    Hi, it's been a year since The Super Mario Bros. Movie released and we wanted to take a look back to see if we still love this movie a year later. At the time, we were really swept away by all of the fanfare around the movie and had an amazing time attending the movie premiere. Did this give us rose-colored glasses or is this movie still actually good? Let us know how you feel about the Mario Movie in the comments! Thanks for watching and we'll see you later.

    I wish they'd dropped the licensed songs, used the already-made original score. Would've bumped it up considerably for me. An imperfect movie, but a good base for a film franchise. Just try a little harder next time with the story and character development (not looking for Oscar material here, just a coherent narrative that goes deeper than shallow nostalgic veneer)

    The biggest sin this movie commits is glossing over the actual adventure with a short montage to fit in more Illumination movie moments. Its fun because of all of the references but ultimately i dont even think its a very good Mario movie (let alone a good movie)

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie itself, is so much fun, but the way we got to experience it…at the premiere, enjoying the after party, etc., truly added to the experience.
    It holds up. I love it!

    It is understood that Mario doesn't have much plot... because it's a game first and foremost. But... in a medium like Movies... people need something to cling onto that is not just easter eggs and establishing a baseline going forward. It may have been ok for the first movie but for the sequel they need more than just showcasing different worlds from the games... they need to keep interest up or else it won't perform as well as the first movie even half as much.

    Already seen the Mario Movie four times (twice last year when it came out and twice within the last week). With nostalgia and rating the movie overall along with the storyline, references, and other factors, I would say the ceiling is an 8/10 and the floor would be a 6/10. It's good, not great. There were lots of memories we had with the references from the movie, there were too many for only a 92 minute movie and there wasn't much story besides saving Luigi and defeating Bowser. Overall, I can pretend the Live Action Super Mario Bros Movie didn't exist back then due to how horrible it was. Can't believe it's been over a year already. Not much has changed for my feedback on the movie. Love the input Kit and Krysta from now and a year ago.

    My thoughts on the Mario movie now are pretty much the same they were a year ago:
    As a Mario fan it's at least a 9. Absolute joy watching and one of my favorite movie going experiences in years. I do wish they'd ditched most of the 80s music (Beastie Boys can stay but the rest can go) for the original soundtrack, but otherwise I have no serious critiques. I didn't know it was on Netflix now so I'm probably going to watch it again this weekend.
    For the non-Mario/video game fans, and this gets into the critic reviews, I'd say it's around a 7. The art, animation, and music are all stellar, and I feel like these aspects are often weighted lower in movie reviews than they should be. I think the acting ranged from great on down to perfectly fine. I had some reservations about the cast like most people and I think in the final cut no one did a bad job. If anyone was being held back I'd say the material they were given would be the reason. That gets into the writing which I think is where most of the critiques come from, and I think that's fair. I think the writing is perfectly fine for what is, it's just not in the same league as your average Studio Ghibli or Pixar movie or the very best of Disney, but it's entertaining for what it is.

    If anything I like it more now than I did the very first time I watched it. Back then, I was expecting the movie to be funnier than it was and I felt like the second act dragged quite a bit, with Bowser and Luigi both not doing anything until the third act. The lack of jokes no longer bothers me--I think it's an expectation that I had due to the cast, but now that I know what tone the movie is going for, I can fully enjoy that--and the part of the second act that drags is actually pretty brief. There's a 10-min stretch before they get to the Kong kingdom that IMO should have been rewritten to add an additional exciting set piece for Luigi and Bowser, but I love everything else about the film and I'm still impressed by how good the movie looks and sounds and how right they got the adaptation. All the changes that they made still feel true to the spirit of the characters, which is very uncommon for film adaptations of source material that's tricky to adapt.

    I saw this with my son, who liked it quite a bit and so I have seen it many times since. I enjoyed it the first time, but since then I find it quite generic in all but visual style (which is just taken from the games). Theres just very few laugh out loud moments for me. You say a story isn’t important for a Mario movie, but the structure of the film focuses so much on the narrative - it is such a generic one that it’s not very rewarding on rewatch. It could have focused more on comedy, character, action etc and been more interesting for it. Even just the one image from the production of the sequel of Mario and Luigi together off on an adventure gives me more hope that they can shift to character based humour.

    Honestly, I was one of the few Worried fans, not much for the voice actors per say knowing they took their time on training right for the roles they were given especially for jack blacks portion. As not much of a fan of most illumination movies besides a few of their outside projects from minions. I was mostly worried they were gonna throw some unnessacary easter eggs about minions which i am tired of seeing everywhere i must admit. But the voice actors highly surprised me a ton especially chris being Mario. I thought he did a phonaminal job with it treating his role with respect to us Nintendo fans. It's one of my most fave recent animated movies. I also give a solid 9.5/10.

  • @Mithos05
    @Mithos05 Před měsícem

    I know Kit will probably want to disown me for this, but I actually don't think the SMB movie is as amazing as people say. Don't get me wrong, it's visually gorgeous, the characters are beautifully represented and there are a ton of great easter eggs for us older fans. But in the end the film is a bit of a mishmash of lore thrown into a film just for fanservice and the actual narrative is super shallow and forgettable.
    I've gone back and watched Sonic 1 and 2 a lot of times. I've seen Detective Pikachu more times than I'm willing to admit. But I never saw SMB again after theaters. I thought it was OK and understand why people were happy with it (especially after the disastrous previous film), but there's nothing there that makes me want to see it again.
    I do want to be clear that I'm super happy you guys love it. A lot of love and care went into the film.
    My little nephew has seen it a million times though, always wants to play Mario Kart with me and I've bought him most of the movie merch, so I'd say my opinion aside, sounds like it did exactly what it needed to do. 👍🏾

    Am i the only one who didn't like the movie? No, I'm not being a contrarian for the sake of it. I just like story, plot, themes, and metaphor in movies. This one had none. Before anyone says "It's a kids movie" plenty of children's movies, books, and tv shows have all of those things I just mentioned. Looked great, but not in an entertaining way. I'd give it a 5.5 out of 10.

    • @TimBartja
      @TimBartja Před měsícem

      I get your perspective on film for sure, but if we're being true to Mario, would heavy themes and metaphore come across as genuine to the series? I mean, yeah, you get some moments in Paper Mario, but that's not exactly 'core' Mario, which is what they would want to project in this movie.
      The way I see it - and as K&K touch on - it's like they wanted the movie to watch as the games play: not trying to be anything more than wonder, joy, and fun. While that target may not be your cup of tea (which is totally fine), I think it's still fair to say they accomplished what they probably set out to do.

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It's a special piece of media.
    After watching it in theaters, I have since proclaimed it as my favorite movie. The result we got was absolutely brilliant!
    You guys mentioned naysayers. I agree with Krysta in that there hasn't been a whole ton of actual _haters_ for the Mario movie outside of the occasional contrarians. However, I have noticed that people say the movie moved too fast with pacing. Personally, I hope for the sequel to slow down a bit and let characters have moments of growth.
    Many like to paint Illumination in an infamous light with their humor; the Mario movie _could_ have been riddled with fart jokes. Likewise, the writers are in charge of Teen Titans Go!, a rather unpopular show with folks online. I actually like TTG, but I digress.
    The Super Mario Bros. Movie probably isn't for everyone on the planet, but it's likely to stay my favorite movie for a long, long time. Even after watching it 12 times, it's magical.

      @@ethangardner8202 Pirates of the Caribbean was based on a theme park ride, yet they managed to make an epic story with interesting characters out of it. They could have done the same for Mario. Instead, they made a pretty but very by-the-numbers spectacle.

    oh man, I'm sorry, but you guys are crazy! the movie is super generic. I like the references, I like that it IS successful, because it seems to signify Nintendo isn't afraid of being adventurous now that they can fall back on standard Mario. but the licensed songs are horrible, the character "arcs" are bland, the Kong subplots are unnecessary (wtf is with the Mario/DK daddy issues), and....what is up with the DOG?! somehow they made that scene drag in a 90 minute movie. and it's not like Mario learned a lesson about....defeating evil dogs? weird.

  • @KingSigy
    @KingSigy Před měsícem +1

    For me, it was the "backlash" online against critics that kind of soured the movie. People really need to understand how criticism works and that a weighted average doesn't mean something is deemed "bad." I thought the Mario movie was okay: way too safe and with some typical Hollywood flourishes that diminished certain moments (damn you, licensed songs!). Otherwise, it was a good enough jumping-off point for a franchise. It's a kids film and considering that I'm 35, it just doesn't hit the same for me, which is perfectly fine.

  • @MellowFelloh
    @MellowFelloh Před měsícem +2

    Big respect to whoever loves/likes it. But i just couldnt get into it. Most of the characters are bland and theres a lack of character development. The story almost doesnt exist and the soundtrack is very generic. The soundtrack being even worse because they did originally make music for the movie but took it out for whatever reason last minute.
    "Mario doesnt need a story" is a poor argument because when you cross the line into movies, you need a story now lol Recent animated movies like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was incredible in its characters, cinematography, story, animation, etc. Its very much doable. I need more than just "Member berries." All in all id probably give it a 5-6 (Average to Above Average rating)

    Kit and Krysta, I know this is long, but PLEASE READ THIS! There's a bottom line down below if you want to just read that. I absolutely LOVE the Super Mario Bros. movie! 😃 Miyamoto and Chris did an AWESOME job! I want to say something. I don't know what you think about the afterlife, but I know that if we die in our sins, if we've lied, stolen, used God's name as a swear word, (eg. OMG), looked at someone with lust, we're going to go to hell. That breaks my heart, I don't want you to go to hell! God is paying us in death for our sins. He's giving us the death sentence! But there IS a way to find everlasting life! Please listen! The 10 commandments are called the moral law. You and I broke the law. Jesus paid the fine! THAT'S what happened on that cross! If you're in court and you have speeding fines, a judge will legally let you go if someone paid your fine. God can legally take the death sentence off you because of what Jesus did on the cross! All you have to do to find everlasting life is repent of your sins, turn away from them, and say, "God, I am sorry for my sins!" And trust and put your faith in Jesus! Don't trust your goodness to save you, God PROMISES, and he CANNOT lie, He'll forgive you in an INSTANT and grant you everlasting life as a free gift!
    Bottom line: Repent of your sins, and TRUST and put your FAITH in Jesus! 😁
    If you have any questions, PLEASE let me know, and I will answer them! I HAVE rewatched the Mario Movie on a plane! 😃
