I totally get the demotivation part. After studying very hard in 12th grade, I got the second worst marks in the class, while the mfing student who was the biggest failure in school got the best marks because he has a fathee who owned 4 companies and some of his family works in the ministry of education. Mind you, this student was never good at anything, he came to my school when we were in 7th grade, and he could barely count to 10 and didn't know how to read or write. Also, no, he didn't have any mental illnesses, he was just careless about primary school his entire life and just kept on going out with his friends who were exactly like him. And even in this school, he still did the same exact thing, and got himself kicked out of class 90% of the time in school. Literally and absolutely did nothing, but the teachers were afraid of his father as HE was the one who was funding the school and 80% of their salary is just from his father, so they could never make him fail. Not only that, but when we were in 9th grade, our best 2 students got out of school and had to do the school year again because he changed their marks with his and his friends', the same thing he did to me in 12th. Literally the worst and least educated students got the highest marks, while me and my friend, who were the best in class, got the least 2. What's more surprising? I was the best student in math in the whole history of my school, which expanded for over 50 years, and I got the lowest mark in math while he got the highest. After that, I lost all motivation to study in my stupid education system, and idc if people think I'm a failure, especially when my school was a special school that only tests students based on how they think, not memorize

Honestly, I can agree with the lack of autonomy and room for passion so much. I have a passion for writing, specifically storytelling. Last year at my school, I feel like the writing curriculum was more free and creative. (it was a social studies/writing hybrid). We got to write stories based off of what we studied from that unit (ex. native tribes, colonial days, etc), and we learned crucial writing skills too. The only downside is that we had to take a lot of notes, but I remembered most of it.
This year, the curriculum is more restricted. We have to follow a set of instructions on what to write about and how to write it, compared to last year where it was free and creative. The only thing we do is write short essays, but we learn writing skills as well. I really want to improve my story writing skills, so I feel like this system isn’t that flexible to every student. We all learn about the same thing even if we’re not that passionate about it.
If you even made it this far, thanks for reading my ted-talk, lol!

This is all so true. Especially the part about the differences in the way people learn. School feeds everybody the same meal, and doesn't think about how some kids have allergies, or are vegetarian, or gluten-free. Personally, I have ADHD, so in classes like science were it's mostly lectures and memorization, I have trouble focusing, and especially staying committed to a class I couldn't care less about. My teacher didn't care to address these differences, and thought that if you were struggling, it meant you were a failure or on your phone all the time and not listening, not that you simply learned different (and I wasn't on my phone all the time!). Meanwhile, in classes like Drama, I love that class to death because it's interactive, it can engage me, and the teacher sincerely cares and tries to support all his students. What I'm saying is, that even in a class like Science, where I'm not really interested, if they had taught it differently, I totally sure I could've excelled. If it wasn't dependent on lectures and stressful burnouts over studying, every single kid in that class would've done well, instead majority of the class forgetting everything almost instantly, struggling to learn, and being constantly guilt-tripped by their teacher for not doing well. I love watching science videos on youtube (which taught me more than science class ever did), but I hate science class. Half the time I watch videos on the same subjects I was taught. And yet, I'll remember more from videos, and I'll be more likely to seriously think about if after, instead of just to pass a test. But in science class? I nearly fail. The school system needs to stop teaching and everyone the exact same thing, and making it even more stressful for the kids who need something else to catch up. They need to stop feeding everybody the same meal.

School has always felt like a box to me. Always doing the same things over and over, and it has really never ever changed. The school system is not taking notice that each student has a different way of learning and thinking, has different needs, and just needsssss to pay attention more to students mental health.
Like in my own experience, math has really never been my strong suit. I have had some teachers who have really helped me with math. Helping find what things help me, well, learn math. And it actually felt more like learning, then just the pressure of having to remember. While on the other hand, other teachers I have had have for math have not even really cared. And even if I ask for help, yes they may help me, but not recognize that I have a different way of thinking and learning when it comes to math.
So I just hope one day there will be change.

As an American, my high school junior year English teacher might be the only teacher I can remember who was able to lecture effectively. He allowed us to control most of the conversation, as well as introduce our own topics and perspectives. And I still remember all of the fun tangents we sometimes explored. I remember having to discuss the question of whether money could buy happiness, and I brought up that the question has a flaw, in that it could be asking whether exchanging money for items brings happiness, or whether just having money in itself brings happiness. (Everybody likes large sums of money in their bank accounts, but when they buy items that might make them happy, that sum diminishes by some amount.)

I'd like to see a follow-up video to this one proposing some solutions. I'm a teacher and just spent 3 weeks teaching in a school where students have an enormous amount of freedom, with great flexibility to spend time on what they would like. The result was a catastrophic amount of wasted time with students constantly on their laptops and not doing anything productive, really unmotivated students who lacked the capacity to sit through any amount of direct teaching, and were about 5-6 years behind in their learning.

well as a student i can say maybe a phew things my words are not great maybe you could try to do something interesting like asking questions mostly because they will get more interested if someone actually cares about what they think but is also possible that they never even want to learn this in the first place, idk what your class is but even if you are a good teacher and you have a good student that good student just might not be interested or is just bored because they have to sit on there asses for 5+ hours its kinda like the classic students being treated like lazy but you can try actually connecting with your students and maybe understanding that not everyone will care about it

    - remove the useless B.S and start teaching useful things
    - reduce time to 2:30 hours a day
    - reduce from 5 times a week to 4 times a week
    - least important subjects will be reduced to 30 minutes a week

    - P.E class will have 30 minutes a day, 4 times a week, and also will be intense so the students stay fit, but if you already workout you can skip the classes

Edit: Hi I wrote this two years ago when I was a dumb middle schooler. I am still getting replies to this 😅 I understand that what I said was not the smartest and I have changed my opinions, but I still share a lot of the same beliefs on the school system. Everyone comes from their own back round and has to fight their way in life, but in the end we are all human and we should all have equal rights and opportunities. (Which will sadly never happen) The school system is still very flawed in my eyes and has a bad way of distributing ideals. I believe that is why when I was younger I shared that opinion because that is how school expressed it. I hope the systems improve for future generations because the way things are right now are crude.

I was a front bencher in school but I personally blame myself for not going the extra mile to use my brain. I would focus on what was being taught in class, I would go home, study it and understand it. It would come on exam and I would simply recall the concept and answer it. The whole process lacks thinking, I never pondered on how to solve the problem more efficiently nor thought why it was solved that way. The problem is that the system doesn't stimulate a average student to question and think.

I like my social studies teacher because he’s real with us, we do discuss the meaning of quotes or random events but they’re more recent than most and we talk about how we’re going to 8th grade, are we really ready. He can’t do much but I feel like if they let him he’ll actually prepare us for life. This is so nicely said. You should make one about bullying. It’s not as simple as teachers make it out to be. Kids aren’t going to tell the teacher immediately. They might be afraid to because the bully may be threatening them if they do. I WISH it was as simple as teachers make it out to be. But the “Hey, that really hurt me inside.” phrase is what the BULLY WANTS. They want a reaction out of it. And the “Oh, I’m sorry. Can we be friends?” is so unrealistic I don’t even know where to start. People aren’t going to trust the bully immediately after they apologize. (If they even apologize.) You can forgive, but you don’t have to trust the person right after.

I hated school in k-12. I saw it as a punishment for existing. It felt no different than punishment for me.
I refused to do much in school because it already destroyed my love of learning, it couldn't have my love of reading too.
On top of that, I was the "gifted kid" (aka neurodivergent). I read my manga, watched anime, and drew in class because I was bored. I was on par with the 5th graders by the time I started elementary school.
In 10th grade, my chemistry teacher tried something different second semester. We could work at our own pace. I FINISHED the semester in less than 2 weeks. THAT'S how fast it needed to go for me to not get bored.
School was slow and far below my level. Because of this, I never learned proper study methods. In fact, I had never opened a textbook or studied a day in my life until I went to university. My textbooks always sat in my locker. I opened my locker once when I was required to rent my textbooks, and then after finals I had to ask the main office which locker was mine and what the combination was.
I met my best friend in university and she taught me how to study. I came to love school in university, but that's because I could choose my field of study, make my own schedule, and I had a lot more freedom and independence.

Learning is something that sticks with you for a long time, even for the whole rest of your life. School teaches things in a way that will be relevant only until a test is held, a test that doesn’t measure what you learned, but instead what you managed to memorize.
I say that as a B to A grade student (graduated last year), who never will remember 60% of what I learned in school, but still managed to graduate without repeating years or having to go through recuperating exams. And yet here I am, in college for a thing i am passionate about and having a decent paying job.
Good on ya, School system, you almost made my life's first 18 years seem worthless, but I now see the real abominatiom you are, a doctrination camp that cares more about putting useless shit in children's minds than treating them like human beings.

This is a great video and as a student ambassador some key points i've learnt are:
    - despite our wold is changing really fast, school isn't.
-the modern world values people who can communicate thier ideas, be creative and collaborate with others yet in school we are told to be quiet during class time and not talk.
-when you grow older, you need to manage your own time but at school we have no control and are told what to do. this won't help us grow and just follow what we are told to do.
-seating plan should be based on how good you are at the subject.
However I need solutions, complaining about it will only bring it to light but with no solution I can't do anything. So if anybody has ideas please comment for a better generation.

Fredrick J. Kelly, the inventor of standardized testing, said "these tests are too crude to be used, and should be abandoned." yet they sill use them like it's no big deal. If someone told me "hey man the operating system of that phone is crude, and you probably shouldn't use it" would I buy and use that phone? If someone told me "hey that car's engine is a primitive thing that won't last you more than a year" would I use that car and rely on it for the next 10 or so years?

We have specials too and for K-6th grade they are at a certain time and we all go to the same place as a class. But it is a little more free for 7-8 because we can choose what specials we want as an individual student. (This is for my school at least) I think that the Montessori way is better if you want your child to have a more free education so they can be prepared for real life.

One of my teacher: A teacher can't teach every subject at school
One of my classmate: then how can a student learns every subject at school?
One of my brain cell: ah here we go again
What happened next? You guessed it, that teacher spent hours talking about how we all are disappointment to our society and how rude it is to talk back to elder. Yeah that's how corrupted my school is.

In my school, in my Band group, Bottom set, Second set and first set classes are always a good ambience and learn nicely. In my English literature class. They even contribute ideas. And our top set maths class in my Band, students are well focused and work hard on the hardest maths topics like Algebra
