The Original "M" SUV - 2010 BMW X5 M Reviewed - A Worthy Range Rover Alternative?

  • Today I am driving BMW's first 4x4 M car - the original X5 M. A lot of petrolheads were outraged when this car debuted, but it seemed to set a trend which shows no sign of going away for fast German 4x4s - but how good was Bavaria's first attempt?

Very pleased you have reviewed one of these as I have been looking at old cayenne turbos, this and the ML55 / 63 AMG. The ML55 seems to have the most reliable engine (provably) but as an all round package I think the X5M wins. This also has the all important drop down tailgate.
There's always a lot of negative comments on the point of these trucks. If you want some ground clearance, capacity, high up driving position and a very powerful engine.. why not? That's why people buy them, not because they want to use it on track days.

While the X5 is probably one of my preferred Toff-Roaders, they're one of those cars where when something goes wrong, it's a hideously expensive go-wrong, the engines are reasonably good if not brilliant, but things like air bags (suspension) and body control module faults are rife and i think probably a reason why you don't see so many for sale as the repairs for those things can be prohibitively expensive

The "stock" or "separate" exhaust note of the X5M is under all criticism, who wants their 550hp X5 sound like a tuned inline 4?
A X-pipe added to the exhaust, which connects the left and right bank cylinders ,makes the exhaust a lot better and it actually does sound like a V8 after that simple mod.

I have a E61 530i with 160k miles and I have spent a fair bit on repairs surrounding gearbox, suspension, wiring etc. But it is wear and tear on an old car with high miles. Premium cars are subject to wear and tear like everything else. So the more u have, the more to go wrong no? But I've found once you do the big jobs you don't have to di them again so it is what it is. I can't imagine the E70 X5M being too different

They are beautiful in their own way, because they don't look so menacing and rude, just more refined and less squarish.

It's a car that feels like it's constantly fighting itself and is a master of nothing but ok in all departments. These can be fussy with wheel alignment but reliability is fine with the usual BMW issues of this era although an X5M would be an entirely different proposition i'm sure. Great review.. Pricey though for an old car getting older.. Also the costs of repairs on these big, heavy older SUVs will be high.. Tyres and brakes will be every 10,000 mile replacements and 20 inch tyres and big discs will be £1500 a year costs (at independant garage prices)...
The neighbours will burn down your example if you run those exhausts early in the morning or late at night..
Is the interior also looking too dated no? I think it is for a £20,000+ vehicle..

Have to disagree about old Cayennes. In my corner of Europe, the only Cayennes that seem to make it past 300.000kms are either the base models with the 3.2 or the 4.5 Turbo models. And there are a lot more of the latter ones, which also boast higher mileages. And because right now there is proper winter with snow, the supply of the 4.5 and 4.8 turbo models available on the market has depleted considerably.

Happens all the time with these second hand big SUV's. People buy them and have 19, 20, 21 inch wheels on them and the tyres are so damn expensive people don't really include that as an expense in advance. Especially winter tyres in large sizes are stupidly expensive. People buy these things used and can't even afford to keep decent rubber on them. Ha ha ha, "community pharmacy", excellent. Whenever I see one and can communicate with the driver, I always ask them how much a gram is, I get some funny looks. I get some angry ones and I once had £10 a point as an answer, but back in my drinking in the pub days, this was the community pharmacist car of choice. I've not heard that name before, it's brilliant and I will plagiarise it, sorry.

One has to wonder why BMW cant build a M engine which is reliable to save their own lives for the last 15 years? I wonder why that is... One theory I have is that they have gotten infected with "race car disease", which means they err on the side of performance instead of reliability. Perhaps a worthwhile tradeoff for a race car where hundredths of a second matter, for a street car its total madness.

With the F10 M5, M6, X6M (and current versions of those cars) and f80/82 M3/4. It is because of the engineering. The cheapest solution is the one they take. That’s is why they want more than mclaren for extended warranty on a m3/4 or m5.
