Volvo 850 BTCC ex Rickard Rydell - Outside Actions & Exclusive On-Board Multicam!

- After 5 long years, I've been able to see again a rare Volvo 850 BTCC, specifically ex-official Rickard Rydell model and currently used in competitions. You can't imagine my immense pleasure and joy to put a large number of on-board cameras! I have immensely thanks to the owner and driver Simone Bellucci for the kindness and his group of friends and mechanics who welcomed me and my friend Davide458Italia with great enthusiasm! What about the car? Well, it's the Volvo 850 BTCC that in the hands of Rickard Rydell won 1998 British Touring Car Championship. In 1995 season Rydell made 13 pole position in 24 races! Strangely, the season of the 850 series began in collaboration with TWR in 1994 using the Estate version that behaved fairly well. Since 1995, TWR passed to employ a sedan version with good results until it reaches the BTCC title in 1998. The car is equipped with a 5-cylinder 2 litre engine that develops about 290hp mounted very low and back in the passenger compartment, almost in a central position. 6-speed sequential gearbox and wide use of carbon fibre everywhere. At that time the TWR took part at the F1 championship so you can see a reversal of technology in this Volvo race car. Spectacular the pneumatic lifting system. I want to thanks my friend and CZcamsr Davide458 Italia ( / davide458italia ) with whom I collaborated for the video. Enjoy also the exclusive onboard and outside Multicam!
Buona visione!

I can still remember being blown away by the sound of this car at Donnington and Oulton as a kid - the best era of BTCC
Yes, it's true, the best BTCC era.
Totally agree!! My all time favourite however, was Cleland’s Cavalier ❤️, reason being is because in a Vauxhall head and love the Redtop engines, still play with them today. This Volvo is a brilliant car too. Such smart looking motorsport cars back in those days!
Rydell, Simoni, Winklehock,Menu,Cleland...just to name a few. The legends...ahh really miss the good old days
Cool but the wagon or estate version was sub zero.
Can't beat that 5 cylinder sound
Wish I had a 850. Has to be the best sounding engine ever. Miss BTCC and Volvo and Rickard so much. Part of me died at the end of that era 😢
I understand you. The Volvo and all the cars of those years were magnificent: Audi A4, Vectra, Laguna, Accord, S40, etc. The best time for touring cars. I follow the modern TCR championships, but they are light years away from the beauty of the races of the 90s and 2000s
Love how insanely low the engine is to reduce the centre of gravity. Brilliant engineering!
Absolutely, the TWR technicians had done exceptional work.
That gearbox whine, don’t think I’d ever get bored of hearing it 👌
Yes, you're right 😄👍
Obviously Straight cut, x trac , 4 shaft, with drop gears, theres plenty in it to make obscene amounts of noise.
I remember watching this car live on tv as a teenager, best era of BTCC.
Yeah, absolutely 👍
Ah WOW! That mighty sound of five high-revving cylinders makes me winding the clock back to Oulton Park 1995.
I like your nice comment; you're right; in this Volvo, there's all the nostalgia of the 90s BTCC 👍
This and the 850 Break STW BTCC from 1994 are already iconic machines from the peak of Volvo racing era. Just brilliant. 🇸🇪
Yeah, you're right 👍
850 Volvo, Totally underrated car, I've got a low mileage 95 T5 manual wagon, It's just sailed through another MOT here in the UK, It's a keeper!
I always liked this car very much; I wouldn't say it was underestimated, in the 90s many of them were sold all over the world. Nowadays, they are little considered as youngtimers; only the T5R seem to interest.
Got a p80 v70 glt with a 5 speed. Fun as hell
how is it underrated :0? It is the most famous car in BTCC (the wagon version of course whic was later banned obviously for being too quick since it was a wagon lol)- I think its OVER rated almost. Even though I wont lie I do own an 850R >.>.
I’d say the first gen V70R is the more underrated one.
850R and second generation V70 R are very much recognised (deservedly so, I must add), but the first gen V70R is seldom talked about.
One could compare them to the R32-34 skylines where the middle child so to say is the least talked about one.
THIS and Audi S1 Sport quattro from the 80's were the most insane at the time they were racing!
Pornografia quel 5 cilindri! Bravi ragazzi ;)
Grazie Ste, non posso che quotarti ;-)
I don’t speak Italian. But some things just translate so well.
5 cylinder pornography 😄
Wot hy seit.
They had to cut a wedge out of the cylinder head and put an offset spacer in to allow for the required angle of intake runners. Massive amount of work. But it did the trick.
Volvo struggled to get more than 240hp at first..... then with the additional wedge, 320+
Yeah and they didnt cut the wedge out at the combustion chamber face, they did it higher up ! Designing and casting a new head would have been easier and cheaper, but the rules said you had to keep the production head with the valves in the production location !
Actually watched a vid on this you are 100 percent correct
@@p1fly The one from Car Throttle by any chance? ^^

This is the best sounding engine of all time! ❤️
I love the 850, all of them had 5 cylinder engines. That is a nice sound to behold
Oh yes! 👍
That car needs a more flowing race track with long straights so the driver can really open the taps and let the car do what it was built for. Rickard Rydell became the 1998 BTCC champion with the Volvo S40 though, not the 850. He won races with it granted but not the championship. From what I can remember, the reason TWR switched to the saloon was because the rules had changed to allow front splitters and rear spoilers and the engineers at TWR figured the saloon would be the better choice to use in the campaign
out of all the super touring cars ive seen, volvo is my favourite car ever.
Yep, also one of my favorite too 😉👍
even in 2018, its still one sexy car.
Absolutely 👍
i think rydell should be reunited with this car.
Were my love of Volvo's start. The 850 Super Touring
We are all Volvo BTCC fans ;-)
Would like to note that it was the S40 Rydell won the 1998 title in =) and a little fact that not many people know. Apart from the '94 BTCC Estate which is in the Volvo Museum, TWR converted the estates used in 1994 to Saloons for the '95 season and used again in '96.
How much does this horsepower motor ???
дима Гусев around 280 PS if I'm not mistaken
@@user-mj6xy6ow7v Around 280-300BHP
Now that's a touring car! I remember going to brands hatch in 96 as a kid. I'll never forget the sound of those super tourers and hardly believing they were based on my dad's family saloon! BTCC is still good today, but the 90s super touring era was something very special indeed which I'll never forget and always miss!
You're right, I talked about this last week with a guy who owns a Volvo 850 and he too, like us, grew up looking at these cars when he was a boy. The 90s and early 2000s were the best times for BTCC, many different cars, all beautiful and competitive, the races were hard-fought, and there were very strong drivers. Today's BTCC is very far from that era; I no longer follow it with the same interest.
@@Italiansupercarvideo I agree! I haven't followed it closely since the early 00s when the supertouring era came to an end. It had everything. Masses of factory teams, world class international drivers with characters, simple racing regs and relatively wide open technical regs. Yet it's success was its own demise. Grew too big and expensive for a production car based series and eventually the bubble burst. Pretty sure it will never be seen again, especially nowadays where the automotive and motorsport environments are very different to how they were then, restricted by environmental sustainability, excessive safety and not so much of a consumer market for performance cars. However, despite all of that, I did catch BTCC at Donington last weekend and I have to say the racing was superb and with a very healthy grid! I'm looking forward to the next round!
@@timoschneider7030 It's nice to know that your BTCC flame has been lit again since the last race you saw 😉 For the considerations you have written, you find me in agreement, and I could not add more. We were lucky to have grown up with these cars. I'm sorry for the younger ones; they don't know what they missed
Forever Volvo 850 ♡♡♡:-)

😅👍
The 850R estate and Saloon cars were superb cars to watch when the BTCC was worth watching !! Great drivers, great cars, great history. I miss those days.
right words, I agree with you👍
BTCC was broadcast on TV in Sweden and I sat glued and watched every race. Was by far the best touring series with awesome drivers.
I like how unique (if I could call it that) and different it sounds from the back (compared to the front) when it flies by.
😉👍
intake noise brother you’re hearing the other have of the induction it’s so cool
Had an 850 R wagon that I drove on the street and feasted on GT Mustangs and then raced a 122 Amazon club racing. Volvo were a car for the masses .
I love the Volvos of those years, especially the 850 R, it was a beautiful car and finding one now, in good condition and with a manual gearbox is difficult, the prices have risen a lot. The vintage Amazon model is also very nice 😉👍
I'd love to see the engineering behind it the radiator ducting, coolers, engine mounting etc
Yes I am ready, my Volvo v70 r plus . Volvo for life, safety.

I had a metro once! Enjoyed throwing it into corners was a fun car to drive. Was so enthralled by that engine and transmission howel that I almost didn't see it :-)

Oh, yes 👍
i need to build a replica of the wagon version 850 here in the us one day im a huge Volvo fan :)i had a S60 R for a while and what a machine and that 5 cylinder was amazing sounding
Do it! Could be a great car! ;-)
t5 engines are absolutely king when it comes to the sound department, not a lot beats it. I now own a 1JZ and still pine after the t5 note like my old 850/c70 t5's had.
My dad already has a wagon. But I believe this is a t5. I have the 1997 wagon.
What scale will your replica be..or have you built it already?
I'm keen on the 850 too..scale model and also the 1:1 version.
Scouting around to get one in good nick(parts availability..etc.)Time will tell.
Do share your experience... 👌
Great sound, nice car!
Oh yes 💪👍
I absolutely LOVE the air intake duct! I suspect this significantly increased power due to its ram air effect?
I think your guess is correct 👍
Really it’s not a ram air effect with this being a turbo motor. However it is allowing cooler air and more of it on demand which in turn IS more power. If this was a carbureted motor with an air ram then yes at higher speeds it would then force the air into the carb, however the gains from that are an illusion as it’s simply doing the same thing his air duct did, cooler air CLOSER to the valves to be used than hot engine air. That’s why compressed air super chargers haven’t become mainstream. The air is forced behind the butterfly valve and used NO outside air delivering crazy psi/cfm of air at zero or close to and the calibration to regulate motors and fueling from hot to shot is very difficult but the company’s doing it are coming up with 600-900 shots of reliable power ONCE all the bugs are worked out.
@@bt4291 I don’t believe this engine is turbocharged, it’s an inline 5 2.0l Naturally aspirated engine. You can clearly see the air duct being bolted onto the air filter covering the throttle bodies @ 1:30
True that. I’ve never seen a performance Volvo non turbo but I read the requirements for the race bracket. You are 100% correct that turbos were a no no. Fun fact they used the wagon only because Volvo had no sedans and they didn’t wanna wait. So they used the wagon and found they could put more down force on it because of the roof apparently so this vehicle had amazing advantages in the turns and the dude who drove it came from go cart racing so it was a winning team. Thankyou for clarifying that for me.
I am from Uruguay.
I love this car. I still remember seeing it racing in btcc in the 90's, in a televisión program called VERTIGO.
I had a 850 not T5, since them i became a fan of volvo.
I have no words to describe what this video makes me feel.
Regards from Montevideo
Hello Elianne, you're welcome 😉 I also love this car too, it was one of the most beautiful BTCC cars of the 90s and an unforgettable Volvo, both the track and road versions. The engine you have in your vehicle is the right one; it's not the normal GLE but not even the most powerful T5 R, which is now very rare. If you are interested, I have two more videos that I recommend. The same day I filmed this car, as you saw, I put as many cameras as possible. I haven't seen it again since that day and a few years have already passed. So I decided to upload a video that contains only the OnBoard experience, I know it's a video-only for fanatics, but maybe you like it: czcams.com/video/WmFyrwr66vo/video.html
This instead is an old video of mine from 2013, the first time I filmed this car, on the Mugello circuit. The quality is not the best, but at that time, I still had a lot to learn about how to make videos. But I want to show you; you might like it: czcams.com/video/clRsCLFYwYE/video.html

Can't believe this car only weighed 974 kilos! They are about 1450 kilos in road trim so TWR lost nearly half a ton in weight reduction! 😳
History teaches that when the TWR wizards get to work, they always make great race cars, and Volvo did well to rely on them 👍
I had no idea the engine was placed so far back. Seems logical if you think about it, weight distribution wise. Interesting to see nonetheless!
Exactly, bring as many masses as possible towards the centre of the car.
The driveshafts actually pass infront of the block alittle higher than the crank center line, the engine is mounted that low down
No, Rickard Rydell won the BTCC in an S40 in 1998. Volvo stopped racing the 850, after the 1996 season.
The 850 did race in the BTCC in 1994, 95 and 96. The S40 was raced in 1997, 98 and 99 in the BTCC.
Same engine though
It sounds just as i remember from my childhood at knockhill. I wish all the cars from back in the day were still racing . I have a signed poster of the volvo s40 when Rickard Rydell and Kelvin Burt drove for them. My poster is signed by Kelvin Burt.

Love the sound of touring cars of that era. The turbine smoothness of 5he Volvo the scream of an M3 and then there was the Laguna with its Sodemo modified Renault 16v. WOW. All put through relatively narrow tyres - by today’s standards. These cars were the best an£ nothing since - or - now comes anywhere now - don’t get me started on EV’s and Hybrids - the future my ass!
This was the golden era of supertourism, which I followed with great interest and now with great regret. The current TCRs don't have the same charm at all. All the most main manufacturers participated. I'm thinking of the cars: Alfa Romeo 155, Audi A4, BMW 3 series, Opel Vectra, Peugeot 406, Renault Laguna, Volvo 850/S40, Honda Accord, Nissan Primera... it was indeed a magnificent championship with strong drivers 👍
This makes me realize that we don't have any high revving NA inline five in a road car. All of the "famous" five cylinder engines are turbocharged, and they are lovely in its own way, but a +8k rpm inline five would've been awesome...

@@nazzgull2822 'What you say is true, and I am happy that you like my videos 👍 But personally, it's all very sad. Twenty-five years ago, each car had a distinct character; they were different from each other. When I was a boy, when I went to school, I could see the Volvo 850, the Audi A4, the Vectra, the Accords that ran on the street and the weekend on TV I watched the races of all these sedans that challenged each other. It was great because everyday cars, the cars of a family man, I saw them on the track on Sunday (ok, just the bodywork, because we know that the BTCC / WTCC are real racing cars). But for me it was enough, it was beautiful, there was a fan base between one brand and another. Today this is no longer even thinkable. Imagine if we were to see wacky races between cars on stilts or practically the same, perhaps with the same engine (I imagine the Audi-VW-seat mini SUV for example, all with the same engine, the same gearbox, the same suspension ... well, what a sadness. I'm happy to have raised my youth in the 80s-90s and early 2000s. The new generations don't know what they are missing. Furthermore, I suspect that the interests of this racing world are null. Young guys know everything about the last useless smartphones, and they probably don't even know how to drive or have a license and are satisfied with a little VW Up for their travels.

TIM turbos sound just as amazing in their own way, much deeper and rumblier specially love the idle of a volvo turbo 5, this is another kinda amazing, very agressive loud insane sound, tho the s1 quattro, but the n/a 5 cylinders are overlooked because of their very average and boring power, but they literally sound like fucking r8s
Uff💞
5 cylinder howl is where it's at.
You can keep your v12's thanks.
Imagine This Volvo 850 BTCC With The Days Of Thunder Paint Schemes On This Car. How Awesome Would That Be 😀🙂?
I don't know, I have always seen Volvo in its colours, I don't know if yellow and green can look good on the 850 BTCC. It would take someone with a PC capable of virtually pasting that livery to understand the final result 😉
Alright then i respect your opinion but in my opinion the volvo 850 estate btcc would look dope with the days of thunder paint schemes in my opinion 🙂
Helene fischer konatbass jazz❤ liebe ich ich
I have build an estate version to do Rallycross with. :-)
Damn, really? 😱
Eh, sarebbe bellissmo e mi farebbe tanto piacere rivederla in azione, chissà, speriamo 😉👍
The Jack grande, bella storia e bei ricordi. gran macchina il volvone 850 👍
ANYTHING WITH TOM WALKINGSHAW RACING GOODIES IN IT IS BOUND TO BE A WINNER
unless it's F1.
please do this with a Mondeo too :)
I'd gladly do a video like that at Mondeo, too, but I don't know anyone who has that BTCC car. If any owner is reading us, please, contact me 😉
850 estate of Jan Lammers must be also arround.
