  • Hooves grow really fast in the summer time in the United States. Sometimes its hard to keep up with the excess growth. The toe is usually the last part of the hoof a horse will self trim on their own. It usually requires a hoof care provider/farrier to remove the excess growth.
In this video I'm trimming one of my personal horses who grows really fast this time of year. This is only 5 1/2 weeks of growth 😵‍💫. I usually take a rasp to my horses hooves every two to three weeks to try and keep them from growing this much hoof wall. But I was out of town for a week and them had to play catch up trimming client horses. So my poor personal horses went a little long!
An 8 week trim cycle is generally too long for a barefoot or shod horse. The 6-8 week cycle was created for horses who are in nail on steel shoes. If you shoe them more frequently then that the increased number of nail holes can damage the hoof wall and the horse is more likely to throw a shoe mid cycle. If we were trimming only for the well being of the horses hoof we would usually trim more frequently. At 3-4 weeks into the cycle we are chasing pathologies and unable to correct them.

I adore this content! Thank you for sharing with us - I am a novice barefoot trimmer and watch you all the time.
I’m constantly changing the balance and then have to take more off to rebalance it. Always learning!

Thanks Kristin, really awesome video. Super informative commentary. What do you think of heel slippering that Daisy does?

I was wondering if you have ever thought of putting that hoof paint stuff on after trimming?

Thank you for watching and for your comment! The horses natural layer of periople protects their hoof wall. So if I don’t dress the hoof wall I don’t add anything to the outer wall that could interfere with the horses natural protection.

I like how you try to teach your audience about hoof care. But.... Rule of thumb is the size of limb he can beat his wife with. This is true. So, 'a good rule to follow'is a better alternative. Men say rule of thumb because the wife isn't allow to hit a man.
