The Righteous Brothers where the term blue eyed soul came from. This was Bobby Hatfield gone way to soon.

Miss his voice
Yeah, and then they listen to the worst examples, and ignore the ones that can hold a candle to the old stuff.
Pure tallent. Live, no retakes, no autotune. Best rendition of this song ever!
And it has been said he was suffering from a cold.
Always thought this was the best rendition, no other version compares I
and it is live, no do overs!
Your reaction was great! Love this song as well.😊
@@TexasRose50if he’s suffering a cold that’s incredibly impressive, reminds of when Phoebe got sick on friends and had the husky voice and she was upset when she lost it
I’m nearly 70, and that song still gives me goosebumps. Pure gold.
My mother is 73 and this is her favorit song.
@@corneliusantonius3108 If I recall correctly, Elvis also sang this song… but this version is the best.

Yes lol my oldest is here because of this song lol
LOL!!! No doubt.
🤣🤣🤣 true dat!
Favorite comment EVER! 👏👏👏
He was a nervous wreck singing this as his parents were in the audience and he had never sang in front of them. Amazing, amazing talent. No auto tune, no faking. Just pure talent.
Bobby was NOT a nervous wreck. He had a headcold and of course had a bit of nerves. His Mother was in the audience and she had seen him sing before just not on the nationwide, very popular Andy Williams show. A big deal in 1965. It was an incredible performance and will live into the future another 59 years as long as music lives.
@@CjJohnson-kf1oz I don't dispute anything you said about Bobby Hatfield's incredible performance. But he suffered from serious stage fright all his life, which sadly led him into drugs to cope. You can hear the quavering in his voice as he spoke here, and in the first line of the song. But when the audience applauded he settled right down, and soared the rest of the way as only he could.
@@danieldickson8591 you are correct. I over reacted I guess. Can't even recall what may have pushed my button, other than being a cranky old lady.
How do you know that stage fright led him into drugs?
No auto tune. Live. No gimmicks, just pure talent.
I said it earlier, but what a fantastic score by the band as well. Everyone nailed it that night. That was the first time he sang live with his mom in the audience. That slight bite on his lip at the end was because he knew he absolutely killed it.
No retakes, either.
The real story of how they got their name is charming: They sang in a club in El Toro near Long Beach where many black marines came to hear them. Back then if blacks liked something, the slang term was RIGHTEOUS...and of course, if they liked a man, they called him BROTHER. So they sang BLUES fantastically, and these marines yelled out, "That's RIGHTEOUS, BROTHERS!" And that's how they got their very "black" sounding name which went with their very "black" sound.
Thank you for a 99.99% accurate telling of the tale. You are the one closest to the truth as told by Bill Medley .
I was a young married when this song was popular. Every time I hear this song I think of the young men who were serving in Vietnam. Many were wondering if their girl would wait for them. There were some women who did mot-the guys on the battlefield got “Dear John” letters. I waited for my man and I am so glad that I did. We just celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage.
Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing
People like you are the reason I still have faith in Humanity. Thank you 😊
NO COMPUTERS... NO SYNTHESIZERS...NO LIP-SYNCING... PURE TALENT AND PURE LIVE VOICE!!!!
A voice for the ages....
he sings in heaven with the angels now....R.I.P. Bobby!
So right. I'm not sure where we go but the house band is going to be amazing.
U should do “You’ve lost that loving feeling” both bros sing in that one…Blue eyed soul, this was live and unedited….crazy how good they were!!!!
Side note trivia....one of the backup singers on that song (then unknown, but later *very* well known) 17-year-old girl named...Cher. Truthfully, she's talked about it numerous times.
@@ChronicExcessiveManliness what backup?

One of the greatest live vocal performances in television history…no auto-tune or gimmicks…just a fantastic song and superb arrangement by Bobby and immense vocal talent [a gifted Countertenor]…it’s even better than the superb studio/record version.
The Righteous Brothers pioneered what came to be called “Blue-eyed Soul”
and the fascinating thing is, we thought this was the way it was. No big deal. I guess you had to grow up with music like this to appreciate the casualness of how we accepted these performances.
These 60s singers sang from their souls. All of them were so talented back then. Black, White and everything in-between sang those songs with heart and soul. We should all listen to more of it! Thanks for doing this reaction video!
Yes,they should. Everything from the crooners thru Motown
He actually had a sore throat at the time and was really nervous as his mother was in the front row watching him perform for the first time. Pure talent.
Remember this was LIVE TV back in 1965. RIP Bobby.
Still to this day can not believe someone could have a voice that pure, and with that much range without a single bit of help from any kind of technology...No one will ever do this song better than Bobby did...give em all the autotone/pitch correction and filters and software you want, and they still won't come close to how Bobby sang it live...the man had the voice of an angel and he was gone way too soon.
60 years later I still get chills from that voice. Man sang like an angel.
one of the best damned songs ever recorded in my humble opinion.
the song is absolute! could a new remake with some more bass make it better? Just a more full back round sound? Don't have to touch the vocals at all.
Love the profile pic!!

It’s great to see a new generation appreciate how good music was. Not auto tune, no multi takes just pure talent.
The Righteous Brothers were The Pinnacle of Blue-eyed soul
They started it -- the phrase was created for them. 🎵
That, youngsters, is called pure talent.
Quite simply one of the greatest performances of anyone anytime or anywhere.
I agree 💯
Bro. 🥱
AGREED. No auto tune, just straight good ole singing.
Reportedly, he had a cold, too, but his mother and fiance were in the audience, and he didn't want to disappoint them. If you listen closely, you can hear a bit of nasalness in his voice, but still nailed it.
We, in the '60s and '70s called this "Blue Eyed Soul", live, no autotune, and it's rumored that his mom was in the audience. This song was made popular when the film "Ghost" was popular. Beautiful, isn't it?
That is why he bit his lip at the end
Bobby had a cold while singing this live but his parents were in the audience and he did his best for his mother. Great success! Best live performance in history in my opinion.
When Bobby left using 2003,he left us a small trea
sure trove of recordings and some truly great videos like Summertime and Somewhere and Bring it on home to me (on this he actually had Bill smiling).
Bobby had it all; an incredible entertainer with humility and more charm than Cary Grant.
OK, JayT... In the sixties, this was THE song at our teen dances. It was a 'Ladies Choice' and the girls would hold you so tight. No A/C in those days and I can still taste the girls' hair spray. In later years it became an anthem in Nam about bein' away from home and wonderin' if our girl was still our girl. You'd hear this comin' from a hootch at night and it would bring tears. Welcome Home Brothers.
Bobby dedicated it to you.
Thank you for your service, sir ❤️
Salute to you Brave Soldier!
@@AmyErffmeyer-ld1uh Wasn't as much bravery as it was survival but Thank You.
Yes, it has just been harmonized and all by ear, no electronics, no software that puts the voice back into the tonality, all old-fashioned, no headset, just PURE TALENT.
Actually a soloist can’t harmonize with himself live as it is impossible to sing more than 1 note at the same time. When Bill sings with him, then they are harmonizing together.
My husband is a musician and the way Bobby did it is definitely harmonizing
@@DianeAccettullo-yr1ht One voice cannot harmonize alone.
@@Ididnotwanttojoin Bobby is harmonizing by the way he by the way he follows his notes.

Not the first version of this song, but the best. Bobby owns this song and always will.........
A romantic song. Not a derogatory or demeaning word toward anyone. We need more songs like this.
It gives me goosebumps every time I hear this!
This was recorded by 670 singers world wide including Elvis. It will always belong to Bobby. They were known as Blue Eyed Soul and trust me every colour woman was in love with these two. Hear them together and if you listened to them them finish talking which was less than another minute. You would know them better.
What's even more insane about this particular performance besides his vocals... he was sick with a cold and was extremely nervous because his mother was in the audience watching him for the first time live. This song is timeless and hopefully will be played for generations to come. ❤
Quite simply one of the best songs ever sung his vocal range is incredible this song next year will be 60 and it still sounds as brilliant today in 2024 if you agree let me know😮
One of the very few singers that can hit 6 octaves.... and he did it with no auto tune, no studio, live.
Nothing to compare this with.
Ever.
Quality.
Blue Eyed Soul at it's finest. Bobby was nervous because his Mom was in the audience.
Oh! That stanky look on your face at the very end of this clip when Bobby hit those high notes was PERFECT! (It do send chills, don't it?)
Remember, that was recorded in the mid 1960's with none of the modern day auto enhancers etc...etc... that was pure voice talent. Bobby Hatfield was one of the greatest male singing voices of all time.
His mother was in the audience. First time she saw him live 😊
Bobby was not only performing live, on national television, with no auto-tune... he was also performing in front of his own mother, who was in the studio audience.
I love the smile on his face after he hits that final high note. “Nailed it!!”
TALENT!!! what most singers of today are missing!!!

You have just been well and truly Bobbied. This was pure live talent. NO auto tune, NO lip syncing, no prerecording backing track. This the level of talent that is missing in so much stuff around today with very few exceptions. Then if you couldn't sing properly from the off with out fancy studio stuff you remained the singer doingthe rounds of pubs and clubs. This is why the greats of old have remained greats.
the greatest live vocal ever.
Oh how i loved this man singing this song, real natural talent, no autotune no gimmicks just pure.
Most women can't hit the high notes that he did. He was incredible!
Theyve tried, but no one could come close to covering his song.

Blue eyed soul, man.
never heard a better performance than that. Just absolutely killed that song. WOW!
Glad to see a whole new generation treating themselves. Timeless.
These WERE the days when singers were ACTUALLY singers. Instead of all this SCREAMING out your lungs and calling it singing. Before all the audio adjustments are made in the recording studio. KAREN CARPENTER is definitely THE BEST FEMALE VOLCALS of her time. The absolute clarity and range is still not matched today.... WITH NO YELLING OR SCREAMING she still gets it done. I have to say...... its FANTASTIC that you are taking the time to put these type of talents back into the light where it belongs... THANK YOU!!!!!!
i just LOVE listening to Karen!
In 1980, Karen did a medley duet with the legend that is Ella Fitzgerald... pure brilliance.

I get what you are saying as a lot of modern artists use editing/auto tune to make things sound better. But come on... There are still plenty of great singers out there that do it well live
Righteous Brothers were truly amazing.
Nice reaction. Bobby was a uniquely talented countertenor. No wonder there's millions of people out there who appreciate this man's fine delivery to this very day, some 59 years later.
His "Ebb Tide", "Stay with Me Baby", "Summertime", "I love you For Sentimental Reasons" also showcase his talents. Of course there's also "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "Soul and Inspiration" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" which he sings with his "brother" Bill Medley.

Bobby Hatfield live performance.
The Andy Williams Show-
Episode #4.5
Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965:
Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
*In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
* The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
* This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.
Thank you...thank you...THANK you! I love this research. Sometimes I might mention a few things about music, actors, eg. verbally to my friends and many don't really give a damn!! June ( from Maine ) Not to this extend, though. This is enjoyable.
Was the version of Bobby Hatfield's performance on The Perry Como Show where he concludes on a high note ever released as a audio only recording?
@@friendofirwin
It was The Andy Williams Show.
And no, it wasn’t studio recorded. The high octave ending was first done on this live performance.
I vaguely recall that Bill Medley had said that Hatfield liked the acoustics in the Williams studio and decided to perform that ending.
That's the Andy Williams show - my bust

"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" was the most requested song of the 20th century.
I can still see my parents dancing to this when they got married in 1989. My dad died in 2020, God rest his soul, shortly after their 31st anniversary (35 yrs total together). My mom still tears up every time she hears it.
My mothers favorite song, Rightious brothers are rightious.

Stunning - all live, no autotune. You need to hear both brothers together, singing "You've Lost that Loving Feeling". Pure class. There are a lot of people around today who were conceived to the sound of the Righteous Brothers' songs. BTW, the guy who introduced them was Andy Williams, also a great singer - one of those voices that makes a difficult melody sound as easy as taking a walk.
and that. young man, is what we call..."singing"
Best voice ever he was born to sing this and much more. Better than any singer today
Credit and talent when it's due... and for how OLD this is... from way back then.!! The quality of the microphone and the speakers... seriously... this song is absolute in it's forever-ness.
