I'm 62 years old and a fan of good sci-fi. Tron from 1982 undoubtedly belongs in this category. For me the film is a milestone in sci-fi.

Can confirm, when this was released it completely blew our minds, it was all anyone talked about (graphics-wise) for months, and it had a significant impact on the industry, no doubt.

One of the best Sci Fi Action Adventure Movies Of All Time!
It was snubbed at the Oscars for Best Visual Effects as the Academy thought that CGI would be cheating rather than use practical effects.
It did receive a lifetime achievement for Visual Effects in 1992

This movie was so fun on the big screen!! My sister worked with computers when they were new and huge and ran on punch cards. Hard to imagine now, how we thought about computers back then.

Special effects were actually a mix of computer animation and traditional animation done to look like computer animation.
People have great difficulty copying it now because they can't copy the traditional animation part of it.

Thanks for posting. If I remember correctly Disney at the time really struggled with the content they were putting out in the early to mid 1980's. Tron was maybe lone bright spot during that period. Also, RIP to Cindy Morgan who passed away just a few months ago. She was a gem. Surprised she didn't go on to have a bigger career in Hollywood.

Fun fact: TRON is computer shorthand for Trace On. It’s an old BASIC debugging command.

Love this movie. It blew my mind when I first saw it as a kid, even more so than Star Wars. It sparked my interest in computers and games, and 42 years later, computers and games are still my hobbies. I love the movie so much that I have a framed poster in my living room.

Jen-Mom gets the big bonus score multiplier this round for recognizing Bruce Boxleitner! :D
You peeps really should check out Babylon 5 sometime, Bruce is one of the major characters from season two onwards. Also as noted by the other guy, the small bit part accountant program played by Peter Jurasik is also on that show and doing some absolutely master class acting.
There's this great documentary about the making of Tron, I don't know if it's on CZcams, but you can find it on the original DVD version of the movie and it goes through the earliest origins when the movie was just a concept for a new style of cel animation named "painting with light". The really mindbending stuff is that all of the "computer universe" scenes were shot in black and white - all the colors you see were painted in afterwards in post-processing, frame by frame. This includes character uniforms (which were pure white with black detailing to illustrate electronic circuits and whatnot) and also the sets themselves which were painted solid black, with white lines at the edges/corners.
To get maximum contrast between white and black, enormous amounts of lighting was used, to the point that you couldn't shoot multiple characters in-frame at the same time unless they were directly side-by-side (because of the very short focal depth), which meant many scenes were shot multiple times, once for each character, and then composited in post-processing using special techniques.
Some of the steps needed to achieve the final look of the computer universe scenes included each frame of film being blown up to an animation cel-size piece of film (still b&w) and having masks generated (by hand, for every single frame) that matched each character, oftentimes both positive masks and negative masks, allowing cels to be stacked together and then re-shot onto final film together with a lot of other layers for colors and special effects like glows, sparks and so on (which was all animated by hand by skilled artists btw), using multiple exposures per frame. The more complex frames had more than 20 individual pieces of film/animation cels making up the final image.
Some backgrounds were generated by early computer graphics rendering, using old-style mainframes that were just crazy slow by modern standards, and other backgrounds were actually hand-painted/airbrushed, to match the simplistic imagery the computers were able to generate. Two distinctly different software systems were used, one that used mathematical formulas to create curved surfaces and basic multi-faceted shapes - including IIRC the tanks, the light cycles, the overseer hovering enemies, Sark's carrier and the MCP. Another software setup was used for the solar sail ship sequence, and maybe some other stuff, I don't recall. :D
One of the concept artists for Tron was well-known comic book artist Jean Giraud, also known as Moebius; you can see his distinct art style for example in Dumont's rotating podium-thing and tall hat - he's the program the heroes meet in the I/O tower.
In all, it was an enormously complicated process (in the end credits you can see the huge list of names of Hong Kong university students who did all the grunt work of masking and coloring characters, tens of thousands of frames' worth), which was only ever used ONCE in history, for this particular movie and then never again. lol

Nice to see Jen recognising Bruce Boxleitner. Of course, now Jeff Bridges is the big star, but back then, at least in our household, Bruce was the big name. Primarily from Alias Smith and Jones.
"Input/output? Is that where the money goes in?" 😊 Nice, but that's one of the few cases where the movie actually uses phrases that make sense from the context, rather than just using computer jargon randomly. Input is all information that is fed into the computer from the outside, whether from keyboards, mouse, sensors or whatever, while output is all information that is sent out, whether on a screen, printout, computer controlled machinery or whatever. So input/output, or just I/O, is all communication between the computer and outside.

I work in IT, and a lot of us were inspired into that career path by this movie. Even though it was made in 1982 it was spot on predicting AI, cyber crime, how high tech corporations operate, even that request for a Chinese language file is relevant to tech today.

You barbarian how dare you have your pudding before you eat your meat, Imagine watching the sequel for before watching the original. Tut Tut Tut. This looked so amazing for it's time, a time when arcade gamers would have loved to be able to get into the games to have a true 3D perspective of gaming. One of the nostalgic things I like about rewatching this now is that the Bruce Boxleitner (Alan/Tron) & Peter Jurasik (Crom, the first Program killed by Flynn (Jeff Bridges)) both star in Babylon 5 (One of the greatest Sci-Fi shows ever) and David Warner (Dillinger, Sark) had a guest appearance in B5 as well. Great reaction as always & as always waiting for the next one.

I was 11 when this came out. I was right into arcades and computers so when the commercials started airing for this it looked amazing and I couldn’t wait to see it. Practically lived in the arcades for years starting back then. Went to see it on opening weekend and it’s been a favourite of mine since. Seems strange that Nick’s seen the sequel many times and likes that, but never bothered to watch the first part. Nice to see you both enjoyed it.

Love Troy legacy and thought they did a good job with updating the look! I'm hoping the news about a third is real!! Also check put the making of this movie.. it's nuts what they had to do.. on top of computer graphics they also painted on the film!

If you have a nostalgia bug for old 80s arcades, people have been opening new ones all over, in bar/tavern form that have a ton of old cabinets. There's one near me that charges a cover and then all the games are free. And all the games actually work.
