Another pretty girl falls a little bit in love with the best tenor of his generation singing one of the most iconic love songs in history. Great stuff
yeah, it looks like it happened at about 2:30...LOL...and almost certainly by 7:50
@@MarkPuckett lolz 9:34 is when its really over and you can see the swooning has completely taken effect.
Bobby Hatfields voice takes wing and soars to the heavens to sing with the angels!
Yep the young ladies seem to all swoon over
the history of this song dates back to the mid 1950's for a movie in which the main character is in jail singing to his love and hoping she will wait for him
This song is from my generation. I am now 75. I could listen to this song all day long. I would consider it one of the best ever❤
Surely one of the best live one man performances ever.
I concur!
I'm 70 and agree completely. I daydream that I could sing like that too. I wish I could sing it to my wife.
they sang this 60 years ago
Hello, l am 51 years old, I am of a different nationality I like in another country, I know America only from films and books, I have read a lot before, I first heard this song from the movie "ghost" in the 90-s recently I have watched this film several times again, it touches to the depths of my heart, after why did I watch this performance by Bobby Hatfield, an excellent singer, and I perceive the song as dedicated to the memori of Patrick Swayze, Listening to the song tears appean in our eyes, we are all people, we are all the same, no matter what nationality and where we live, Pease and good to you,Singerely from the Western Kazakhstan city of Uralsk🇰🇿🤝👍
I was 16 when I first heard this song. The man I eventually married played it for me. He passed listening to it 53 years later. Forever in my heart❤
My condolences for your loss
Wow😮, so you two had a magic....thank you for writing this, I can feel you ❤
My condolences as well, may he requiescat in pace.
No autotune, no nothing. Just Bobby Hatfield, his voice, and a 1965 technology microphone.
Well, that and a pre recorded orchestral backing track, because there clearly isn't a whole band playing on the set.
Just a little mice
@@mnomadvfx I'm pretty sure the Andy Williams Show had a band. The Host had at least 1 gold record (Moon River) and an Orchestra leader (Col;in Romoff, followed by Dave Grusin).

Without doubt, the finest live vocal performance of all time.
Hard to think of a better one. This was lightning in a bottle. Would have been a privilege to have been there. Thankfully it was recorded.
@@davy_K They knew it was going to be great. They asked the audience to clap briefly as Bobby started and not again until he was done. The House Orchestra did a top notch job too.
The studio band does a perfect job as well. Andy Williams attracted only the best, and that's exactly what he got that night, and with the best possible singer of the times.
Without a doubt, this is the best live solo song of all time!!❤❤
@@davy_KYour comment was the best!
I saw the Righteous Bros in Las Vegas in 1999, when they were much older, and Bobby still absolutely NAILED this song. I was so impressed, I cried.
Brother, I am watching and listening to this and I’m tearing up all totally!
Everyone cries.
It’s his TRUE talent and CLASS. Two things most in the industry don’t have anymore.
The absolute truth always comes out overflowing in bubbles🫧 🫧 🫧 ❤
No, you’re just old.
His mother was there for the show and he was so nervous he wound up giving a live performance that left Bobby owning this song forever.
No doubt…For-Ev-Er!!!!!
Neither of these men ever had a voice or music lesson in their lives. This is pure, raw, unadulterated talent.
❤ wow..thank you
How the fuck do you know
Maybe not voice lessons but he was very active in HS and Jr College productions. He was also a star athlete with the potential of being a pro baseball player, in addition to being class president.
Bold and underline on raw its ridiculous
Live in the NBC studios for the Andy Williams show. No auto tune, no gimmicks just an orchestra, a mic & one fantastic singer. The audience in these shows are quiet during the performance because of filming for TV. The Righteous Brothers were in place of the Osmonds on that show. I had a crush on Donny until I saw this performance. This song was played a lot by military guys (who were shipping out to war) for their girlfriends/wives. It had a lot of meaning for them.
I am proud to have known both of these guys, been to their homes , and heard them both sing many, many times this, song is my wife's favorite song ever, and Bobby sang it just for her at her birthday party, in 1983!! It's a sad day now that Bobby is dead and has been for so long now!!
Real singing
Did it. Become a big hit after this show or did it take a while?
@@joannewsome5202Yes a big hit here first , then of course again when Ghost came out in 1990 I think it was.

Even the younger generation, like you, can appreciate the absolute artistry and magnificence of his voice. This song was huge in my youth. Imagine, if you will, how it affected especially the females back then. It was a go-to when returning from a date and listening to records with your girlfriend. You are honest and sincere with your reaction. That is appreciated by all of us. Thank you.
IMHO quality in art has no age group.
That's why young girls still swoon over this song, and why so many film reactors on CZcams seem to concur that a black and white film like 12 Angry Men shot mostly in a single room with no FX impresses them so much compared to the big budget action films of the modern day.
The only thing that depresses me about watching these reactions is when all these young reactors say "oh that sounds so good for the 60s", or "that looks so good for the 70s".......
Just uuuuuugggggghhhh.
Only 38 and I'm already starting to sound like my grandad here 😂🤣😆
@@mnomadvfx lol. I know where you're coming from, mnomad. And I agree with your first statement 100%.
As a tenor i thought this would be a piece of cake. The big moment is a swift switch to falsetto to a reasonable E5, and the hard parts are the G4 Mine sustains which are. high for a male but not incredibly impossibly high unless you add the B4 Glissando. But no. The amount of support and placement you need to even acceptably pull off this song requires top notch support and relaxation, its insane. Singing this took me years and even then the amount of sensitivity and dynamic control in Bobbys singing make him unsurpassable by anyone who can even hit the notes correctly. Just astounding talent. Thousands of covers and he still reigns supreme
I think that in this performance his range is: D3 to G5 sharp
@@HGWTPaladin little research and I found out that his vocal range was B2-E♭6 and that top note was a G5
I thought his vocal range was spot on.
I really appreciate this take on it from someone who understands the challenges from the inside. Well done!!
Bobby absolutely owns this song, no one else even comes close.
Bobby Hatfield....my favorite male singer of all time. RIP Bobby, we miss you!
A singer, a mic, an orchestra, a perfect counter-tenor voice, and his parents seeing him sing in public for the first time. And oh yeah, millions of people watching him on TV. Welcome to real music.
I never tire of watching the ladies react to the Righteous Brothers.
The fact that a song 58 yrs old sung by the AMAZING Bobby Hatfield who passed away 30yrs ago can still evoke such emotion speaks volumes to his amazing talent. Thankfully he, and this song, can live on forever. Rest in peace Bobby Hatfield.
it was 20 years ago November 5, 2003 (aged 63) that Bobby died, NOT 30 years ago. RIP Bobby Hatfield

One of the best live performances ever recorded!
This song was written in 1955 for a movie called "Unchained". Many artists have recorded this but this will always and forever by Bobby Hatfield's. Bobby passed in 2003. RIP Bobby. No auto tunes. Just a young man, his talent and a microphone. Live performance. No second chance.........and.........his parents were in the audience. The Righteous Brothers were referred to as Blue-eyed Soul.
"The Righteous Brothers were referred to as Blue-eyed Soul"
Sounds like Dusty Springfield - another great vocal talent of that generation.
OLD SCHOOL, BABY !! Perfection without studio BS, autotune or even ear monitors... Saw them live hear in Chicago... mind-melting for anyone with ears !!
BLUE-EYED SOUL is what this style was called. A silky voice, like warm honey pouring into our ears and hearts.
And i have heard that this was the last song Elvis...sang. not without reason.
I think it’s amazing how he barely moves his body, he seems completely relaxed. It’s all about that incredible voice.
Widely considered the finest live performance of all time. Sung without autotune or manipulation, to his mom in the audience. A Masterpiece.

This tune has to be a contender for the greatest love song ever written. It is so classic and timeless and eternal. People have been swept up in it for decade after decade, which is what great music does- it makes you Feel.
The Incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the "Righteous Brothers." Done (Live) 59 years ago in (1965) on the "Andy Williams" television show. Unchained Melody written for the (1955) movie "Unchained." The music was composed by multi academy award winner Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. This live performance has become the quintessential version of "Unchained Melody" of them all. Since then, orchestras and singers have used this arrangement by the NBC Studio Orchestra ever since. No one has sung this song better than Bobby Hatfield and no orchestra has performed this song better than the NBC Studio Orchestra of the Andy Williams Show. Together they created the greatest live performance of all time. Brilliant!
The studio audience was cautioned to refrain from clapping during the performance. They knew what they had coming, and Bobby (and the orchestra) delivered a magical performance.
Yes, they did! It was a magical performance that will live on for generations to come.@@edhorton2766

That performance might just be the greatest recorded live performance by any male soloist. Certainly one of. No auto tune. The sound clarity is outstanding from that recording. Just an amazing voice. I saw that show live on TV when it happened back in the mid 1960s. Still moves me now. Timeless.
Great reaction, Rachel! This, IMO, is one of the finest live performances ever made. Thank you for showing the lead-up conversation before the song.

I've watched many female reactors listen to this song and they all have that same dreamy look in their eyes. It's a look most guys would give their life for and, on occasion, we do get it from our significant other. It heals all wounds and makes it all worthwhile.
Welcome to the era of "Blue Eyed Soul". What a voice! They have quite a catalog of great music....back when things were live, and no auto tune.
I'm nearly 80, and I remember Al Hibler and the Platters doing this beautiful song. When Bobby did it, he took 100% ownership. I still get goosebumps when I hear it today.
Bobby Hatfield sings into counter tenor range. Bill Medley is a baritone and they sound like a perfect match. Thanks for this reaction. This song is timeless because of his beautiful voice.
I have watched this video hundreds of times and what gets me the most is that grin at the very end. He knew he nailed it even better than he hoped.
Over 50 years and Bobby still makes women swoon.
Beautiful without autotune or any effects. Just clean, pure and raw.
This is perfectly sung and one of the iconic performances in music history. Hundreds of thousands of women (like you!) still swoon to this video. This is Bobby's song- period.
Bobby is probably the best contemporary tenor of his time. His range is incredible and control sublime... noone will ever do this song better than Bobby
I love his shy little grin at the very end! "I did good!"
oh yea, the lip bite was so cute
It's more like...I KILLED IT. 💯‼️‼️‼️
The lip biting thing was a nervous habit.
You've got to keep your girlfriend away from guys like that.
❤the best ever live TV vocal of all time. Full stop! Rest in strength Bobby. Your perfection is our inspiration
Two things ...... hearing this always gives me goosebumps. Also the fact that someone can sing like this and the effect it has on people is truly amazing.
your youth is showing
During the interview, you can hear nervousness in Bobby's voice (1:06), especially when when he says, "...we've been known as that ever since" with a loud exhale. But, just a few seconds later, none of that is apparent as he starts to sing seemingly without effort and with perfect control. By the time he finishes, that bite of the lip is his expression of well-deserved satisfaction with the perfect performance he knows he gave.
video performer Bobby also had a cold which added to the breathlessness. But yes he was very nervous too.
I was 13 watching when this was shown and I'm now 71. Brilliance is timeless!
Same here, but I’ve always thought it was on Hullabaloo that I saw him but this is the one, my sisters went bananas
Bobby Hatfield live performance .
The Andy Williams Show-
Episode #4.5
Episode aired Oct 25, 1965:
Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
*In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
* The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
* This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.
Spector claimed a lot of credit he didn't deserve. He was an undiagnosed schizophrenic and a horror to work with at times.
@@robinfra52
I agree.
However, Bill Medley still says despite what Spector has done to him and others, that he was a genius producer.
I'm 75 yrs old and remember Bobby singing this beautiful song on the Andy Williams show in 1965. This dual had many great hits when they came out 1964. You need to hear their other hits. RIP Bobby! We miss hearing your beautiful voice!!! Bill is the tall one!❤❤❤

the thing about this song is it was first used in a 1955 movie titled "Unchained", music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. Several versions were produced in the 50's. Bobby Hatfield had a band before meeting Bill Medley and he sang this song back then. Unchained Melody was actually a B side on a 45 and the DJ's liked it so much it became a hit, this version is also featured in the movie "ghost". Bill was the producer on that song when Bobby recorded it.

About three years ago I got 1000% addicted to reaction videos & reactions to this performance is what did it…to see the wonder & joy in younger people’s faces as they realize that the older music was amazing (I’m not putting down new music, im just trying to explain simply, & bluntly)…but younger guys & girls both love this …the guys question their life choices & the girls swoon & pretty much literally fall in love every time…idk, reactions to this, for me, will never get old & will never lose their magic….& this song, & the older music, will never lose its magic. Great reaction, thanks:)
So true! I love watching the younger girls swoon over his voice. A couple of other similar videos of this has the girls commenting on how “handsome” he is and how dapper and classy he looks! It was a different time for music back then.
One reason I love old Motown and the like, the guys would dress and act with class!
Same here. My favorite part is always when their eyes bug out when he hits that last note.
Love, love, love it !! Your eyes told the story and you seem to hang on every note and word. Bobby was a true counter tenor and used no falsetto, the final notes were his head voice. He uses 21 note across 2-1/2 octaves, in this song !! Brilliant !! Love you and your reactions !! You are beautiful too !!
Thanks, Ray! This live version is astonishing (yep, you've heard it before.. but not like THIS).. story goes that he was nervous b/c his MOM was in the audience.. I'm sure she was proud! Bobby so amazing.. no straining or screaming on those high notes.. just perfection and breath control... (and of course, no "autofune" lol)
there's a part where it seems like he just adds an extra "really" in the middle of "I need your love" and turns it to " I really need your love". The way he does it is just beautiful and you can only do that if you know exactly what the song is about. and you can sing like he does :)
I caught that, too. It gives the lyric an even more personal touch - he's able to really immerse himself to the point you believe he wrote this love letter himself (which I thought he did until recently).I also think it wonderfully strange and original that Phil Spector thought he could "embellish" any rendition by Bobby with that "wall of sound" for the recording of it; ..can't see Bill or anyone else thinking it could get any better, but most of the radio listeners/record buyers only heard that gigantic/historic addition. It's really a ballad for all time with or w/out any accompaniment, isn't it?(Only a few voices could handle that "wall", IMHO.)🙋
Really? 🤣
@@nomadscavenger Specter didn't produce the recording, Bill did & his name was on the original pressing of the record. Specter was busy with another project/singer at the time.
I've heard this a million times already. And I still got chills!

This was my parents' song. My dad was a US Navy fighter pilot for 27 years, and they spent half their married life apart (dad at sea) until he retired in 1977. I know they are still dancing to this, holding each other, in heaven.
That's what makes Bobby Bobby. Magnificent entertainer and yes gorgeous.
Bobby Hatfield had an amazingly beautiful voice. RIP Bobby
Staggeringly brilliant vocal performance !!!
We learned this song in our high school chorus class. I loved it so much that I would sing it sometimes to my fiancé because she really liked it too. Now I never do karaoke because I’m way to shy, but when my wife and I got married and were on our honeymoon at Jay Peak ski resort, they had a Karaoke night that my wife told me we should go to. When I saw that Unchained Melody was on the list, I sung it to my wife. It was beautiful, but the first and last time I have ever attempted Karaoke.
Thanks for reacting to this. It brought me to tears and ushered in a flood of fond memories, and I’m only 44. 😅
Still think this one of if not the best live singing performances of all time...a phenomenal singer...r.i.p Bobby.

Such an amazing song, and Bobby just knocks it out of the park! My parents introduced me to the Righteous Brothers when I was a kid, and I've been a fan ever since. Thank you for reacting to this, and I'm glad you were able to appreciate his talent!!
If you want to check out Bill Medley's voice, I would very highly recommend 'Soul and Inspiration' and 'You've Lost that Loving Feeling', both amazing songs by the Righteous Brothers. As great as Bobby is at the high notes, Bill is every bit as talented with the low register.
If you pay attention to his neck and head you can tell that he's not straining to hit any of those beautiful notes which is amazing to me 👌
This song was still very popular when I served in Viet. in 1968 (Tet Offensive) with both those of us serving in Viet. & our loved ones (wives, girlfriends, etc.) back home. There were a handful of songs that every band that performed in Viet. had to play & this was one of them. "The Green Leaves of Summer" was another one, i.e., "the green leaves of summer are calling me home."
Just remembered another Viet. favorite, "The Green, Green Grass of Home". "Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree. As they lay me neath the green, green grass of home." A little dark humor while in a war zone? Or, facing a possible truth?
🎵. The greatest live vocal performance ever! IMO
Bobby adds almost jazz riffs to the song. I’m so glad this was filmed so countless generations of music fans can enjoy its magnificence. Truly a performance for the ages. 💝 Happy New Year! 🥳🍾✨
My dear young Lady, this was 1965, 25 years before autotune or any electronic trickery was invented. You either had the talent or you didn't, there was no cheating. No one sings this song like Bobby Hatfield, NO ONE. The smile on your face is the same as I've seen one women's faces for 50 years at least when they are introduced to this song. Your reaction is priceless to me but Honest and genuine. Listen to their song "Soul and Inspiration". I think you'll love it. My Wife and I danced to this song at our wedding in 1971, and we danced to it again on our 50th anniversary party in 2021.
Bobby was a great singer, a tenor voice! It’s an all time classic that’s been covered by a lot of singers. I think it’s possible that you may have heard Robson and Jerome’s version of it because it’s a lot more recent and was a big hit all over the world, it was a great tribute to Bobby!
Nice rundown and reaction, great to see your appreciation for this 🌹
Yes, the journey he takes you on while singing this song is so beautiful and emotional!❤
If you’re getting into this era of music you should definitely check out Tom Jones’ “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” from his Dusty Springfield Show performance in 1967. Absolutely phenomenal vocals!
Bobby Hatfield had the most beautiful voice.
I grew up listening to these love songs during the 60’s and 70’s. We were so spoiled now that I look back. Even though many have covered this song , this is Bobby’s song for eternity. Bobby was also called a life size Ken doll with his blonde hair and blue eyes. RIP Bobby Hatfield.
You should watch Bobby Hatfield sing Summertime. It will blow you away with the amount of Soul he adds to it.
I enjoy your genuine, heartfelt reaction to a grand old song.
The most beatiful song ever writen and sung
Bobby sings 100% from his romantic Leo the Lion heart. No one can or will ever sing this sublime song any better! Ebb Tide is also one of his solo recordings which is somehow deeper and speaks of a mystical union with his lover by the sea. Both songs are genius works of art and the most romantic you could ever hope to hear.
You hit so many of the points about Bobby’s ability to take this song and make it memorable and unforgettable. His voice is one in a million for range, control, the velvety sound and vibrato. Take a listen to some of his other solos; Ebb Tide, Somewhere, Sentimental Reasons, Only You, to name a few.
Nobody can sing this song like Bobby!
this song has been covered by dozens of people, you probably heard one of them, or maybe his studio version in the movie Ghost. None of them IMO are as good as this live version, it's the absolute best version. He shows no sign of strain to reach any of those notes. You want to hear his voice in a completely different arrangement, find his live version of 'Summertime' here on YT--amazing!
That was a bit of stage play when Bill said he didn't think this would be a hit. Neither of them did... this was Bobby's solo and they recorded it as an album cut, it was never intended for release as a single. Bill actually produced the studio version and played piano on it. It ended up on the B side of the single 'Hung on You' and the deejays liked it better....
Bill loved the Song but Phil Spector (the producer) only wanted his "Wall of Sound" music on the records. That's why Bill did the work for Bobby on this one.
@@amcasanave Actually, Bill produced all of the Righteous Brothers albums ... Moonglow, Philles and Verve (MGM)
Glad you enjoyed it. Everybody is going to chime in now to suggest you listen to "You've Lost that Loving Feeling." However, if you'd like a song that features Bill ("the skinny one"), "I Just Want to Make Love to You" is the go-to.
Another great Bobby Hatfield song is Ebb Tide. His vocals in that are truly special.
Such an effortless looking performance. And with parents in audience too!
Nobody can touch Bobby on this song, he owns it. From the grave he is still being discovered and young reactors all over are dropping their jaws. His parents were in the audience , his mom had never heard him sing professionally...he nailed it for her. You're being swooned girl HAHAHAHHA
Bobby is caressing the listener with his voice! He holds you and kisses you with his manipulation of his vocal chords! It really is magic!
How about just saying he's a great singer 🤣🤣
This is absolutely beautiful... he really got a lotta people to tear up on this including me. When I first heard this it was on my car radio and the announcer warned his audience to pull over if we were driving and I'm glad I took his advice! Because it was a new song and he'd just heard it himself for the 1st time. He said afterwards that he didn't see it coming. My GF at the time was with me and both of us were balling our eyes out.
This calls for reaction to the duo singing: You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'! 🎉 🎤 🎤 I never seen this intro into their name origin!
Bobby Hatfield -- A performance that still moves the hearts and touches the souls of generations that were yet to be born at the time.
And for generations not yet born. 🙂
What you are witnessing, that really touches your soul it that he is using his embellishments to emphasize the meaning of the lyrics not just to show off his abilities. Most modern signers throw all kinds of screeching vocal fireworks all over the song just because they can. This is a master class on the proper use of technique to convey emotions.
Yes... Bill's the tall one. He had a great duet with Jennifer Warnes for " Time of My Life", from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Bobby had one of the greatest voices ever heard.
You will never ever hear a some sung as perfect as this. When music was music!
