that happen. Would be a decent pickup for the leafs
@ScottStenlund He seems like a guy that is willing to screw the leafs over. I don't believe he is gonna take a discount cause he genuinely seems to think his comparable is Matthews and not Nylander.
Marner in the playoffs is too small and gets knocked off the puck too easy when teams actually care in the playoffs don’t like his attitude either
Even though he has more playoff points than anyone else on the team.
aho>marner and for a bit less. brayden point way beyond better
Same with Matthews
Marner is soft
Marner didn't 'screw over' the Leafs. Dubas and Shanahan did. They overpaid Tavares and Mattthews by at least 2 mill each...and gave them every 'bonus' in the book. And neither of them make those bonuses if not for Marner. So, then YES, there was nothing out of line for Marner to demand what he demanded. He was just following the precidents which had already been set. It's *Matthews* you should be talking about "screwing over the Leafs". And even moreso now, as he now becomes the highest paid player in the league (but MILES from being the best player. There's at least 20 people ahead of him. INCLUDING MARNER!!
The number 1 goal scorer in the league is overpaid 😂😂😂
He's beating Ovechkin and if hé has a long successful career( Matthews) could become the greatest goal scorer of all time
Give your head a shake
@@t2av159Look at points. It's a joke.
@@t2av159He totally *is* overpaid. He's been perfectly set up his entire career with the Leafs to be the 'sniper'. And okay, ya wanna call him the the best goal scorer into the league...can't deny that 70 goals this year was pretty amazing. But Sam Reinhart has 65, and Zach Hyman has 67. And they're both still playing and adding to their numbers!!! Which *matters* , because ya gotta score when it counts to be able to keep playing! Which Matthews has *NEVER* done yet at any time in his eight-year career!!! And with Hyman, ya gotta ask why isn't he still a Leaf?? And obvious answer is, because they overpaid Matthews (and Marner and Tavares), which meant they couldn't afford to keep an *EQUALLY* effective goal-scorer at half the price.
Let’s not forget that mitchy feels like he is a god lol
