Flat Hoof With Wall Separations: How To Help ; Grinder Trim

- Wall separation in the horse's hoof is a common problem. These defects in the wall/white line are caused by opportunistic bacteria/fungus invading the wall/white line and creating spaces which harbor more dead tissue for these micro-organisms to thrive on. With balanced trimming and diligent management, the horse can heal these separations and grow a strong wall/white line connection again.

I really appreciated the over the shoulder shot. It’s nice to see the angle of the grinder and how it changes the foot.
I'm so glad that was helpful! Kimi is a fantastic videographer because she knows exactly what she'd want to see learning about the subject matter. :)
Love the logo!
Thank you! :)
Great video- wonderful videographer/videography and angles to view what you’re doing. Can I ask what kind of grinder you use and typical grit pads? Thanks!
Good vid. I have the same issue w my mini in addition to her hooves being rock hard
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, that was helpful. My gelding often has separation. I will try the Durasole and Artimud after trimming and cleaning.
Glad it was helpful!
You are a great instructor. I would love to see your technique to bring the toe back when overly long. Thanks!
Thank you!
I use Artimud too! Good stuff.
The best!
Good video. What kind of hoof knife are you using? I'd like to get one. Thanks
It's a JH Forge Shorty: jhforge.com/products/shorty-with-pick
very helpful. QUESTION...What kind of grinder do you like use?
So glad this video is helpful! I use a MetaboHPT grinder because it's the smallest and most compact.
@@DaisyHavenFarm thank you! which volt and blade size? I see a 18v 4 1/2 inch size. Is that the one? Also looking for info on balancing tips. We have a narrow based Arab mare that wears unevenly due to weaving. Her natural conformation is straight but get toed out in between trimmings.
This was great to watch. Do you recommend shoes to protect the separations?
It's definitely helpful to provide a barrier to keep the separations clean until they can grow out. Whether that's a shoe or packing the separations with artimud etc.
It’s hard tell from the video but wasn’t there bar material overlaid on the lateral side? Love your videos!
I’m curious about the hairline, as it’s commonly described as an indicator of proximal/distal distortion?
Now is there a video of toe cracks and how to keep them under control without shoes??
Please tell me where to get artimud my horse has wall separation
Where are you located? You can order Artimud online, from EDSS: shopedss.com/artimud-antibacterial-horse-hoof-putty-300g/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_-GxBhC1ARIsADGgDjsM2s2CYVxKqL-nLmYJzwKU-gFah9wUOBFYtnrnz1kLwW2NXpxcpx4aAq4XEALw_wcB
What brand of hoof knife do you use?
My knife is a JH Forge Shorty:

Those 2 separations are roughly diagonally opposed; is this significant i.e., related to break over?? Thanks!
I think the location of the separations here is more about how the foot is loaded. The medial quarter is weak because of overloading the inside of the hoof. (offset capsule, rolling medially) and on the lateral because that's the part of her foot that grows the longest and the leverage pulls on the laminae.
@@DaisyHavenFarm Thanks!
@@comesahorseman you’re very welcome!
can i ask why you didn't remove the hard lump in the middle of the back of the frog? i've seen people say it needs to be there (frog stay) and some that say it's dead hard material that gets pushed up and causes discomfort, not allowing the frog to expand properly so should be removed. Just wondering your thoughts on it.
Great question! My goal was to relieve the lump from the ground to prevent pressure and to facilitate access for treatment of the surrounding thrush. I didn't remove it completely because I didn't feel it would help any more than relieving it from being too tall did anyway. I hope that helps!
@@DaisyHavenFarm thank you!
@@DaisyHavenFarm also, do you ever think you would come to BC Canada for a clinic? The barefooters are really growing here finally!

What brand of knife?
What kind of knife is that?
JH Forge Shorty
This is very dangerous and vert stupid with the grinder.leave it to a proper farrier
I trim with a grinder every day, quite safely. It’s not about the tool, it’s about the skills and knowledge of the person using it. Just because it’s not your choice, or the choice of other farriers doesn’t make it bad, or wrong. 🥰
She obviously knows what she doing😊
if she did she would not be using a grinder. If a grinder was a proper safe alternative tool then why do no proffessional Farriers use them!!!!
