Gabe Newell is such a genius that he managed to take the Gym "unused gym memberships outnumber used memberships" business model and applied it to video games.
is all about perspective... i see my steam account as an "entertainment retirement account", when the day comes... i will have a 401k and a Steam catalog of games to keep me busy
@@shiznoSC2 my eyes and reflexes are checking out WAY before retirement.
@@Chris6741 also backpain
That's if arthritis doesn't hit you.
I thought the same thing too, but now that I have a travel trailer and a boat, I'll be hitting the road when I retire.
Games are getting worse because of all the live service stuff, so at some point there won't be much games to buy.
My unplayed games are from giant bundles, I have no idea how that could be properly tracked based on Steam stats.
Great video, Lon! I've switched over to buying games on GOG rather than Steam, though I still buy steam games now and then as the GOG store doesn't always have what I am looking for. Unfortunately its rare for a PC game to get a physical release, otherwise I would quit buying digital altogether.
It's interesting. Older I get, more I buy from GOG and mostly older titles. There's also fact that GOG has quite a lot of drm free stuff and I want to support that idea too.
So true. And, I have tons of unplayed games. Yet, I sometimes buy things on sale to collect them, especially at a low price, or if I think I might play them later on.
I do the same. I collect a huge amount of good games, and hope i can play at least half of them next 10 years.
Great idea on the unplayed list! I've been doing it manually through a "play next" list, but your idea sounds more efficient
I have less than 100 Steam games and only played about 1/3 of the library. I'm more conscious on buying additional games since I don't play a lot of new games nowadays anymore on top of playing retro games. If I'm in the mood to play video games, I usually play my favourite games before trying anything new.
Quite similar thing. These days I'm really curious about titles, but luckily I've gotten better at reasoning myself that "Hey, you already have like bare minimum +30 titles you've never tried and still you play stuff like OG X-Com, Doom, etc. virtually every year for that time you could play these other titles". Unfortunately I still tend to get few titles every year from these sales. I also have Gamepass and tbh I love it. But it's quite expensive and I've been thinking that I seriously should cancel it as I could buy those few newer titles for even full price. But the appeal of it's cloud gaming feature just makes it so fast to try title X and few times I've struck gold in titles I absolutely would've never tried. Would be different if I were young and had that time kids have.
I have never had a good gaming computer so most of my games are cheap and cheerful, about £5 and I only have about 50 or 60.
The most expensive is Civ VI with all the DLCs and I waited for it to hit a low price before buying.
The way I look at it is that the really good games 'subsidise' the bad ones.
There is some value I suppose in having a library of stuff you haven't tried yet, part of the joy of streaming was just having a lot of options. But a lot of it is probably FOMO and getting sucked into deals on stuff you might never have time to play.
But it is kind of tragic that there's no real legal definition of digital ownership. The fact it always companies are getting away with calling these purchases, and using the term buy instead of long-term rental or something, seems to violate at least the spirit of existing laws. Is it false advertising to say I'm buying something when you can take it away from me or change it remove my account at any time
GOG has quite a lot of DRM free stuff and you can download offline installers for virtually all content. That's why I prefer it more these days than Steam
With your list of unplayed games, I'd probably start with Jedi Fallen Order. That one was pretty fun.
I have been playing Steam games since 2003 and have about 275 or so games in my Steam account and I have played them all. I never buy full price games at launch, only (older) AAA games or indie games on sale. A lot of them were even under $5,- or in a (humble) bundle.
Can't resist those sales
I buy games on sale that I know I'll never play because I like seeing them in my collection and I can't pass up a bargain.
Yep, It gets pretty hard to pass up sales when you see some AAA games that are under $10 or even $5 sometimes.
I'll probably never play them but they are too good to not get and at least have them there.
Bought and currently playing resident evil 7 on my phone😎 Can't wait to play village next
I have around 3100 games on Steam. Over 2000 of them never started. Among them a lot of top titles
Also have around 2000 games combined on Prime, Epic, GOG, EA And UBI.
I can totally relate to this video. Many unplayed Steam games, that I'll probably never play.
And Lon, speaking of games that you buy but don't really own, have you considered GOG? They also have discounts right now, and several of the games of my Steam wishlist are also on there more or less for the same price. Now I'm hesitant where to buy them.
The thing is, we weren't conned into buying all these games we don't play. We WANTED to do it. Gabe's charisma trumps common sense 😂
I have a number of games that require a 2nd log in to play and the company refuses to help me getting into older games I no longer have the SN for despite Steam being able to verify I'm the "owner". I refuse to buy games from that company any longer because of this policy and feel once you buy through Steam that should be it especially since Steam doesn't notify you of this added requirement. I'm also disappointed with the number of Steam games listed as "coming soon" and have been that way, in some cases, for several years. Steam has become a lot less user friendly over the years .....
I can't get the pile of shame to work for me. I make my games publicly viewable, including playtime, and it isn't showing up.
Sales on these store fronts is really clever move tbh. Let's be real that business owners for 100% certainty know this thing, but they've calculated that still my doing deep sales they can still make money out of the titles. Just yesterday I bought was it signal that was in really deep sale. For sure I would've never bought it else. But really good price and looked fairly interesting so I got it. Only rare thing was that I actually installed it right after buying. Usually they stay in library for years for that "some day I should try that" feeling 😂
This is a "problem" on many platforms whether it be Xbox, Switch, Playstation etc. I think because the value of games is so low that there is value in simply owning rather than consuming. I think this is part of the business model now, there will be analytics provided to publishers to "monetise" the "never play" market.
Yes, physical games are definitely a way to go but I totally understand the appeal of digital games. They are so much cheaper and so accessible
Yeah. I have quite a lot of titles I haven't played in GOG and Steam. Though there's one thing. I've bought few titles in hope that original devs could get even little compensation, cause there's some I enjoyed as kid, but you know decades ago "aarh, let's sail those murky seas again" 😏
People like adding games they want to their collection..they may not play it today and maybe not tomorrow but they will play them when they get a chance and when they choose.. but a sale is a sale...
Time to go buy mine now. Lol
Also the fact that steam games didn't used to have a minimum cost until around 2018.
You could formerly find garbage games for literally pennies, including ones with steam Trading Cards.
Gobbling up cheap games used to actually net you a small profit. Enough to buy more garbage.
Thanks! Here - go buy yourself a game. :)
Thanks for your support!
Since I am just 1 month into PC gaming.. 7 games so far
Like...I have one game in that status...I will buy 2 soon and will play one of them in August.
I've at least played 5 mins of all the games.. when you first become a PC gamer and a steam sale hits... You're like "why wouldn't I buy witcher 1 and 2 if I'm buying the 3rd. Meanwhile, 1 and 2 are so outdated they're damn near unplayable. You learn after a few sales and you calm down a bit.. but there's at least 10-15 I really haven't played beyond the intro out of 100+ titles.
Guilty as charged, 106 unplayed for me. Lon, I see you've never played Subnautica. I often never complete a game, however, Subnautica is fantastic and I've completed it at least six times. I highly, highly recommend playing it.
Wow six times! I need to check it out - I think I picked it up for its VR mode.
Shoot .. I thought that might just be in Lon's Steam library! 😂 If we're being honest those are MSRP. That only applies to gas stations and Bodegas.
I actually don't think I have a single unplayed game on Steam, but I only have about 100 games on there over the past 13 years. Completed games though? Maybe just a handful.
Over the past several years, Epic Games has been giving away 1 or 2 games per week, many of them very notable titles. Too many games...too little time.
Me too. I've collected tons of freebies that I've never played and probably never will on Epic.
amazon prime gaming gives games too every month
I got over 500 games on Epic and i think it got over 600 games from Prime.
@@Ebolachicken Yeah. Prime gives out more free games monthly than Epic.
Since 2018, i think i have 600 games on Prime.
I tested mine and it says I haven't played any of my games ever. 0 hours.
This estimate is flawed in many ways.
❤❤❤
I have a bunch of unplayed games.
That's because I just received a Beelink SER7 I loaded up yesterday thanks to The Steam Sale.
I am waiting on my Azeron Cyro one handed controller to be delivered. I have 2/10 dexterity in my left hand and 6/10 dexterity in my right hand. Thumb stick and 20-ish keys that can be binded.
I got 12-14 games for $75 so I will be plowing through those for a while.
Most of my unplayed games are from bundles. You get a bundle with 30 games and the one I want to play is more expensive on the store than the entirety of the bundle. It is a great deal but you end up with such a bloated library. I think I am close to 800 and I would say over 75% are unplayed because I never intended to play them to begin with.
Lon how dare you not play Shenmue. You need to rectify that right away! 😂
I prefer it in the original Dreamcast :)
I hear ya but I have to say that PC port is quite well done. It doesn't look much better but it has an actually widescreen mode and it fixes all the slow load times. It really is a great way to experience them again.
That reminded me that I should have trilogy on my stores. I completed the first one few years ago and been planning to play them all through. Started 2, but as many times had problems having time and forgot where I was at.
I’ve got 1000 games and have played about 300. Some have been played once.
Steam is a game? I think you mean Lynx.
I have less than 50 games on steam. I've played all of them.
I have about 60 games that I haven’t played or played no longer than 2 hours 😂😂😂
I am sure there are those like me who have to pirate old games due to being a broke student in the past but decided to buy a legit copy after getting a job and earning enough money as appreciation.
I didn't come to this channel to be judged. 😤
Games bought on special, some played just for a short time and some not played at all, probably around fifty, hey less than ten dollars who cares, I will eventually get around to it and I am a retired gamer and I play mostly every single day, sometimes more sometimes less. Some of the classics are simply better than the new games and so many games, so little time. My likely best game, bought some time ago, still on the too be played list, monster hunter world and then there is the Epic free games, as well as some paid for on special. Even as a retired gamer, so many games, so little time and so much other content, streaming.
Yep I'm guilty, 700+ unplayed Steam games, Even more if you add GOG, Humble Bundle and Epic, If they keep offering free games I keep clicking accept. ;)
When buying games humans conveniently forget most of their time will be ripped away by slavery (we've now branded it as work), I have about 250 Steam games and play less than 3 of them a week, obligations chew down your gaming time by default.
Is sad not to have time for Gaming....
... at least 50... but i only buy cheap games
And we care about because? It doesn’t matter because people sit on games all the time, including me.
Is there a good game out now? Answer No I’m playing Red Dead Redemption for the 100th time.
Well I’ve never spent any money on Steam, so my total is $0. I’d love to build a gaming PC at some point, however.
Digital hoarding is a problem
I have about 4 games purchased last year and haven't even install them.
Why is that such a big deal? But who cares?
zero because I don't buy games ;)
Zero! Steam is trash. GOG is king.
I really don't like AI generated thumbnails. It comes across as lazy.
