    in russia people rarely say family that way, they normally say "semja"

  • @EnoMove
    @EnoMove Před rokem +42

    In Russian there is a word "familia", but it means a "surname". A "family" in Russian will be a "sem'ya" which literally means 7 me. Although earlier everyone used the word "rod" which means "genus". The word familia meant families of commoners. Peasants, townspeople, maybe even slaves. People without some cool pedigree. It's the same with last names. Well, now it's a must. Surnames are even some people of noble birth. Although when describing them, their genus is first called.

  • @marinaogn
    @marinaogn Před 2 lety +525

    In Russia we don't say "family" this way (can be used in books but rarely)
    We use the word СЕМЬЯ (sem'ya).
    Actually, we use this "family" origin in the word ФАМИЛИЯ - "familiya"("surname ").
    It's pretty logic though - families have their surnames so in the past we counted people with the same surname as a part of one big family.

    In general, there are many options in Russian. There is a variant of "familia", but it is outdated, besides, it was used mainly by aristocrats, and now this word means a surname. But the word "semia" is very logical, it means "seven of me", that is, all my relatives with my blood in them. The word "semeistvo" is just one of the varieties of the word "semia". There is also the word "dinastyia" (dynasty), but it is a word with a much broader meaning. And in Ukrainian, the family will be "rodyina" (I don't know how to transcribe it like that) - from the word "ridnyi" - "rodnoi" (native).
