When they had managed most of Phase 1 I was thrilled (having read comics from the early mid 70s on)...but those heroes were all a question of SFX and film tricks to make you believe the Powers were possible. With Cap it is a question of whether the writing and acting can make you believe STEVE is possible. Waiting for the film I thought this was the most likely place for Marvel to fail, trailer #1 was meh; trailer #2 sold me tho...It contained the grenade scene and then Jones' reaction 'Still Skinny' I began to hope that they had got it right...
What a lot of people don't notice is that the only other person who runs towards the grenade is Agent Carter. That's why her and Steve see so eye to eye with each other.

Chris Evans did such a wonderful job playing Steve Rogers, you can really tell who the character is at his core, and what he thinks, feels and stand for! Chris gives him a real amount of earnestness and sincerity that doesn't feel fake or contrived, and turns what could have been a cookie cutter character into a layered one with his acting😊
Agreed. Evans as Captain America is the best version of the character I've ever seen. Even in the comics he's often a little two-dimensional, but the MCU version has a melancholy that really adds depth to the character.
The actor playing Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) is arguably best known for his iconic roles of "Mr. Smith in The Matrix" and "Lord Elrond of the Elves in Lord of the Rings".
And V from "V For Vendetta"! 😁
And don't forget, the spy who killed Dr. Erskine played Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit movies.

Seeing Steve jump on the grenade without hesitation, willing to sacrifice his life to save his brothers in arms that probably wouldn't do the same for him. That always gets me in my heart because that's heroism.

When Haley Atwell sees Chris Evans stepping out of the pod, and her reaction to him without his shirt on, was an actual reaction from her. She’s said that she hadn’t seen him before, and her reaction was genuine at seeing Chris Evans, ripped and shirtless.

@@Cardioligist I don't know about the rest but what I've heard (and I believe it to be true) is that the scene where Chris steps out of the pod, standing face to face with Peggy and _Peggy touches his peck for a sec,_ that was Haley Atwell breaking character. You can tell the nurse's reaction in the background as she's looking at Peggy instead of focusing on Steve who just had a major transformation.
@@Cardioligist, well, when she was doing the press tour for the movie, she’s the one that told this story on multiple chat shows, so I guess she could’ve been greatly exaggerating or lying, but I tend to believe her since she was the one that was there.

the scene where Steve jumps on the grenade is such a powerful moment that fully captures what makes a good soldier and a greater man. Honestly one of my favorite character moments for any movie ever.
When Steve jumped on the grenade, EVERYONE ran away EXCEPT Peggy. She was the only other person to go towards it, instead of running away.
I was gonna comment that. They were the only two running towards it.
I know the point they're trying to make but seems like the smart thing to do would be to run away.... I mean... if you have time to jump on top of a grenade... you should have time to get clear of the explosion. Grenades have a lethal effective range of about 10 meters. Shrapnel can go up to 200 meters away but is likely to do serious damage beyond 20 meters. The fastest man in the world can run 10m in 1 second. If Steve (and everyone else) spent just maybe 3 seconds running away from the grenade then diving to the ground... they would all be fine... and nobody would have to die. So... kinda just seems like Steve has a deathwish. Peggy I don't think does, but, I assume she knew that it was a dummy grenade. An older, wiser Steve later tells Vision "we don't trade lives." Maybe he spent some time after this incident thinking about how dumb it was to kill himself to save some guys that were probably going to be fine anyway.
Or... Maybe she knows the old guy wouldn't just throw a grenade to kill all of them?

There have been people do this in real life, they don't have time to stand there and think "the explosion won't kill anyone more than about 10 meters away, maybe I should just run away." They do it because their instinct is to make sure everyone else is ok.
Honestly, it's not rocket science. It is however, common sense. Why he CHOSE to do what he did I mean.
Cap is by far and away my favorite superhero, because he was a hero before he had any power and in fact was the "weakest" pre-superhero.
The beginning of the movie where a small guy with guts keeps getting turned down by the military reminds me of Audie Murphy. When the U.S. entered WWII, he attempted to enlist but was turned down by the Army, Navy and Marines. Finally when he gained a little weight and his sister helped lie about his age, he was accepted by the Army in June 1942. Being only 5'5" and 112 lbs, his company commander thought he was too slightly built for combat and wanted him to be a cook. But Murphy wanted no part of that and managed to stay in an infantry combat unit. Not only did he turn out to be an excellent soldier, he became the most decorated soldier in American history and earned the Medal of Honor at the age of 19.

To this day this movie still has one of the saddest endings in a CBM , imagine being frozen and then waking up and realizing you have been asleep for almost a whole century and all of your loved ones and everyone you've ever known are either incredibly old or long since dead , this is both a sad and terrifying prospect to go through 😭😭
It was a long time but not almost century, it was closer to half that (Steve was frozen for 66 years).

I'm not even sure I'd accept that it was reality. I'd probably think that I was dead myself and in hell or dying and my brain was creating some sort of nightmare scenario before I died. Just I just don't think I could accept it being real. In fact, my first words will probably be "This is the Bad Place"
Of all the original origin stories, Captain America was my favorite. The MCU just gets better from here. It's good that you can watch these without having them spoiled.
My favorite too! I recently watched someone reacting to The Avengers and she was asking why this “Captain guy” is so strong😂 Didn’t even bother with the origin

Yup... it's just sad that they ended the series after Infinity War. They had the potential to keep making really great movies and maybe even some tv series, but for whatever reason, they just stopped making MCU projects. It's probably for the best, though.

@@Zolar92 Loki completely destroys the MCU... and if you can't grasp how, then there's no point in beginning a discussion of the flaws of those other projects (and the much worse ones you didn't mention), because you'll counter with trying to minimize valid criticisms and try to assert that "that's just nitpicking," or worse, tell me to just "turn your brain off and enjoy the show," to just look how cool the effects are and how good the acting is, and don't think about how it completely contradicts and undermines the established universe and canon.

In the comics Cap fought alongside the original Nick Fury, Wolverine and Namor during World War 2 (but they didn't always get along). Also Uncle Ben was a big fan of Cap when he was young.
Cap fought alongside almost as many heroes during World War 2 as he did after he joined the Avengers. Besides the ones you mentioned, there was also Bucky, Black Widow, Human Torch and Toro, Union Jack, Spitfire, the Thin Man, the Destroyer, the Crusaders, plus several others whose names escape me at the moment.

At the end of the Hulk when Tony approaches Ross in the bar he says "you know General, they put that super solider program on "ice" for a reason". He's referring to Steve, but at the time we didn't know it
steve wasn't the only super soldier but i blieve he was talking about steve .
The scene where the doctor sits down with Steve and later offers him a drink is my favorite scene in all of the Marvel movies.
Welcome to the journey! I love the connection Peggy and Rogers have. The tension between the two and the lack of a payoff makes for a great story.
I have been lurking around your channel for a while, and I got to say, these Game of Thrones and Marvel movie reactions have been so awesome. This is why I started watching reaction videos. It's such a great feeling when you can feel the excitement and passion coming from the reactor for the film or TV show they're watching. Too many reactors think making some dumb comment or joke every 10 seconds is all they have to do.
You’ll learn a bit more about the Tesseract later, but I’ll summarize what the weapons they made do. Hydra was basically extracting the energy it generates to power their technology, so the guns they built are just shooting raw energy at people. They disintegrate when shot, they are just about as dead as someone can be. When Red Skull picked it up, something about the way he collided with it caused it to activate and opened a doorway above him in space, then dragged him to the other side. After the cube burned through the plane and landed in the water below, Howard Stark found it while looking for Steve which explains how Fury had it to show to Dr. Selvig in the Thor post credits scene; Howard helped to found SHIELD, Fury now runs the place.
That line at the end: I had a date. Just all the feels😢😢
Remember that all Marvel movies have 1 or 2 post-credits scenes, that gives clues to what will happen in the next movie.
Well, this film technically has one, but it's less of a scene and more of a "next time, on The Avengers...."

This is the one instance where I would say it's not important to watch the post credit scene. It's literally just the trailer.
Hugo Weaving was awesome. The facial expressions. The sinister delivery. So MANY frames that look EXACTLY like the character in the comics. The blast flash lighting his face is iconic. We got FAR too little "Red Skull."

Chris Evans is perfectly casted as Steve Rogers/Captain America. And I absolutely love Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes.
This is one of my favorite MCU origin stories. And I love that we got to see a young Howard Stark, before he meet his wife and had Tony.
Fun Fact: The part when Peggy Carter almost touches Steve’s chest, that was actually her portrayer Hayley Atwell accidentally almost touching his chest while filming the scene. Glad they kept that in.
Up next the end of Phase 1 with "The Avengers". And don't forget, there's a mid and a post credit scene at the end of that movie.

I love the fact that she doesn't talk alot in her videos! Alot of reaction channels constantly talk and talk over scens and dialog I'm like SHUTTT UPPPP!! They be talking over key points etc...but not this girl, she's amazing.

I got the same recommendation for the same reason! I don’t actually like reaction channels all that much but for some reason I eat up looking at newbies watch the MCU for the first time.

Great reaction! Captain America first appeared in comics during WWII, so I thought setting his origin story movie during the war was a great choice. In the comics Bucky became Cap's sidekick but died pretty quickly, so moving his death to the war made a certain amount of sense for the movie. Red Skull was one of Cap's original villains. I was very happy to see him show up in the first film.
Eh not to be that kinda nerd but Bucky dying was a huge retcon that didn’t come about until about 60 years after the fact. I actually love that the best moments in Caps comic book history are the result of major retcons inserted decades after the fact. (Being frozen and woken by the Avengers, Buckys “death” and reprogramming, etc)
That moment when the ridicule turns to applause when Bucky says "Hey, lets hear it for Captain America!"
This movie has some of the more emotional moments for sure thanks to Chris Evan's portrayal of one of the best characters in the MCU.

For someone that hasn’t watched the MCU before you are asking and thinking about the right questions pertaining to stuff like the Tesseract, can’t wait for you to discover what’s at the heart of it! The next film should be really interesting for you, can’t wait to see it!
The serum that they used is the same serum gamma radiator from hulk, but captain gets stronger by heart is not by getting angry like the hulk
The show Agent Carter on Disney plus takes place in the 1940s right after this movie if you want to know what happens to her.
Also the one shot is there as well and my head canon it is one year after the agent Carter series.
I loved most of that show, but I'm pretty sure Feige said it's not canon, nor is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or any "Marvel TV" project that Ike Perlmutter was involved in making. They tried to tie in the shows, but a lot of stuff doesn't fit and contradicts the changes that future movies made after/during the shows. But then again, the idiots currently at Marvel believe that She-Hulk is canon, so who knows... because that show absolutely CANNOT take place in the same universe as the movies do... the ONLY way it could possibly work is if it's set in an alternate universe of the multiverse and not in "The Sacred Timeline," which is another show that completely destroys the MCU, but I don't want to rant about the many ways it does that, lol.
@@stevealford230 I thought after they introduced the multi-verse, he said that everything done before was canon. Not sure if they all took place on the main timeline or not, but everything happens somewhere in a multiverse and who knows where things will land at the end of the multiverse saga. Still have my fingers crossed that they figure out how to incorporate all or most of the Marvel TV stuff. I'm sure not ALL because I doubt Feige likes all of them.
@@ldkinbote I knew he said that in regards to the Fox stuff (X-Men, etc), but I didn't think he included Marvel TV in that, just because he mentioned Fox and Sony, but didn't mention Marvel TV... and I know that he absolutely HATES Perlmutter and everything associated with him. But if he included Marvel TV in the retcon, that's cool.
But it's not like it matters anyway after the disastrously terrible double-handful of movies and series in the last several years. Deadpool3 will hopefully be great, but that's because Reynolds fired the writers that Feige tried to force on him and rehired his co-writers Wernick and Reece from the first two, whom Feige had fired and replaced with a pair of sisters whose only experience was making a cartoon about fart and queef jokes. I'm not kidding. Feige tried to take over with his idiot lackeys, and Reynolds took back control, so it should be great... but after that, we'll go right back to the same garbage that the MCU has been for a few years now.

In the 60's the Captain America cartoons I watched as a kid used to occasionally portray Red Skull as a head in the sky overlooking the carnage in the foreground during scenes of his aggression. Even at that age the symbology was clear.

You're gonna shed quite a few tears throughout your journey of the MCU
The shield in the Iron Man movies is just something a set dresser stuck in the background in one scene in the first movie, and of course the fans spotted it, and started wildly speculating, so Favreau gave it a more prominent role in the second movie, only to have Tony use it as a shim.
It’s not the actual shield, it is either Howard, or Tony’s attempt to recreate it, without vibranium.
I'm pretty sure ithe makeshift shim in IM2 is the original prototype that Howard used to model the shield before making it from Vibranium.
It was in all Howard's old stuff, so it logically follows that that's what it was, especially since it's incomplete and is just a flimsy mock-up (which I sometimes do with knives before I forge the real version: I make the design in paper, to see the shape, then cardboard or plastic to check the dimensions and the general feel of it, and sometimes I'll do a rough prototype in aluminum and wood to tweak the small details before I waste fuel and steel to make the real thing... and that's 100% what that flimsy shield appeared to be: a mock-up to test the design).
@@stevealford230 But Howard didn’t initially design the shield with the red-white-and-blue paint job. That was added later to match Cap’s costume.
@@donsample1002 we don't know that: we see that the test version had concentric rings, so it's a good guess that he already had the color scheme in mind from the prototyping phase, otherwise it wouldn't make sense to cast it with a pattern of rings. They serve no structural purpose, only aesthetics. That's just speculation, but it's logically the most likely. Howard knew what Cap's costume was before he made the shield, and he cast it with rings that could then be painted as stripes, and it wasn't painted yet because it was freshly cast. He knew that Cap had a shield, so he used ALL of the Vibranium that America had to make him an upgraded shield, and he upgraded the design of the shield to a round buckler shield, likely because since he used all the Vibranium and that was the biggest shield design possible with limited Vibranium. And that matches up with the comics, with changes in who made what, applied to the MCU changes.
The only other assumption you could make is that before Cap was a combatant and before he had his stage shield, the US government allowed Howard to use ALL of the Vibranium they had, the only Vibranium in the United States... to make a shield for absolutely no one... to put on a shelf and hope that someday somebody would need a shield, instead of using the Vibranium for the million other uses it has.
Obviously that's silly. So the ONLY scenario that makes sense is "Howard knows that Cap had a steel shield and that it got wrecked... so he got the US government's Vibranium and made a new shield specifically for Cap to replace his destroyed steel one, and he cast it with the intent of painting it red, white, and blue, just like the steel shield but with the stripes as rings."
The shield in IM2 is clearly a flimsy prototype that's only half-finished, because most prototypes are like that, just to get an idea of what the real thing will be.
I don't think 'prototype' is quite the right word. The shield already existed. I think the better phrase is 'mock up.' Once Cap decided the he was going to use the shield, Howard had to create a mock up to make sure it was going to look good. The things we saw in IM 2 was made for aesthetics, not function. That's why I say 'mock up' is a better description.
@@dansdiscourse4957 I believe I used "prototype" and mock-up functionally the same in reference to that IM2 shield, because I was (am) operating under the assumption that Howard made it before he cast the Vibranium version, during the prototyping phase, rather than afterward. The rings were cast into the unpainted version, so it logically follows that it was mocked up that way beforehand, and Howard had the busted steel heater shield when he introduced the Vibranium one, so it follows that the design/patriotic paint scheme was inspired by it (but reshaped to round) and was mocked up before the casting.
And it doesn't make sense that it would have been made after the shield was cast or after Cap went cold. The only time it logically would have been made was after Cap rescued Bucky, as part of the prototyping phase immediately before casting the Vibranium version and showing it to Cap. Plus, Coulson wouldn't have been excited about it or have thought it was of note if it was an afterthought that wasn't part of the creation of the real shield. Nevertheless, I used the terms interchangeably in this context because it was presumably made before the shield was cast.
Makes one wonder what would be produced by Erskines’ formula, but also powered by the Tesseract.
I really appreciate your theory about what happened to Red Skull. It seems thought through. I also appreciate your reaction to this whole movie, especially to those moments that showed “everything special about…Rogers”.
This CA film was easily my favorite Marvel film of their Phase 1 projects up until The Avengers.
I think people get upset/emotional about Captain America because he's the person so many of us wish we could be. He does everything for the greater good, nothing is done to make himself feel better or for his own ego. He just does what's right. Something so few people do these days.

Steve is my favorite hero from the MCU. Just all of his strength of character and conviction, and drive to do what is right above all else. Now, he's not my favorite _character_ in the MCU all around, but Steve is, unequivocally, my hero. And _no,_ I'm not going to spoil who my favorite character is, or even say whether you've met them or not. That would spoil the ride.

Uhh. Hugo Weaving plays Red Skull in this movie. His more notable roles were Agent Smith in The Matrix trilogy and Lord Elrond in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
Plus, Hugo played Andrew Garfield's Desmond Doss' father in biopic, Hacksaw Ridge. Garfield portrays Doss, who is only military medic ever won Congressional Medal of Honor during WWII without using any weapons because of his religious beliefs.

@ricardoortiz4870 Doss was medic during WWII in the Pacific Theater of the war. Mel Gibson made a biopic. Doss saved 75 soldiers during Okinawa (Hacksaw Ridge).
Now, I may be wrong about this but after all this time, I figured out that the Tesseract is a substitute for the Cosmic cube in the comics. It was also a source of unlimited power with unpredictable results.
As of now, there are at least four actors on this who have also appeared on “Doctor Who” - Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), Jenna Coleman (one of the two girls with Bucky and Steve at the Stark show), David Bradley (the old man guarding the hiding place of the Tesseract), and Amanda Walker (the “shopkeeper” in front of the Project Rebirth lab).
11:57 Stanley Tucci is utterly brilliant in everything he’s in, whether he’s playing a serial killer or Robin Goodfellow. So of course he nailed the exposition here.

10:29 - the other reason the general might want someone who obeys orders is that the person will be stronger, faster, tougher, etc, essentially a weapon. The General wanted to make sure the weapon would be under control and not betray them. Dr Erskine was trying to explain that the right person wouldn't need external control. And then Steve Rogers jumps on a grenade to save others. This wasn't a key battle, this wasn't even in Europe, this was a mere training location and Steve was still willing to sacrifice himself to save others.

If you enjoyed the character of Peggy Carter there is a TV series called Agent Carter which you should check out. I don't know if the series Canon to the MCU but that doesn't take away the fact that it's a good series. Also the gamma experience Dr Banner used on himself was the government's attempt at another Super soldier serum and the tesseract sample Howard Stark received from Steve Rogers was the basis for his Arc reactor technology. As you know that technology was incomplete due to the fact that he couldn't create the synthetic cosmic element of the tesseract or as its name in the comic books The cosmic cube. Until Tony use a particle accelerator beam to enrich the Arc reactor core to create his synthetic cosmic element in the Iron Man 2 movie.

Found your channel the other day. Decided to save this playlist for when you have more reactions done. And then I just decided to watch them all today and watch the rest as they come out (also listened to your music, and it's pretty good, hope you make more in the future).

Anyway, just wanted to let you know (in case you didn't know already) that there are things called One-Shots to watch. Agent Carter, Item 47, and All Hail the King. You can watch two of them now. All Hail the King you can watch after Iron Man 3. So... I guess you can watch it now.
Also, I hope you watch the shows at some point. And I don't just mean the Disney+ shows. If you want to experience the entire MCU, then you should watch everything EXCEPT Inhumans. Unless you want to torture yourself with that show. But I recommend against it.
If you want a full list of the shows released before they started doing Disney+ shows, just ask. There are also plenty of watch orders online for at least some of them (because there's some crossover with the movies here and there), but you should be fine to just watch them a season at a time and then get the context from commenters or the shows themselves.
Your enthusiasm for the MCU is infectious. I would be interested to know if you feel the magic still exists in Phase 4. Many of us feel that special storytelling quality didn't survive past Phase 3, with the exception of one character franchise which still seems to retain it. (it's ironic because that character storyline isn't even owned by Disney, which might be a clue) But would love your honest take when you get there.
You should watch Agent Carter, there's a really heartbreaking story of Howard trying to find Steve.
I started my MARVEL journey in 1968 with Cap and the Fantastic four. I was 9. Cap has always been my guy, and Chris Evans... is everything I ever hoped for in how Steve Rogers is portrayed. It can't be done any better. BTW.... ALWAYS watch the final trailer because it gives you insight to coming MCU films without giving anything pertinent away! Great reaction

At this time, 1940's, the Brooklyn Dodgers were seen as the common man's team, universally loved in America and the rest of the world. In contrast, the Yankees and the Red Soxes were seen as elite, loved in their cities but not always outside of it.

We love the grenade scene because it show that Steve has the kind of character and altruism that we wish we all had. He's a genuinely good person.
I remember watching this with my dad when it first came out. I had played Marvel videogames that had Captain America involved in before I'd seen it and I remembered thinking the one thing they have to get right in this film is his heart.
You have to believe in Steve. That's why he's the Captain.
As soon as he said "I don't want to kill anyone. I don't like bullies" I knew it was a winner. The rest like the scene with the grenade was perfection.

This is absolutely my favorite phase 1 film, followed by Thor, then the original Iron Man. Most people definitely prefer iron man, but it feels like a pretty standard issue action movie while Thor and Captain America are designed to suit their protagonists.
Thor is treated theatrically with the story playing out like a Greek tragedy. Captain America is an old WWII propaganda film.

These films are written, directed, and performed to be inspirational. Your emotional reaction to Steve willing to sacrifice himself was genuine, but intended by the director. It was a scene to make the audience believe in Steve Rogers. What kind of guy he is. It establishes that Steve Rogers is the kind of guy that inspire people to follow him.

The heart strings? The tears early in the movie? I've said it a few times before. People expect to see actors in costumes running around and being superheroes in these movies. But what we got was humans being heroes who just happened to wear costumes. The overwhelming rollercoaster of emotions through the wins, losses, and sometimes shocking default events portrays humanity so well we all have gotten teary-eyed one/twice/more throughout the MCU movies. The unbelievable MCU writers knew their subject material and and the actors knew and studied their characters providing an unparalleled view into humanity - who liked to dress up in costumes.

The Captain America movies are the best movies in the MCU. Absolutely, hands down.
Steve Rogers is one of the best characters in the MCU. He's not my favorite, but he's in the top five easily.
Agent Peggy Carter is an awesome character too. As soon as she punched Hodge she became one of my favorites in this movie. 😀
A lot of characters get name dropped in the future, even if they're dead. The Red Skull gets mentioned in another movie even though he is effectively dead. Doctor Zola is name dropped though he's dead in the modern era, Howard Stark gets name dropped though he's dead in the modern era, so the same will go for Bucky. Even the rest of the Howling Commandos (the group of guys who were recruited by Cap to be his 'team' in WWII) are name dropped in the future too.
If you like Agent Carter then try watching the TV series Agent Carter.
The end credit scene is a trailer and if you don't watch movie trailers then best to miss it.

If you love psychological thrillers watch Shutter Island! Very cerebral film. One of my all time favorites. Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Directed by Martin Scorsese! Insanely good movie!

In the hulk movie, the serum the guy (abomination) took for the first time was basically the same serum that cap has which is the super soldier serum. Also the hulk has a bit of that serum along with some gamma mutated aspects of it, thats why he transforms.
