  • Those who love Porsches are often the loudest of critics. Those who love air-cooled 911s have been known to, on occasion, not hold back on the Type 964 911. In this episode of Sports & Exotic Car presented by Gullwing Motor Cars, Jethro Bovingdon is calling you out.
Jethro says, “There once was an air-cooled Porsche that nobody loved.” Even if you categorize yourself as a purist, you must admit that the factory “werkes” Type 964 911 RS spawned new ideas and a racing pedigree. For example, the single-marque motorsports series Carrera Cup became the benchmark for those who copied the format. The aerodynamics and all-wheel-drive platform begat the developments of 911s that followed. The Type 964 is also among the most prized 911s as they are the lowest production 911s constructed.
While Jethro would like more of the Type 964s to be “left alone,” a tuner 964 can be without compromise. He drives both - the as-delivered RS in Silver and the dark, uncompromised tuner - in Southern California in this episode of Sports & Exotic Car.

I had a 964 C2, and was surprised to discover that a lot of the RS and Cup parts were still available from Porsche. You can build a pretty sweet RS tribute car with factory parts, mine even had the alloy bonnet.

The 964 deserves to be loved in it's own right. My favourite 911.

Great video. Beautiful cars. I always loved that era, and earlier, versions of the 911. More raw, and pure, than the newer stuff.

Great stuff, Jethro. Drop me a line if anyone needs a suitable UK donor, a 1992 964 C2 manual in Midnight Blue. You can enjoy it as an OEM+ while you wait for your Workshop 5001 build slot!

It wasn't that long ago that you couldn't give away a "mid-year" (74-77) 911 either... I miss those days.

It is greatest Porsche I have the honour of owning and driving. It is visceral driving experience and I would recommend to anyone who really wants to understand the Porsche driving experience. It is simply sublime and I also own a 992 GT3 RS. Nice review Jethro!

I always liked the 964. For me growing up in the 1980s and 1990s it was the first modern 911 and was a better car than the outdated G model. I’d love a nice clean 964.

The problem with backdating is that they ruin a fantastic generation of 911s which should be loved and preserved as it is (the chassis and the Mezger 3.6L of the 964 are absolutely epic). Plus, the bad tuners consider that the 964 generation is not good enough to stay aesthetically untouched, it is very sad because they are really beautiful (the perfect blend between vintage and modernity). The 964 is the last to be 100% hand built. Singer and other idiot tuners destroy them, creating false 60s and 70s 911s for wannabe dumb fake rich enthusiasts. If you love the 964 as it is (you are an authentic petrolhead and a real Porsche lover then, congrats!), there is also a sweet company based in Germany called Manufaktur 964. They preserve them properly and do a perfect job.

AGREE!! 👆 …and if you’re wondering about adding HP. More fun to drive a slow car fast then it is to drive a fast car slow. Cheers 🍻 to all the TRUE Porsche enthusiasts out there!!

They don't ruin anything they enhance they make them better. If they were so great to begin with people with wouldn't want to modify them . This is a pure fantasy video
